[Innova] Which tern is your tern?

Champ terns in high 160s. I've posted this before but I can do this turnover drive on a 375ft hole though various trees and it'll go straight then leeeeft then come back right (LHBH) and I've parked it. Which is weird because I have a hard time getting 380ft on open fields with the tern but when I do a huge s curve in a tight fairway I can reach 375ft with a regular drive that probably travelled a lot longer than that.

The tern can be weird like that.

Quoted For Truth!
I just parked Mt. Airy #14 in the 375' pin position tonight with a B-E-A-U-tiful, low S-curve. Loved getting that deuce because I usually can't throw past 280-320'. I think the stars were aligned. Well, the two in my bag were, anyway.

^exactly what I meant. The huge s curve on an actual golf line that ends up being longer than open field shots.

The tern.

I have three or four gummy champs, one or two champs, and a g* that share space in my bag. In my experience, the mold is not consistent and each disc must be evaluated for its flight characteristics. This feature does make for mold minimization, though it can be frustrating and costly.

Champion Jolly launcher Tern. Thrown low and hard, and it does what a Tern does beautifully. It's not much of a distance disc for me. 360-390' but it hyzer flips straight, and fades right like a champ.

Got me a Star 167gr for the sole purpose of hyzer flipping. Have only thrown it a few times as the weather has turned here and the wind is ridicules. The few chances I did have to throw it so far, seems I'm going to like it. Might have to wait for spring now! Grrrr.

this probably true but it's so hard for me to give up on it due to the distance potential.

Is there less glide/distance on the champ than the star version?

It seems that most prefer champ due to more HSS. I've thrown a champ twice and it had a way tighter S flight than I expected.

Max wt champ and 172 *. The champ is so workable, I throw it a lot for 350+. Pretty dependable in wind @ moderate or less. The * is squirrely for me, but gets plenty of tailwind/taller lines/absolute max D-open hole drives. It's actually the best BH roller disc for me, but I don't have much of one, so...

I feel like the Champ/Star combo is a good set up...Champs excel at lower lines, Star is better at going tall.

Many people judge the amount of glide by how big the L->R (rhbh) s-turn of a disc is, since that gets more distance. Hence, a more HSS disc gets the lesser glide rating.

However, both my most and least HSS Terns are JL champion; so (to answer your question), I'd say glide is pretty consistent between plastics.

I've throw and owned a few Terns. The one I keep in my bag is a Star 175g bubble gum pink huk lab Tern. My favorite tern was a 175g blue star tern. It was much older than my current pink one and it seemed I could control the lines with it much better..... Lost that one in the drink :( I also tried a 148g star lite tern, but ended up trading it to a friend since it never got any play from me. With that said, I do not find the Tern to be a "go to" disc for me, but I always keep one in my bag for those special shots that require it. I've probably got my furthest drive from a tern (500'-ish) that I can't seem to replicate again! I've been keeping a brand new Tern in my reserves, but this thread makes me want to bust it out and see how it flies.

Not really, a big S curve is not the best indication of glide, as many times the disc is moving more laterally than forward when it turns and comes back.

My favorite Terns are 170ish Champions. The -2 HSS rating is spot on and I'll throw it with a bit of hyzer, then it will slowly flip up, over and come back for max D shots. Very reminiscent of beat Star Wraiths, albeit a bit touchier (due to the higher speed) but also a bit longer.

My favorite one was my first which was a 175 Blue champ. Stiff as hell and beefy. Flew closer to a slightly beaten in destroyer with tons of glide with very lil turn. I could throw that thing 2ft off the ground and it would still go 400ft. I tried metal flakes, glows and a bunch of other champs and haven't found another on as stable. If anyone has any beefy ones, lmk. I'm willing to trade.

Man, I hear ya about those stiff champ max weight beefy blues. Tasty candy indeed. Only problem is when I don't trust her and try to finesse her, she'll go OB left on me all day.
