Surprisingly Strong Short Course

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

What to Expect - This park style course is set in a beautiful and well maintained park just on the outskirts of downtown Owensboro. This HB Clark design course boasts 27 holes but I will only really be focusing on the original 18 as the added on 9 seem like alternates added by the local club. Great for beginners (if the either skip the water holes or just alternate tees) all the way up to intermediate players. Lightly Hilly (really only two hills on the entire course that are used very well), water (creeks and ponds) come into play on at least a third of the course, and lightly wooded.

Design - Yellow Creek uses a mostly open design with a few distinct obstacles and a strategically placed basket to create it's challenge. For instance Hole #1 is straight and open but a large creek looms to just to the right of the basket and every shot filters that direction. Hole #2 is also straight but the basket is tucked just barely into the woods on a sharp uphill slope. Hole #3 shoots you out and down a wooded tunnel and then doglegs hard left. Holes #14-#18 all have baskets perched on or near the lake bank. This course forgoes big distance requirements and focuses more on control and touch. Very much a short course where every hole can be birdied.

Tees/Signage/Baskets - Tees are very long and quite narrow compared to most of HB's other designs. Still in good shape even as the course approaches being 25 years old. Course map kiosk and tee signs are good but not great. They do provide all relevant information but are showing signs of age. Practice basket location (it had been stolen when I last played but I'm pretty sure the local club was able to replace it). Baskets have been updated since the first time I played it as well to Prodigy cross chain design.

Amenities - Multiple shelter houses and modern bathrooms, ample parking, course is separate from playing fields and avoids issues with everything except pavilion renters and fishermen. Course is extremely well maintained. Mowed every time I have visited, multiple benches, tables, and trash cans throughout the course.

Signatures - Holes #2, #3, #4, #10 and #18 could all easily be considered for the signature hole of the course depending on who you ask. Some people will hate them though, just as much as others love them. My personal vote goes to Hole #10 as it just edges out Hole #18 (as 18 has too many negatives against it as I will describe below). Hole #10 is a tight straight downhill low ceiling short gap shot that turns abruptly to the right where you find a basket just mere feet from the steep bank of a creek. The hole might play 100-125 feet due to the extremely downhill nature and the groundplay you get. Extremely touchy shot, a suicidal ace run, and a perfect synopsis hole that encompasses and summarizes the entire course.

Extras Worth Mentioning - The course really only has two hills, three if you count the downslope from the parking lot area. The elevation is used to perfection. Not a hilly course by any means, and very cart friendly. The course ends up being much more aesthetically pleasing than you would first imagine when getting out of your car. There is not a lot of underbrush, but they have left just enough to mildly punish bad shots.

Cons:

Lost Discs - There is a huge lost disc potential on Holes #1 and #10 and Holes #14-#18 as the creek and pond are waiting usually just a few feet from the basket locations. The sides of the bank on the creek are steep and slick and it's hard to retrieve discs from them. The pond is a protected habitat and you are not allowed to enter it to go get your disc (there is a local who is allowed to rake the lake, so make sure you have your contact info on your discs and he'll get them back to you).

Flood Plain - Course sits in a flood plain bowl between multiple creeks with the pond area actually being one of the highest points on the course. Holes 1-4 and 10-13 hole water after heavy rain and the creeks can overflow their banks. Can be very wet and soggy even days after a good rain.

Hole #18 - While being beautiful and honestly not that long of a water carry (probably 250-275 feet), it is a forced water carry. With only lake to the right and the parking lot to the left, you are forced to go over. Shorter arms may need to skip this hole entirely. Within 30 feet of the basket is a well utilized picnic area and a shelter house which both can be in play off the tee. Add to it this spot is a favorite among fishermen and it can get pretty crowded around the 18th green.

RHBH Bias - This course is very RHBH dominant with mostly open hyzers or right to left turning fairways being the desired route (outside of Hole #10)

Annoyances - Mosquitoes are an issue due to the flood plain, poison ivy is pretty prevalent in the rough areas, and the park has a tendency to be VERY busy with families and fishermen making it difficult to throw.

Hole #9 - Hole #9 isn't as bad as hole #18 but it is a "get me back to the parking lot" wide open short hole with not much character (a let down from the other 8 holes on the front 9) It brings the parking lot and vehicles into play and isn't memorable at all.

The additional 9 - Holes 19-27 are passable and not close to being as good as the original 18. They are mostly wide open, but much longer holes that play around a few open fields without much character or visual charm to set them apart from one another. Several of the tee signs for these holes are missing and the distances can be hard to gauge. Not bad holes, just nothing to get super excited about.

