DFW disc golf

I'll be moving to the DFW area within a few weeks for my fiance's job relocation. I'm excited to become a part of the DFW DG scene and can't wait to start playing some new courses! The only courses I've played in the area are Lester Lorch, and I loved them.

I saw the info on the weekend mini's, but are there any leagues in the area or weekday meetups?

Thanks!

Almost every good course in D/FW has a weekly mini tournament, you can play for cash every night of the week if you don't mind driving. What city are you moving to? You don't need to know about all the weeklys, just the ones near you.

Just an FYI, I hate to say this, but I heard that the Tyler 54 is getting moved back again. Not exactly sure but rumors have it slated now around Sept. I will keep everyone informed as long as I hear anything.

JenB: Dogwood is definitely one of the hardest courses in Texas. Everyone should come play it now it is is fantastic shape, but it will test your will to finish. If you go look at some pro scores from past Piney Woods events, there are pros regularly in the mid and upper 70's and one I think was in the 80's!

All,

I will be traveling to D/FW on Sunday, arriving approx. noon. I am interested in playing some golf, and I would like to find the most challenging courses in the area. Can anyone give me some ideas? I would be willing to drive around an hour. Thanks!

Will

Lester Lorch in Cedar Hill will give you the most bang for your buck. 36 holes and it is a little out of the way so it will not be very crowded, you will also have good shade on most of the course so you don't die playing in the hottest part of the day.

Towne Lake in McKinney is a personal favorite but all the baskets are in the short pin so it isn't as challenging as it normally would be. Bonus* pitch and putt Alex Clark is a mile away.

Z-Boaz & the Veterans are very challenging on the FW side but they can get very busy and Veterans is the hottest course ever.

Turner is a great course with the most elevation you can find in the area, personally I'd rather not walk up and down hills when it is 100 deg out.

Harry Myers is another personal favorite but it can get hot and a little repedetive on the back 9.

Definitely swing by Turner Park in Grand Prairie (Great course, well maintained, good variety, good signage)

Also I am a big fan of Bicentennial in Crowley (21 holes, nice park, less crowded than Z-Boaz)

There is always Lester Lorch (Cedar Hill) 36 Holes of challenging fun that includes H2O, tiny fairways and thick brush, but a very gun 2 rounds if you have the time. I also heard they put in a 3rd in the area, I moved about a year ago and it wasn't in then, but I hear it's nice. I think it is called Crossroads of Life DGC.

I'm not sure about Crowley.

Very hot course.
Some steep (but short) hills to climb. My opinion is the holes don't warrent the effert.
Unless things have changed it is up to the local golfers to maintain most of the fairways so it can get overgrown. If you decide on this corse try to contact someone who has played recently.

I'll agree it is a good course but I wouldn't send someone to it in the summertime with all the other good courses in the area.

Crowley can be really weird and hard to navigate if you aren't with someone who's played there, and yes it is a pretty hot course.

Veterans actually has the tournament both Sat and Sun this weekend, so if you play it you might wanna wait till 6 or so.

I recommend Turner also since its in the middle of the metroplex and is an awesome course.

What do you know, I actually played Crowley this morning. It has been recently mowed and they had a couple of parks guys picking up trash. It's also no longer a 20 hole course since #6 has been removed. Play the longs for a challenge or the shorts for a quick round.

forgot about the Fling at Veterans. I'd avoid the Fort Worty side, it is possible that with the event both days at the Vet, the near by courses will have the people who couldn't get a round in at the Vet playing.

Z-Boaz being the most likely place people would go.

I'd say go to Turner in Grand Prairie, only played it once but it was one of the most fun (if not the most) I have played in D/FW.

I'll be at Lewisville Lake on Saturday morning and Bear Creek on Sunday morning.

Right now I'm leaning towards playing both Lorch courses on Sunday and Turner either Monday or Tuesday evening. Are there any doubles/triples style events in the area on Tuesday?

I've played Crowley recently and disagree with the comments about the Crowley heat. IMO, It is as or more treed than Veterans (equal or more shade) and offers more shot variety. It offers elevation changes, technical shots, and water hazards. Also, there are less frolf punks and friendly locals to guide you. It can get confusing on holes 6,7, and 8 but so can Veterans on 4,5,6, and 7 for a visitor.

Check out my review of Turner - it can be a little confusing for someone to navigate without knowing how to get around. Locals are super friendly, as we all are here in God's country - TX. :p

I prefer Bicentennial in Crowley over the other courses on the Ft Worth side. ZBoaz and the Vet are almost always crowded. Crowley is an underrated course, but I guess that is what I like most about it...keeps a lot of people away from it. From the long tees, it has some of the most challenging disc golf holes around.
