[Innova] Thunderbird

I read somewhere that they don't have a lot of control over it. They buy whatever plastic pellets they can find and hope for the best. I would assume if they had the ability to make all their DX discs feel like these Thunderbirds, they would.

The same seems to be true with McPro plastic. The 2015 Aviars were much stiffer than the 2016's.

I'm sure you are right. Kinda goes along with the topic here.

If you had to compare the stability of a current run Champion Thunderbird to an 11x and a 12x Champion Teebird, where would it fall?

So this just came from DGU's twitter account:

I really don't like the sound of "softer, flexy feel" for new DX Thunderbirds. It sounds like Innova might have only had a small batch of the Thunderbird DX plastic and it's finally run out. Maybe this is not the case, but given that they haven't run anything else in their lineup in this blend of DX, I tend to think they didn't have that much of it to begin with. I just bought the 4 heaviest DX Thunderbirds Infinite had left (175 and 171). DGC didn't have any DX's above 150. I'd say if you like amazing stiff DX plastic, buy the current run Thunderbirds while you can!

Assuming my Champs are representative of the current run:
ThB vs 11x - ThB has less HSS and more fade. ThB has slightly less glide IMO but honestly I have a hard time quantifying "glide."

ThB vs 12x - there are so many 12X that I have a hard time generalizing. For expedience I will use the same description as above: less HSS, more fade, less glide.

buy the current run Thunderbirds while you can!
booooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
but thanks for the heads-up!

I don't like the sound of that either. But DGU will be sure to continue to feed us that b.s. propaganda unless we bring the hammer down on them an inundate them to bring back the "Thunderbird DX" blend, and NOT take any excuses about the raw materials...

Do you think Innova has an order form from their suppliers that has a check box for "Thunderbird DX" and they are just purposely withholding it from their customers?

Or do you think maybe, just maybe, they don't have the buying power to purchase specific/consistent types of plastic pellets?

I know, right? I'd be interested to see if they purchase TL or LTL, and how many suppliers they source from.

I believe that if people let Innova know that they want that good "Thunderbird DX" material, then Innova would find a way to get more consistent raw materials. I believe they could do it if they really wanted to. And the way to make them really want to is for us end users to let them know we want that good material. Would it cost more? Most likely. But I get the idea that many here might pay a little more to get that good DX material in their Thunderbirds as well as other discs...

My understanding is that Innova just buys leftover/castoff plastic pellet lots from much larger companies. The problem as I understand it is that the only way to get a very specific plastic formula in an economical way is to buy a crap ton of it (not to mention the cost of actually developing the exact formula to start). I don't know exactly how much that is and whether what's in their way is storing the pellets or the up front cost or if the pellets go bad in the California heat when they're not used within a certain time frame or what. At any rate, supposedly Innova (and pretty much all the disc manufacturers other than MVP who have an "in" because their family owns a plastics company) end up having to buy larger companies' leftovers in order produce discs at an economic price point. I don't think that just because a small number of customers on DGCR clamors for more consistency that it would move the needle for an operation like Innova though because I'm sure they've examined the options and the economics just are what they are.

Is anyone else throwing the holiday luster Thunderbird? It is my favorite Thunderbird so far. So much glide and it feels faster than the typical champion Thunderbirds.

I got my G-Star Thundy in yesterday. I hope to give it a go this Sunday if the weather is willing, we are supposed to have some rainy weather for the next few days .

I will report back soon.

I have some CFR luster thunderbirds, what sticks out to me is how stiff they are compared to regular champ. Is yours that way?

The most recent run of DX Thunderbirds has Thundrbird tooled on the bottom of the flight plate.
As DGU posted they are still flat but a lot softer. Time to pick up a few more of the firmer run with no tooling.

Thanks for the heads up! I like the name on the tooling; hopefully Innova will do that with all their molds eventually (then the collectors' market will have something to lust after other than patent numbers on Destroyers, lol). Glad I picked up those 4 DX's; they are definitely nice and stiff and grippy. I threw one on Sunday and it was just as overstable as I expected. Whenever someone buys one of these new softer DX's, I'll be interested to hear if they are as overstable as the older ones.

I can't tell if the letters are raised or indented.

The tooling is indented. I got few RHFH throws with the tooled TH and at 300ft it had a little turn and finished in a straight line. IMO the firmer non tooled has a tad more stability and fade.