Other Thoughts:

Yellow Creek is a splendid course that has stood the test of time. It is definitely on the low end of skill required to perform well at, but is extremely solid for a short park style course. It would definitely score higher on my list if the park wasn't so busy and the basket locations weren't in spots where lost discs occur frequently or you are forced to wait for people to move to play. Nothing extremely brilliant about the course to push it higher on my rating scale, but it does what it intends to do extremely well. Probably the best course in the Owensboro area and a must play if you are traveling through.

fun and challenging 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Hole one, easy downhill no problem-------well there is that deep creek right behind the pin..
Two looks open, hmm nope it's in the woods and up a steep hill thats lets the disc have room to roll back down.
Three should be easy. Hey where is the pin? Down the hill and left?
And so goes this wonderful little course here in northern Ky. Each and every hole has a different look and a set of challenges.
It's easy to score well here provided you stay out of the rough. It is REALLY ROUGH.
The holes over the pond are tough but fair for players who can throw 250.
Nice mowed fairways and benches/tables and trashcans at key places around the course. People are very friendly and will help you out on where to go next. Finding the next hole wasn't hard but there were some places where one might get lost.
Love the extra long teepads.
Five Guys Burgers is a few minutes away as are many great restuarants.
Ducks and Geese and beautiful scenery abound in this neat park.
All in all just a great place for a great game.

Cons:

Poisin Ivy was all over the place and some of the roughs could be cleaned up a bit.
Hole 9 was kinda out of place and didn't impress me as being ":Neat". Just a plain short hole whose only purpose was to get you back to hole 1 and 10.
The people around the pond were in the way and they had small kids fishing and playing. They were nice enough to watch out but someone could get hurt. Hole 18 needs a drop zone for us throwers who can't make the 250 feet in any wind condition.

Other Thoughts:

Just a good 3 par course with some elevation and challenging wooded holes.
I think this is one of H B's better short courses. I will be back.

Excellent duece or die course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Original course lies in the back of a multi-use park partially along the Yellow Creek and up and down some large slopes. The course is partially wooded with rather large lines to get to the basket. A variety of lengths keep it from getting repetitive. Nice stone benches and large tee pads accompany each hole on the original 18. Nice use of the elevation in the park with some holes up, others down, some across grade and others flat. A lot of baskets are strategically placed for a do-or-die putting situation if your drive isn't right near the basket. The last five holes really make you concentrate otherwise your disc will probably get going in the water.

Cons:

As mentioned by others, the course can become flooded after heavy storms and numbers 1, 2, 10, 11, 12, and 13 can become unplayable. The extra nine (holes A-I), which start on the other side of the road after number 8 don't add much to the character of the rest of the course. All have long narrow tee pads that don't allow for any sideways movement on them. They feel like they should be on a different course.

Other Thoughts:

Course can be very busy on nice days and after school is let out. I don't see this as a Con but kind of as a Pro meaning that this is a good course for all skill levels and gets used a lot. Only other real suggestion/comment I have is that maybe there should be a couple of brooms out near numbers 14-18 so you don't have to drive while going through goose crap on the tee pads.

The 'Boro pleases 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice and challenging course in a very busy park that itemizes the land given to almost its' maximum potential. Front nine has nice elevation uses, and one hole in particular stands out to me, but I can't remember the exact number. You throw at the bottom of a basin straight up a hill with concrete stairs and the basket is right up the top of that crazy steep hill. Some ace runs available. Back nine plays off into a basin, then comes back around to the lake and has some nice lake shots, concluding with the monster #18 that involves chucking it across the entire pond.

Cons:

A little too busy at times. Especially watch for people around the lake holes, as some love to fish and eat around them. Hole #18 may scare off novices, and I too have lost one of my discs to the drink there. Some of the back nine can get very water logged after a recent rain as it sits in a very low-lying area. On Hole #11 make sure you are throwing the disc towards the right as the basket is tucked into the outline of the woods there. Don't throw straight at the basket down a bit straight ahead as that is #13's basket. Can be tricky for those who have never played.

Other Thoughts:

Good course and worth the drive if you have time to stop by. Will challenge just about everyone.

27 Great Holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

27 Holes, and with the temp nine they had for the tournament it was great two rounds and never the same hole. The course used great elevation changes and the trees as well to build shots. The tee pads were plenty long enough for a run-up. Great use of water which can scare people out of Ace Runs on some of the shorter holes. The new baskets were great.

Cons:

I believe the parks department removed a lot of trees on the back of the original 9 which is a shame, it made a lot of shots open and very easy from what I understand. some of the tee-pads were very very narrow. On a hole or two the route you had to take to get to the basket was literally right over the head of the people teeing off on the next hole.

Other Thoughts:

Overall it was a well designed and maintained course. There was a lot of thought put into how to use what they had. lots of solid elevation changes. If you are nearby this is a course to stop by and throw a round of 27 at.

Always Fun! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 13, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Here is a fun to play, beginner friendly course set in a very nice park, with good tees, signs & baskets as well as stone blocks for benches. Mostly open with predominantly straight and hyzer shots, mild elevations, some trees/light woods and a few challenging pin placements add variety. Five holes around the pond, and perhaps two placements near the creek (#1, #10), provide good mental challenges; #18 being particularly exciting, every time.
The pondside shelters, facilities, nearby playground / mini water park and other activities, make this course not only family friendly but tournament friendly as well. Superbly maintained, the locals and Parks Dept. are clearly great advocates of the sport.

Cons:

Not a lot can be considered a detriment.
While the addition of nine holes was good they strike me as contrived, offering little more challenge than distance and mild accuracy, over wide open gentle hills back and forth across a treeline / ditch. The layout works best if played 1-8, then holes A-I, and finally 9-18.
They recently removed what few unsightly trees added difficulty to holes 12 & 13!

