Oooo, That Smell! (apologies to Skynyrd) 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 New DGA Mach V baskets. They look good, catch well, and have deep trays, which are great. These are numbered with unique plates depicting a watermelon to celebrate Luling, the home of the annual "Watermelon Thump."

Well-marked natural tees with two wood blocks at the front left and front right of each tee pad. These are numbered, labeled with distances, and have an arrow on each hole indicating the direction of the basket. Course map posted near hole one. (Note: I would say that the best way to find hole one is to drive through the park looking for that sign. It is a few hundred yards away from the river and on the top level, so to speak. Don't go downhill toward the river/picnic tables area.)

Notable elevation change on five holes. Also, there are some beautiful views of the river, though the river itself doesn't come into play unless you are way off line on a hole.

Mature trees throughout the park that provide shade on at least some part of all holes and create interesting lines and choices on many holes. (The shade is very welcome on a hot Texas afternoon!)

Good variety of hole distances. Many holes have more than one route to choose from off the tee and there are friendly lines for RHBH, RHFH, LHBH and LHFH on most of the holes, though some of these can be challenging lines.

Oil well pumps working throughout the park and some can come into play on the holes. This adds a definite local Luling flavor (and smell) to the course.

There are a lot of good holes on this course that are fun to play. Hole 9 is shaded by trees throughout and has a low ceiling. Hole 15 is similar and has multiple lines, but requires shot-shaping. Hole 11 is a long, open hole with a creative green area, featuring a guardian tree with the basket on a slope. Hole 4 plays on a gentle downhill slope with a line of trees with overhanging branches to the right. Hole 1 and hole 3 both have interesting elevation changes and line choices on the tee shot, though their fairways cross each other (more on that soon).

Cons:

There are no true par four or "two shot" holes on the course. Though the signage indicates that the par for the course is 70 (Yes, 70!), I think all of these holes would play as par 3 for tournament golf. The longest hole is 465' and very open. There are 4 holes over 400' in length, 8 holes between 300' and 400', and 6 holes less than 300' in length.

The major "con" of this course is definitely the design. The danger to fellow disc golfers and to other park users would be significant if more than one or two groups were playing the course at the same time. There are 4 tee shots that are designed to fly through the fairway of another hole, plus several others where a decent but not great tee shot could easily be near the tee area or basket of another hole.

Of the first 6 holes, 5 of them are designed such that an experienced player might hit a player in the area of another tee box or basket with a slight release error or tree kick. It would be a very dangerous situation for tournament play or even for multiple cards in the park. The tee for hole 6 is facing hole 5s basket almost directly, about 80' away. Those first 6 holes are not the only problem. Hole 10's basket is about 30' from the tee for 18 and about 45' from the basket for 17 and I think many players would choose to throw a RHFH off the tee of 10. A great shot on that line goes right through the tee box of 18.

Also, an incredible 13 of the 18 holes are actually designed for the tee shot to fly across one of the park roads. These are dirt roads, but on the weekday afternoon when I played I waited for cars 4 times before teeing off. (Note photo of hole 6. I stopped and took the photo while waiting for the trucks on the road to cross the fairway.) Holes 14, 16, and 17 play very close to a soccer field. I would guess that disc golfers would need to skip these holes if soccer players were present.

Other Thoughts:

The entrance to the park does not look like a park entrance, it looks like you are driving into an oil field, which you are! Trust the written directions or the GPS coordinates and look carefully.

The river is beautiful, but it never comes into play. This could be considered a "pro" by those whose main goal is not to lose discs or a "con" by those who prefer courses with a lot of risk vs. reward choices.

This course is very difficult to rate, for me. If the park is even semi-crowded, there will be an almost-constant danger of hitting others with discs, delays to wait for vehicles to clear flight paths, and probably the necessity to skip some holes that play near other park users. On the other hand, if you and your group have the whole park to yourselves, there are some fun holes to play around mature shade trees, with good quality baskets and interesting shot choices.

That smell will stick with you, but the river and the trees are nice and it is good to see more towns like Luling dedicating park space to disc golf.

This course has potential but ... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Lots of mature trees
- Scenic area along the river
- Very cool "watermelon" themed number plates on the baskets
- Brand spanking new Mach V baskets

Cons:

- The design is just so so, could be so much better given the land and the trees there.
- Many many of the holes throw across another fairway or past another basket or directly across another tee box, really has potential to be VERY dangerous is a lot of people are playing
- Natural tee pads
- Course was not well maintained, it just opened and grass is shin high on almost the hole course
- soccer players parked directly next a basket and in another fairway

Other Thoughts:

Honestly I had higher hopes for this course. It could be great and it just opened so maybe they'll tweak it and work out the kinks. Almost looks like it was designed by a non-disc golfer.
