So rather than put this in the previous Gateway Bag thread I thought I would add it here for easier search purposes. Today I swung by the Gateway factory and picked up one of their new Kilimanjaro bags. Below you will find my thoughts, but I will add this disclaimer. I am a big fan of gateway, partially for their awesome customer service. I am partial to the brand, but have not picked up one of their bags in the past because I didn't care for them.

So first off some photos of the outside. I picked this up in green. They also had Red, Black, Blue, and Woodland camo.

The frame is akin to gateway frames of the past. PVC rails with corrugated plastic sides. Very light and simple. As the bag wears you may even be able to space it out for a disc or so more storage down the line.

I had 17 discs stored in the main disc storage area. 3 shallow putters, 4 mids, 2 speed 7's, 5 speed 9ish discs, 3 speed 13 ish discs. Of course if you don't use as many putters as I do your storage will increase.
There is a putter pocket that holds 2 putters. This picture shows a wizard and scale. If you put with something more like an envy or colt you may be able to fit 3. The mini pocket feels secure and is shown with a gateway stash mini, which is somewhat large by mini standards.

The flap that closes over the main storage compartment rolls up and is stowed out of the way by velcro on the straps.

The bottom compartment is sizable and vented. I can easily stash a moderate sized hoodie in there. I could also fit a rain shell as well. A pair of shoes may fit in here after a round, or of course this can be used for extra disc storage. The flap is mesh, so for those of you that like to annoy me and carry speakers with you this could be the perfect pocket.

The side pockets are super deep. Each have a mesh pocket on the outside as you can see above. Each also have a felt pocket for valuables. One side is bigger than the other, so all phones should be able to fit. I will probably use this to stash a few utility discs, in the picture there is a dog disc, vibram soft summit, and vibram soft ibex in the pocket.

Next message for more

There is a flat pocket in the main compartment. I would assume this is a good pocket for a scorecard and pens, but it isn't easily accessible with the discs in.

There are two water bottle pockets attached to the back side. Each have a grommet on the bottom as well as an opening in the corner for draining. I didn't have a 32oz Gatorade or 1L Nalgene on me, but a 28oz Gatorade bottle fits super easily. I will update once I get my hands on larger bottles.

The straps are well padded, the back has padding, but does not have super deep channels like other packs. There is a handle at the very top of the backpack straps, which should help distribute the wear and tear between the two straps. There is a sternum strap, which I know many people don't like. I for one do, so glad it is included, but it should be able to be removed easily enough.

The bottom I am told is 1200 Denier. It feels nice and tough, and I for one am glad the bag doesn't have feet.

Zippers are YKK

A metal D-ring is included on each side, for those of you who like to sound like ill tuned wind chimes when you walk. (Maybe that is why you need the speakers)

All in all I like the bag. My only complaints at first blush are as follows.

1)The drink holders could be closer to the back, for even weight distribution.
2)The drink holders could be collapsable in some form and secured to get them out of the way.
3) I worry that the bottoms of the drink holders aren't tough enough. They could use heavier fabric and grommets around the bottom drain holes
4)Sloppy stitching on the handle between the straps. This could just be my bag, and it in no way affects the performance
5)Zipper for main flap is a bit hard to close with putters in the putter pocket. You just have to be nimble.
6)Flap pocket in inetrior of disc storage is hard to access and stow. I assume I could always leave it out, but that would make disc storage sloppier.
7)Wish there was a dedicated slot for a pencil.

These are minor gripes, they obviously did not keep me from purchasing the bag.

Pros:
1) Lots of versatility in pockets. It is nice to have two "soft pockets" as I often carry sunglasses with me
2) Higher storage area makes for a super versatile lower area and it gets your discs closer to you than sitting on the ground.
3) Good quality materials in a simple package. According to the guys at gateway there will be some degree of warranty against defects. It pretty much sounded like send it back and we will fix it, but you will want to confirm that with them.
4) Pretty comfortable. It doesn't feel real long nor real wide. Sits where a pack should, which is much higher than we all carried are school back packs. For reference I am 5'10" and about 150 lbs.
5) Understated design. This is a huge plus for me as I am not one for large logos or screen printing all over my bag. Now in saying this it will get an RDG patch, and there is plenty of room for one.
6) Simple frame. The frame is simple and not fully integrated. I see this as a bonus because it will be cheap and easy to fix if your bag happens to get crushed (It has happened to me). It is also light.
7) I really dig the bottom pocket it is one of the more unique features of the bag.
8) CUSTOMER SERVICE. Gateway by far has the best I have encountered in the DG world. During the purchasing of this bag the guys down there just reinforced that.

The bag runs at $199 retail. In gateway fashion there are opportunities to get discs when you buy the bag. I would keep an eye on their facebook and webpage during black Friday.

Well let me know if you want a closer look at anything!

I like a lot of what I see, but I share some concerns about the drink holders. They just look like they'll eventually be a problem.

Having the discs sitting up higher like that would be super convenient. Although, with the pvc rack open to the bottom of the bag, you may want to bag or box your items that are sitting below the discs.

I don't know...all in all, I like it compared to some other designs.

Thanks for the write up. I'd be curious to see the other color options.

From their facebook.

I would agree with bagging or boxing, but since I will probably use it for a sweater, soft shell, or rain shell, I won't have much need for one.

Played a round with it. No top heavy tipping issues that I noticed. Even on hills.

Pardon the sarcasm in my post btw. I am just pulling you jangly boom box toting fellas legs.

I like the look of it, but probably will not drop $200 on a bag. Love the colors though.

Awesome review get. I appreciate the time it took to add all of the photos and write up such a detailed analysis. Enjoy the bag I think it looks really nice and like the fresh take on a backpack style bag.

Just to add a clarification from Gateway. The pouch in the main compartment is intended to be used as a rain flap or dust cover when the top is rolled up.

I just purchased that deal after reading this review... Even if I don't like the bag, having 10 putters for $140 can be a justifiable purchase lol. Hoping I was/am in the first 20 to order it!

That is a crazy deal but that bag looks like a turd. It might have a ton of storage and be comfortable but I cannot get over how fugly it looks.

I like that name though.

The more I look at it the more I really dislike the bottle holders on the front. Almost seems like they were forgotten until the end and then just slapped on.
Eh, good thing we have choices.

Hahahaha, coming from the guy rocking an upper Park bag.

That's literally what happened. The original proto just had that stretch mesh on the side that could theoretically hold water bottles.

It kinda makes sense, Because after getting rid of my flak 4 I'm 100% against water bottle holders that are attached to side pockets and not the main body of the bag. But putting the water weight so far away from your body seems like it would be very uncomfortable

I carried 2L with me as I was playing a round this morning. They don't flop around as much as I thought they might, but I do wonder if sliding the side pockets a half inch forward and moving the pockets toward the back in the same form may balance weight better. I never felt back heavy, but am curious.

The advantage of where they are is that the pockets still feel low profile.

I would agree with Pb with his views on water bottle holders on side pockets. In saying that I have some flask style bottles that may fit quite nicely in the side pockets.... hmmm

To play devils advocate about the water holders location, the one disadvantage of them being close to your body in the traditional location is the tendency to bang your elbows on them when putting the bag on and off. If these carry the weight without pulling on your shoulders or add stress to the pockets they may be a good thing.