Other Thoughts:

I've been playing this course for ten years and always have fun, what with so plentiful birdie ops. This is a great course on which to develop and refine the fundamentals of the game.
It's also the course on which I scored my only ace (#9) as well as hit chains and basket twice in a round ...
Fun!

Pros:

This course is well mainted with alot of friendly players. Nice concrete pads and tee signs on all 27 holes. This course provides a different shot on every hole. Holes 14-18 are located around a nice lake. Nice layout where the front 9 and back nine end up back at the parking lot. And you don't have to do alot of walking in between the holes.

Cons:

Sometimes they have cross country meets and other events at this park that does cause some confusion during a round.

Other Thoughts:

This is a course that is great for beginners (except hole 18). I've seen some of the local guys shoot like 12 under.

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 2, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Disc Golf Course at Yellow Creek Park in Owensboro offers a nice 18-hole layout that is well maintained and a lot of fun to play. There is a new nine that has been installed at Yellow Creek making for 27 total baskets. I only played the original layout of the first 18, so my review will not cover the new holes.

The original 18-hole layout is comprised of two 9-hole loops, each returning to the parking area. Yellow Creek uses Chainstar baskets that are in good shape. There are nice, level concrete pads and accurate tee signs on each of the holes. The course flows well and is very easy to navigate. The fairways are well defined, and there are no crossing fairways on the course. The only potential interference issue that I noticed was No12 & No13. These holes parallel each other in opposite directions, so if there are others playing, keep this in mind.

From the appearance of the course, it seems as though it is kept up very well. There were trash receptacles and benches scatter throughout the course. The benches were carved out of large rocks, a nice, unique feature of the course.

Although the course is designed over a relatively small piece of land, the designer does a great job of utilizing the moderate elevation changes to provide a variety of uphill, downhill, and side hill shots. As the name indicates, there is a creek that runs along several of the holes throughout the course. Baskets and fairways are strategically located near the creek where possible to offer an increased challenge. An errant shot near the creek could cost you a disc, and a stroke. Holes 14-18 were built around a small lake that offers a great visual appeal. Hole No18 offers a shot directly over the lake of around 230ft or so. Not much room for bail-out on this hole except for long. The basket sits on somewhat of a peninsula, so anything short, right, or left will most like be swallowed by the lake.

Yellow Creek is not a long course, with the longest hole on the original 18 layout being just under 350ft, but there is a nice variety of distances and shot types required. There were no real tight, technical holes on the course, but almost every hole had some type of obstacle to clear, whether throwing around the creek or lake, or a basket guarded by a group of large, mature trees.

Cons:

No real cons to speak of at Yellow Creek. The course is a little on the short side, but given the amount of space here, the land was utilized as well as it could be. There was quite a bit of duck droppings around the lake, not terrible, but if it is anything like my local course, probably really bad in the fall. You may watch when picking up your discs or carry bags.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, a nice course with great visual appeal. Definitely a par54 course, more experience players will most like shoot some low scores here, but the course should offer an adequate challenge for the average player. If you are in the Owensboro area, definitely check this one out.

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very well maintained course with a good flow. Every hole makes the best possible use of the land that is available. A wide variety of shots can be used with many holes offering several lines to the basket with and good risk/reward for each choice.

Cons:

The new nine offer the opportunity to throw longer shots but there is little more to it than simply throwing far on some of the holes. The land on that side of the park really doesn't have much to offer.

Other Thoughts:

It's hard to list too short as a con for the original 18 holes when they make such good use of the available land. I've been playing this course for 8+ years and I still have fun every time I go out. Though scores in the low 40's do happen on this course for pro and advanced players on a regular basis there is never a time when they do not enjoy the round!

Variety is the spice of life 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 2, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

No two holes are the same. On one hole you will be throwing down a steep hill towards a river guarded basket, on another you will be throwing a spike hyzer up a steep bluff...really keeps you on your toes! Very nicely laid out course that offers a decent level of challenge while maintaining the fun factor. Every disc golfer should be able to find a hole or two that will stick out in there mind after they play Yellow Creek for the first time. The Final nine holes (19-27) are a nice addition that provide an opportunity too air-it-out a little. If you find yourself in Owensboro, make sure you take time to play this course. It is truly a pleasure to play.

Cons:

Yep, there's lots of duck poop. Creek will devour your discs if water is high. Not the most challenging course for highly skilled players.

Other Thoughts:

I decided to make the 70+ mile drive to play this course at the reccomendation of my brother. It is totally worth the drive on its own merits. I played Panther Creek on the same trip and wish I had just played this course twice. Will definately be back.

Great course and great use of space. Well maintained!! Doesnt offer the distance shots like other courses but will make you play well and hit putts. Hole 4 has a great elevation change, and a bad kick off a tree will have you going from Birdie to Bogey...

Cons:

Yes, the Geese will attack you. Also, I wouldnt recommend walking barefoot around the lake.

27 holes soon, can't beat that, much applause and respect goes out too the local guys down there in Daviess County.
