UDisc Pro price tripling

I'd venture to say a fair amount. UDisc is "included" for the 70,000 PDGA members, plus all the other non-PDGA users. Android says over 500,000 downloads, plus Apple users. Let's say another 200,000 of those are UDiscPro accounts. Yeah, it adds up quickly. Now triple it.
I don't blame them for making money, but this seems like a page from a pharmaceutical company's playbook.

The are not a non profit organization. They are a company, employing at least dozens of employees, with the exclusive goal of making as much money as they can. It is the sole purpose of the company. They should be striving to market their product at a price that will maximize their profit. Not sure what you are all twisted about. If they have missed the mark with you, in consideration to price point, don't buy their product.

Comparing them to big pharma seems hyperbolic at best.

They don't owe you anything.

That is far from meaningful. Your venture is speculation.

A more likely scenario is they've been living in ramen noodles and they are trying to make enough to hire quality people or pay a living wage to those involved.

Nobody is minting money off DG. It's a fri GE sport at best. I have no idea if UDisc is doing something nefarious by tripling prices. That IS a lot. But, if they were scraping by, or losing money, which is VERY common in technology, then they saw the opportunity with DG growth to become profitable, who can blame them ?

If you don't want to pay for it, don't. If you have no facts, tenor judgement.

I wish people would stop calling a powerful computing device "a phone," and then arguing it's not needed on course. Granted, calling it a powerful computing device ain't gonna win anyone over about its place on the course, but I value and appreciate and require the medical device calculations my "phone" does for me. And were I to find myself in a medical emergency, I like being able to place a phone call for help (and I like being prepared to do so, were it to happen).

How else am I supposed to blast Dave Matthew's Band loud enough for the entire course to hear!?

Smart phone + megaphone + duct tape

can you hit me with a lame Cortez as an encore? thx

Time and time again, especially during the pandemic, people have come up with stuff to talk about when they have very little info. Rickys Lyme disease treatment and Paul's mclaren are two examples that come to mind. We've discussed how Ricky was stupid for using wholistic medicine and then it came out that he tried the traditional methods first and they didn't work. Then Paul was supposedly managing his finances poorly when he'd been given a huge raise.

I understand some people are frustrated with the price. I'm not, but you have every right to be. Accusing uDisc of being greedy cash grabbers though? There should be no place for that.

They did allow us to purchase another year at the current price, and then I will pay the $14.95 after that. I like the app.

This. Thru May 16, 2021, you can purchase an add'l year at the current price of $4.99.

Beginning May 17, 2021, UDisc Pro will be priced at $14.99 USD per year.

Just renewed for $4.99. Zero point in waiting.

I knew there'd be these kind of answers, and that's ok. In my opinion a company tripling the price of it service with essentially no justification or real added value is pretty relevant. If Discraft were to start charging $60 a disc next month for the same disc that cost $20 this month, would that be relevant?

In the grand scheme of things an extra $0.82 per month isn't going to bankrupt me. I just dislike shady/greedy behavior by companies.
I'll probably re-up for $5 which will buy me another 6 months and get me through till this time next year. By that time maybe there will be some competition.

here's my justification - they were undercharging for it in the first place.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, really. It's just inconsequential to me for one of the most used apps on my phone (I don't use many apps besides spotify and reddit)

There's always been an initial negative reaction to companies trying to make money in the disc golf community. I'm not sure why we resist it. Do we not want to support those in the community that are literally evolving the sport? Perhaps it's because Disc Golf has traditionally been very low cost to the average player, and we have a decent amount of our population that holds on to these nostalgic values of the sport.

However, most of us drop literally thousands of dollars over the years on discs and tournament fees. Not to mention all the secondary fees involved in travelling to courses and tournaments. $15 a year is a drop in the bucket overall.

We eventually suck it up and pay the price anyway. Remember when DGPT started charging to watch their coverage. Remember when there was a brand new fee to watch the USDGC.

The ONLY thing I really like about UDisc is the in round navigation. It is by far the best tool I've used to find our way around a course you've never played before, which makes it valuable to DG road trippers.

Totally agree that this is the best aspect of the app. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you use the GPS/map combo without upgrading to Pro? You certainly used to be able to, and that's what I did until I became a PDGA member and got the complementary upgrade. Don't want you out there spending bucks for a feature if it's free!

From what I've seen UDisc will still have the free version that will give you course navigation and you can keep score as well, it just won't save your score over time. Also, I believe it was confirmed that your PDGA membership will still include UDisc Premium for free through at least 2022 and they're working to extend that partnership beyond 2023 as well so for most serious players the cost change won't really make a difference, unless the PDGA membership cost goes up as well.

So did I.
So now I'm paid up for the PDGA thru 2021 and thru 2022 for UDisc Pro.

Here's my follow up question for UDisc.........If they're planning to include UDisc Pro in PDGA memberships, do i get a $4.99 discount for 2022 since I renewed now?

$15 a year to be able to just tap the left and right side of my watch to keep score vs futzing with a paper and pencil which I'll break the lead off of or fall out of my bag halfway through the round contributing to the litter on course?

Signature series discs seem to be jumping up by a couple bucks every time they drop, so this hardly seems like it matters in the grand scheme of things.

Here's UDisc's statement about PDGA membership still including Udisc, from Reddit.

I read the same statement from Steve Hill on FB.

My interpretation of this is that the PDGA absorbed the $5 cost previously. While i'm hopeful they will absorb this additional cost(Or UDisc gives them a group rate), my guess is that there will be an additional cost.

I've never paid for Udisc (not current PDGA either) but I still use it for various things.

1. Measuring throws.
2. Mapping Hidden Ridge layouts.
3. The navigation feature at new courses.
