2014 Tourney Videos

Thanks so much!

I definitely agree about playing the course, I'm gonna try to squeeze in a round this weekend after the pros are done Saturday. I've never played Oak Grove so I really want to. That is if my legs are still functioning after filming two rounds. :p

If you can, you might try to play some before they start in the morning (8:30am) even though there will a lot of people out warming up. At the AMs last weekend things finished around 5pm and the sun sets well before 6pm so you won't get a lot of time to play.

Having done a lot of research on terrible lies at OG, I can say that it will take more than one round to see them all.

Thanks for the suggestions, and thanks for watching! I like the ideas, and I'll incorporate what I can. :)

Hey, if you get the chance to do an in the bag with Max Nichols, can you ask him why he throws lefty backhands and righty forehands? I've seen him do that in a couple of vids now I believe... does he throw forehand with both hands? Is he naturally right or left handed? And when does he decide to throw righty forehand vs. lefty backhand since they both naturally finish to the right?

As someone who throws mostly left handed off the tee, I enjoy watching Max play and seeing the lines he takes vs. the right handed players...

I'll see what I can do. I've got a 2+ hour drive tomorrow morning, planning on leaving at 5:30. Thankfully Kevin has played the course a bunch, and I'm going to watch 3.5 rounds of golf there. Plus whatever holes I can squeak in.

Wow that was an awesome tourney. I got some great footage. 3 full rounds, 2 with dual cam, the final 9 with 2 cams, and interviews with McBeth, Simon Lizotte, Kyle Eckmann, and dgcr homie Alex Johnson.

Very nice!! Can't wait, you guys do an awesome job!

Great to meet you Ian.
Always a challenge at OG and that is what keeps bringing me back.
At least I was lucky to get put on that first card with Simon, Kyle, and Rico, so I could watch some of best around play the course with talent.
Going to be humbling to re-watch my numerous flubs and miscues during that round.

Major props to CCDG for covering the sport we all love!

Alright fellow DGCR's, please no Wintertime Open spoilers! CGDC, you guys are awesome! I'm hoping I don't stumble upon a spoiler on Facebook :)

Here is a tourney recap vid I did for the Wintertime Open. It shows highlights, low lights, and some key shots. There are tons of spoilers so if you're waiting for the stroke coverage (which will have tons of dual cam action unlike this vid), and don't want the surprise ruined, don't watch this. If you guys like it, let me know, and I can try and do this for future tourneys. Hope ya dig it!

Let's see if I have the willpower to not watch this until AFTER the actual tourney footage.

Yeahh.....

Yea this almost isn't fair. I REALLY want to watch a 51 minute teaser video... but I also want the unfiltered tourney coverage.

First world problems right here.

After watching the Wintertime Open Video, I had several questions, which might best be answered under the course design thread. First I found several artificial mandos (having never played this course, I may be misled); were these to make the course more demanding? I've always thought mandos were 90% related to safety and 10% to shaping the shot line. Second was the shape of the concrete pads; only on hole one did the pros stray from the straight direction (tee misaligned?). These hexagonal pads are nice, but almost double the cost of concrete. Where concrete wasn't there, fly pads were used. Better to have all concrete?

Final thought--I liked Nikko's new haircut.

You have to keep in mind that Oak Grove is one of the oldest courses (at least ones with baskets/targets made specifically for disc golf) in the country. It was designed first when people were using regular Frisbees. It has since gone through many, many changes. Some holes needed mandos for safety as discs flew farther, some holes needed mandos to maintain some level of challenge or to retain some of the original intended flight paths as trees fell and new trees grew. The tee pads on some holes may have been installed when the fairway was pointing in a different direction back in the day.

I enjoyed the Wintertime Open highlight video. I liked the fact that there was no music, and it was much easier to follow the action compared to other highlight videos I've seen. Good stuff! I wonder if that crazy overstable Destroyer Paul was using on his sidearm is one of the "PD2 topped" Destroyers. Also, Simon is a beast.

That is not the normal layout of Oak grove... Most of those mandys were specifically for the tournament to make the course longer and more challenging.

Fun Fact- Oak Grove is THE oldest Disc Golf Course being the first with baskets designed and installed by Steady Ed. It felt historically significant to play there for sure.
