Packs a Lot in a Little 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Most holes have two tee location or two baskets. Lots of new and ongoing improvements.

Cons:

A bit of fairway crossing amongst 5-8. Map needs to be updated as there are now 16 holes, with a 17th due November 2010, and additional tees/baskets. Watch out for fishermen on #5 and #8.

Other Thoughts:

This course packs a lot in a little amount space, utilizing a bit of open space between small clusters of trees, parts of a thin forest, and a little bit of elevation change near a creek. Other than dead-straight-n-short ace-run #11, each hole will hit you with some trees/forest to get past, and a turn or two to execute at various points of the flightpath.

There is evidence of lots of recent work being done on the course - a long, unmarked, new hole with two concrete tees between 5&6, new holes 13-15, a fairway currently being cleared near them for an additional hole, some new benches, some new baskets, and where there are some areas of dampness, generous amounts of mulch have put down to help alleviate the problem.

Note: There is a steep drop-off to the creek just a few feet behind basket-5. Spotter advised, especially if throwing from the long tee.

Certainly worth a visit if in the area - a variety of (mostly short-n-flat) challenges packed into a small amount fo space.

Good But Not Great 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 13, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very fun course. Who doesn't love throwing a disc off of the top of a hill? You get to do that on the first hole. Very cool.

Excellent layout, given the piece of land that it's on. They squeezed every bit they could out of the real estate.

Some nice variety. There are holes in the open and holes in the woods. Some holes are "grip and rip," while others require a more careful approach.

There is a second course across the street at Kent State Trumbull Campus. It's not a great course, but it's another course.

It's pretty accessible; just off the Route 5 bypass at the Rte 45 exit.

Cons:

Not a full 18 holes. It's good that it isn't though, because they didn't have enough land for 18 holes.

Other Thoughts:

I only get to play this course when I visit my folks who still live in the area. One of my favorite things is an early Saturday morning round and a trip to Mickey's Army Navy afterward. What a cool store! I usually end up at Plaza Donuts on 422 either before or after my round for a cup of coffee and a maple-glazed, creme-filled donut. If it's too late for donuts, I hit the Jib Jab Hot Dog Shoppe near 422 and I-80 in Girard on the way home.
