[Innova] The mythical Innova ROC

Let us know how your DX Roc3s fly after you've thrown them a few times. My experience with DX Roc3s is that if you're throwing putters 280, you're probably going to get some drift with a DX Roc3 unless you're hyzer flipping it. I've had champ Roc3s that were straight to fade with no turn from a flat rip, but I think the DX's generally have a bit of turn if you're getting them out over 300, which I'm sure you would (not to mention that it'll lose some fade after a few tree hits).

i used to turn my flat top dx rocs some full power but with the slight dome I think it'll work out better. i prefer to not throw mids full power if i don't have to. not many trees to hit around here! :p

I'm stoked to try them. i like the feel so much even the star one feels great.

will report back.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of doing a flat top Roc cycle? I prefer my KC/DX Rocs with a little dome. I want to hear the argument for a flat flat cycle. I'm not talking about Roc3s either.

I don't see an advantage for using strictly the flat tops unless you absolutely prefer the hand feel.

Flat Top DX and KC's never really achieved that "Perfect Beat Roc" stability for me.
They start out fast and OS and quickly turn into something that isn't overly Roc-like. They'll turn when given power and still will retain that late bite.

A DX/KC with a decent dome will keep fantastic HSS for the majority of its life whereas the flat tops just seem to lose it rapidly.

Yep, I was never a fan of the flat top Rocs for the same reason. They became unpredictable quick.

Many of my Rocs that had dome when new eventually flattened out with age. Not sure why. I didn't mind. I cycle stiff yellow pop top KC's right now and the oldest one in my bag is almost completely flat now.

Yep, I was commenting on this phenomenon just last page. My main Roc currently, which is beat into dead straight perfection has just the tiniest of domes now, and it was definitely a "drummer" Roc with a decent sized dome to begin with. That dome seems to settle right down after some tree love. It still doesn't feel exactly like the flat tops in the hand, but I prefer it honestly.

It happens. It's not just Rocs, a lot of DX discs will do that. I used to notice it in Gazelles a lot back in the day. It was never a "all the time" or even "most of the time" thing, but common enough.

Yup. Every time Ive talked myself in to running with the flat tops I realize I hate them after a decent break in. That's just me tho, nothing against anyone who does like them. They just don't break in like I feel a roc is supposed to.

I've seen it happen with premium blends too. The first release of RGL Pures were pretty domey. Sorting through boxes to sell some discs I came across those same Pures, and they're getting pretty close to being flat.

I "think" I've seen it happen to Champ Valks. I've at least put an old Champ Valk back in my bag and thought "damn, was this always this flat?" Not really conclusive evidence, but...

Pretty much all of them are not plus molds. Champ ranchos are the only standard production plus mold roc I believe.

Every KC Roc I've looked at in the last 3 years has had a really plussy rim. The DX Roc I'm holding in my hand looks exactly like a KC with dome, and also has the same exact plus rim.

R-pros too are production runs. Or were.

That's the current Rancho Roc. It is not a Plus mold, but the rim is decently slanted like Plus molds. I imagine that mold piece was shaved/worn down which is why everything is molding up like it is.

Update on DX Roc3s: I've put mine through a number of rounds now, and it's already seasoning in... in fact, my DX Roc3 has started to get flippy. It turns over too easily and goes right (RHBH), and is not consistent nor reliable. Lest you say it's operator headspace and timing (i.e. my form), my Metal Flake Champ Roc3 is consistent, the Star Roc3 was consistent on the range the other day. IMHO my DX Roc3 just wore in and became understable and flippy. Maybe it's just the one disc.

Also, my DX VRoc, which came at the same time as the DX Roc3, has not been used nearly as much (yet), but is holding up pretty well. It still flies very straight with some fade. I expect it'll lose some of that fade as it wears in, but the VTech should keep it going straight. I'll keep working with it and will let y'all know if it also starts getting flippy.

All I see are the slightly plus rimmed rancho rocs. I might pick up a new Rancho and try to get used to it.
Its a good thing that Rocs last forever for me. I'm still throwing some I stashed in 2011.

They do last a really long time even in DX. It's such a great disc, but I really hate slanted inner rims. I have a couple old ones from about the same time as yours, and they have a noticeably more vertical inner rim.

When I say plus mold what I mean is an inner rim that is slanted rather than vertical. All Roc3s have the kind of rim I am talking about.

I guess I'll just keep throwing Ghosts for now!

Yeah we're talking about the same thing. The difference in angle is pretty small but difference can be felt. I tried the roc3 for a short time but it didn't work for me.

Plus molds area staple of Innovas at this point. Either get used to it (aka get over it), pay a bunch for collectors, or switch brands.
