[Innova] Beast, Old mold vs. new mold

The recent mold change makes sense, I snagged a gstar looking for a nice fh hyzerflip disc and it was much more over stable than what I was looking for.

On a side note, buddy of mine found a nice pearly 2x, neon green probably at least 7/10 with no ink. I told him I'd trade it for some new plastic for him if anybody is interested.

^ this, plus it was a lot more consistent for me. I could have probably worked the new one info the bag somewhere, but found it very touchy for release angles.

Here is something I made to show the old vs. new from the disc profile view.

Atl Scott, I can't see your images. The link to imageshack doesn't work for me.

The old mold has a curved "x-type" bevel on the rim. The new mold has a flat "L-type" rim configuration. If you don't know what that means the underside of the rim on an old mold beast is more like an orc in that it is curved and the new type is nice and flat.

I have an old mold pro beast that has no BS designation (and a couple pro beasts that are new molds). I think 2x old molds are pretty few and far between. I have around 6 or 7 old mold beasts and love them but strangely enough have only the new mold beast in the bag (my flippiest driver for huge anny's and some rollers).

Ive got two 2002 World Champion Beast and a Proline, the specs on all three are similar with the exception of the Proline plastic feeling a bit more tackier.

The original mold was more stable. Once the Orc came out, Innova decided the two discs were too close in flight and retooled the Beast to be flippier. That's pretty much it.
I have a slightly different understanding of what transpired (but I certainly may be wrong). My comments only relate to the Proline/Pro plastics and are substantiated by my personal experience.

For a number of years the Proline Orc was my primary driver, so I am quite familiar with the disc.
-I'm pretty sure that the Orc came out a while before the Beast.
-Then the first/old Beast was made. I don't remember ever throwing an old Beast.
*Innova changed to a new Orc mold that is more overstable than the old Proline Orc.
*Innova took the old Orc mold and made it the new Beast mold.
-The new Pro Beast flies with about the same characteristics of the old Proline Orc. So I changed primary drivers from Proline Orc to Pro Beast and they fly pretty much the same for me.
-The new Pro Orc is more stable than the new Pro Beast (old Proline Orc).

Beast definitely came out before the Orc, you can research when they were released
Thanks for the clarification. Since I didn't throw Beasts when they first came out I didn't really pay attention with when they were first made.

Where would one find the release dates of when Beasts and Orcs went into production? Does Innova publish that info somewhere?

The PDGA tracks the approval dates for discs.
Thanks. Had to dig a little at pdga.com but I found the list of approved discs. Kinda cool to have.

Beast came out first. Beast Dec 2002. Orc Jan 2004
I should not have even said that in the first place because it was just a vague impression. It's also not relevant to the main point that I wanted to make.

I'm still pretty sure that the old Orc old became (or was retooled as) the new Beast mold, though. I think that comes from Dave Dunipace on the PDGA Discussion board.

What does ThreePutt or the other disc gurus say?

I am certain that the Pro Orc I now have in my possession is more overstable than the Proline Orcs that I threw before that. This Pro Orc is also more stable than the Pro Beast the I now have.

Since I switched to Pro Beasts from Proline Orcs I now am more familiar with current Beasts than with current Orcs.

I know many claim the old mold and orc were very similar. However, there were a few guys around here who loved their orcs, I just didn't get along with it. They didn't fare very well with my dx and champ old molds. I know there's a ton of discs out there, but I always get annoyed when they take a mold OOP because it's "too similar" to another, when there are a lot of players who don't feel that way at all.

Sorry for the rant.

I have two 2x champ beasts if anyone wants em. Or I'll trade for "old mold" beasts :)

wouldn't it be funny if the 2x ends up being more valuable than the old mold beast? quite the reverse.

Here is what I know about Orcs: I can't throw one. :|

The Beast from what I understand got tweaked a lot. There might have been three different versions of what we now consider the "old mold." There was also a lot of plastic tweaking going on then, so some of what I thought was mold changes could have been plastic changes molding up differently. Who knows?

Every Orc I tried faded waaayyy too hard for me. I never threw an Orc that was anywhere close to the current Beast (which I actually can throw so I guess I better stock up. :\ ) I could kinda/sorta throw the Beast before it was switched to the L mold so maybe I'll be able to throw the new one? Still can't throw an Orc, though.

Also, in the interest of total transparency, I should mention that I can't throw an Orc. :|

The old mold beasts have a concave wing, very similar to how an orc looks. The old mold beasts fly quite similar to a wraith.
