Driving Putters, I finally get it.

Okay, so like most new players - I wanted to throw mids and drivers right off the bat. I wanted throw as far as possible, etc. and blew past the "learn to drive a putter" once I could throw it 250'.

I had gotten out of the habit of drivnig putters during fieldwork, but recently (about 3 weeks ago) I started getting some serious elbow pain from overdoing it with forehands and so I had to take some time off.

This last week, I've been easing back into throwing backhand and to make sure I keep it chill, I've been solely using putters.

Because I'm really being ginger with the arm, I've stopped strong arming completely and I'm feeling ridiculously accurate to 250' with zero OAT. I've never had zero OAT before trying to throw a putter 250'.

Typically I could hyzer flip a putter pretty far, but I was definitely getting a little flutter out of the hand.

What I like the most about it, is that I can immediately diagnose even the smallest bit of shoulder dip or nose-up issues because the discs simply don't fight anything off like a stable mid or driver will.

I finally understand why the better players that I play with will throw putters at almost everything under 300'.

I really like driving with putters, but have found that I get a sort of mental grip lock on narrow wooded holes. On an open shot, I can drive a putter clean and straight, but have trouble keeping it straight when there's lots of trees involved. This isn't quite an issue with mids and drivers, which is why it seems like grip lock due to the deepness. I'm sure I just need to practice and get more confident in those conditions with putters.

My game has crashed and burned the last few weeks after a really good stretch. It might be time for another putter onlt stretch. Thansk for the reminder. Practicing with putters certainly helps smooth out my throw, and cleans up form. Gonna go see what I can shoot at our toughest local course with only a couple putters next week.

I don't like to drive with my putters because the deep rim just doesn't feel right for a clean release. Although I have been practicing this more, I just think it's awkward.

Putt and approach  maybe some day I'll throw my putters 300' consistently...

I really need to do this more. It's just always temping for me to throw a mid or driver when I'm on the pad.

If I can get to where I want to be with an opto Pure, I'll always throw it. Nothing has done more to lower my score than discing down.

Have you tried some of the more shallow putters? The Pure is obviously a huge favorite, but I've recently been messing around with an Axiom Envy and it is a more comfortablePure with some really good HSS. Worth looking at if you don't like your current set up.

Envy feels more like mid than a putter, great driving putter. Tried to drive with my putting putter Aviar today, and that felt weird...

I'd like to do putter only rounds also, but my home course has some holes with lots of elevation and big winds, and I feel it's nearly impossible to throw putters in those conditions (I know its possible but not for me).

Being a newb I keep hearing to disc the f down. Think I will go out with nothing but putters so the temptation is not there. Too much fun figuring out what they all do.

The best part is out-driving your friends who use nothing but drivers and OAT to get distance.

"Man, what did you throw? That was accurate and you out drove me."

Muhahaha. It was my Ion.

Plus, when you work with your putters, you will be able to range them much better, which will improve your upshot game dramatically.

It's even more fun to tee off with a Polecat and parking the same hole. Nothing like being able to pick up your bag, turn around, and the disc still be in the air.

As weird as it seems, I really like throwing the Vibram Soft Sole. It's ridiculously floppy, but it flies so nice and then drops outta the air. Great disc for landing on hard-packed dirt if you don't want to skid to far. I love this disc for upshots. LOVE IT.

170 Anodes... I have 4 of them. They're really nice for everything from putting to driving - and have almost no fade. So much glide. Biggest issue is that they turn in to a slick mess with any moisture.

175 Ion... nice step up in stability from the anode - more fade for sure.

172 Lat64 Mercy - not loving it as a driver. It's turning into a warble monster after about 3 weeks of field work. That soft plastic feels great in the hand, but I fear that after a few hard tree hits, it's going to look like kermet the frog's head.

DGA Breaker... headwind driver. So nice. Wish the plastic wasn't so slick out of the box, but a little dirt and wear has fixed that. Serious fade. Love it for windy days. Personally, I hate it for putting - but great for driving.

Vibram Ridge - used to like these, but they seem to get worse in the hand with more wear, getting slicker over time. I've found better driving putters.

I actually do like my ESP Zone as a driving putter. I use it as a short midrange and have been having success with it, although it has a tendency to skip when I don't want it to. I've tried putting with the Zone but it seems like I can't get spin on it like my regular putters.

I agree. Nice, too, on the longer holes, when you see it's on a perfect line, you can call your friends at home and they drive over to see it hit metal. :D

Next time I throw mine I'll give you a call, and you can hop on a plane! :D

I am the exact opposite. I have no problems throwing putters in the woods, because I feel like I've got better control. On open shots, I'm more likely to try and overpower something else -- and don't get very good results. I've thrown a driver less than 100' off a wide-open tee pad before, just because I was trying to throw too hard and got sloppy.

I'll do it, but it's gotta be worth the ticket price. If you think you have ace runs going on at least three holes, at the same time, give me a shout and I'll come up to watch. ;)
