As the title says, I am almost at the point of giving up the game. I am just throwing/playing so bad right now that going to the course ruins my day and really makes me hate my self...:(. I know that sounds stupid but I am man enough to admit it.

Disc Golf is not even fun at this point, it has become such a number chasing game and I am almost forcing my self to go play.

Over the last several months my distance has gone from pushing 300' to 320' at times on the course to a good rip ( yeah, right?) gets me 275' max.

I used to be good at approach shots now that's gone, I am weak-arming my shots and they hyzer/fade too early. I have lost the ability to throw a straight mid/putter shot.

I got decent around the basket from 25' and in for a while, now I get "basket panic" on 10 footers . I have zero confidence at the moment...

My mental game is not existent and I continually tell my self "You Suck" after every mistake...bad drives ,bad ups , missed putts.

Feeling like having a disc clearing house sale right now. Keep an eye out for my sale thread.

Most likely I need to take a break for a bit and comeback to it. I used to do this every year at one point, no playing, no dg on the internet, etc. Just sequester my self away for a couple of weeks or so.

The weather was sooo great here that we pretty much did not have a winter season. I just could not "not" play when the weather was so awesome thru Dec, Jan, and Feb.

Pretty sure it has been over a year ( maybe two ) of playing with no break time/time away. I might just disappear for a bit or lurk here and there occasionally. I really don't want to give up the game. I am just tired of being so excited to go play and then quickly being so disappointed with my self afterwards....

Thanks for letting me vent and "share my feelings" ( I know men are not supposed to do that right? ) with you guys here. This is a great place and would miss it if I quit cold turkey.

Take a break. It's supposed to be a fun hobby, and it'll be there for you when you want to come back to it. Trying to force it only makes it worse.
No rash decisions. :)

Time out

Sounds like you need a time out. Every once in a great while I've found myself getting to a point of frustration that makes me want to just throw my bag into the nearest pond. When I get to that point I know it's time to step back, take a break, usually week, then come back again refreshed. Hope that helps.

Remember it's more than just disc golf. It's exercise, enjoying awesome parks around you and vitamin D. Just stop keeping score.

Yeah, some times I want to leave my bag at hole #1 with a note that says, " Good Luck" or cut every flight plate and throw all my discs in the nearest trash can .

The OCD that lives inside me wont let that happen....

Chasing those numbers is a cruel and addictive bitch sometimes...

I used to feel this way a lot, then I started coaching wrestling over winter. The couple months away from dg went a long way in rejuvenating the game for me. The time away provided a mental reset that utilize every off season now.

Spell it out slowly....

F- U - (get yer mind outta the gutter) N! :)

This is all you need and to remember the "F-U-N" part.

I've been there a few times and walking away for a brief time always worked.

I got that way last year, everything just fell apart and almost quit. Started going out for solo rounds with nothing but a putter and a mid, discovered I had developed a really bag grip that wasn't allowing the disc to rip out.

Take it easy, don't be too hard on yourself and play for your own enjoyment, never mind the score, never mind the distance, try something different, throw forehands, rollers or what ever with just a few discs. Learning new ways of throwing has always helped me when I'm in a slump.

It sounds like you're frustrated and sick of sucking. Have you tried to actually get better? Playing disc golf isn't the best way to get better at disc golf. Doing field work, with video analysis is (or upshot/putting practice if that's your problem area). If you're only throwing 275, you have major form problems. Film yourself, and compare it to pros, or post it here or on r/discgolf to get some tips. Stop beating your head into a wall and expecting it to start feeling good.

^ Good advice.

Flip side of that is to not care at all and go back to having fun at the process and not being worried so much at the results.

It's really a matter of personal preference, and what each person wants or needs from the game.

If you don't want to take a break go platy a few putter only or 2-3 disc rounds. It takes the pressure of scoring away and allows you to throw 1 disc on a bunch of angles...which benefits things later on.

I see what your saying but the opposite approach helped me stay in love. To each their own. I am content with my skill level being a 900 rated player. The practice and analyzing is what was gonna burn me out.

Maybe get more involved in your local scene, run a league take a different approach to the game as opposed to looking at it as just numbers.

This also. Played a birdie bash, don't throw vibram but throwing the same 2 unfamiliar disc on my home course was very refreshing. Made me want to do it more and tinker with my form a little on the way.

To the OP

What do you like or what did you like about disc golf?

Useful ways to avoid burnout and hang around DG:
- Create or become more active in your club
- Work on existing course project or try to get new one underway
- Help run or become non-playing TD of leagues or events
- Run for PDGA Board member
- Teach others how to play disc golf
- Create new ratings system to mess with other players' numbers
- Travel to review new courses by making some throws but not play full rounds
- Take DG photos or create video tours of local courses
- Volunteer to help at major disc golf events

Getting off the dg-related internet periodically will do wonders for anyone's perspective on the game. I can say that with confidence from my personal experience.

Get back to what drew you into the game initially and walk some of that path again. Maybe it's 2-disc+beer rounds, maybe it's solitude in nature, maybe it's just hanging at the course on a day off and socializing without playing. Love the game again and it'll love you back!

This looks like a cry for help, Craig. ;)
