What Is/Was Your Favorite Now Extinct Course?

What level of extinction are we talking about here? Are we talking courses that are actually no longer in the ground? Or just extinct old layouts like Bracketts, or courses that are "extinct" like no longer officially "listed" like Flyboy?

Bracketts old layout would top Hornets Nest on my list.

Here in Billings, a lot of people speak in hushed tones about the old 18 hole layout of Pioneer Park. Often you'll see the old timers solemnly pouring out the first sips of a fresh pint in memory of that fabled course.

I've played a version of the original 18 that was set up temp for the state games last summer. It's a fun course for sure, but Pioneer can't support a good 18 hole layout on a permanent basis due to the multiple-use nature of the park.

Dalaiwood, Scott Papa's old course. The course still exists, but is no longer playable to the public. By no means was it a pro-level course, and it was a bit rustic, but it was well-loved, extremely fun to play, and it had a great vibe that's hard to put into words.

Hornet's Nest may be currently extinct (due to external construction) but Charlotte DGC plans to re-open it within the next year, redesigning it to be an even more challenging destination course. Was my Charlotte favorite.

Coyote Trace...I predicted a future top 10 in my review of it. Little Bighorn brings back memories of a $29 side bet I won there :)

Assuming you mean truly gone (which eliminates Flyboy and Blue Gill from the conversation):
I'd have to say Carly's Playground: dual tees + dual color coded baskets draped like spaghetti across ski hills... that course was epic. Have to mention Brackett's old layout as well.

The RIP'd course I miss the most is definitely Bonnie Brook: water, elevation, more water, dual tees, interesting and novel holes, bombers, woods... Definitely would've rated it a 4.0 had I gotten around to reviewing it (with potential for more as they improved). Loved playing there, not only for the wonderful DG variety, but also for all the continuous improvements and TLC Ted & Lydia put into it. It was right on my way home and I made it out there pretty much every Thu while it was open.

The course is still there but it got redesigned when I was a kid. The old Valley View in New Berlin. I wish I could play the old setup now that I'm older. I didn't appreciate how great the old setup was when I was younger.

The old brackets bluff layout was a lot of fun. The new one is nice for the land it's on but it's not when close to the beauty and challenge the old course presented.

However the old Web layout at Hornet's Nest was the best course in Charlotte and even with the redesign I'm going to miss that layout a lot. I was playing that course more than any other when the news came down it was being pulled

I only have 3 RIP'ed courses- Estero DGC, Hornets Nest and Wofford College.

Estero was fun but its been redesigned and the photos look about as good as it was before the redesign.
Hornets would have to be the one I will miss the most.
Wofford was a very scenic little 9 hole that I bagged just to add SC to my list of courses. I would never have stopped there again as I have added several other SC courses.

Same here although I might think differently if I had ever played the Web layout. Really kicking myself for not doing that. :wall:

My extincts are: Bluff's old layout (twas awesome), NE Park's old layout (Jacksonville, sucked), City Lake Park's old layout (Albemarle, sucked big ones), Hornet's Nest (awesome) and then I have the "extincts" like Blue Gill, Sugaree, and Black Jack. Blue Gill is probably my favorite (sorry Mando).

Probably the tunnel course at Kensington Metropark. Black Locust has a few of the same holes, but it's mostly 'Meh' for me

I only have two proper extinct courses played on DGCR. Both of them just got an upgrade from 9 to 18, so they're not really extinct. There was a private course near us that was really popular, but the land was starting to be used for other things and it's gone now. It was better than the other local courses, so I miss it a lot.

As for "real" courses, Lake Park in Lewisville, TX is essentially extinct, at least in its previous form. Whatever becomes of it (if anything does) it's not going to be anything close to what it was.

Yea, but does it have the tower of terror component? Seriously though, the pics of blue gill conjure up images of black falls, which is above sugaree on my favorites list ; so no apology necessary.

I never got to play Laurel Springs but it sounded like a cool place to play some of the premier events back in the late 80s with some shots lofted down into a grid of Christmas trees.

I never got to play it either. I was registered for the Am Nationals there when they pulled the plug and the event got moved to burlington. Laurel Springs is legendary to those around here who got to play it.

I'd love to get a straight up comparison of laurel springs and blackjack...
