First attempt at dying...

Oracal 651 Intermediate Cal

It's sign vinyl, and works much, much better than contact paper!

oh, and here's some fun stuff to look at...

Thos are fantastic....is the vinal pretty expensive and how easy was it to take off afterwards?

The vinyl is actually about the same price as contact paper if you buy it from a sign supply shop. I usually get $5 at a time, and it's like 18' x 22" or something. If you use it correctly, it WILL NOT bleed!

To take it off, you just run hot water on the disc for 30 seconds or so in the sink, the vinyl will come right off no problem.

Can you change the complete color of your Disc I have a gray ontario roc and I don't want to lose it because of its color any suggestions?

I love the globe disc, but I think it would really look cool on a blue champion disc.

There is no way to make a dark disc any lighter. If the disc is gray, you could dye it blue, red, green, whatever colour you want, but it won't be any brighter than the gray that it is now.

Wow.. there is some really impressive work in this thread. Very cool stuff.

A question for Gwillum. how long does it usually take you to cut out the design on the vinyl before attaching to the disc?

Also, I know the water has to be hot when you mix the rit dye in it, but does it need to be hot for the dye to bond to the disc, or does cold rye dye work just as well?
How long do you leave the disc in the dye for?

At first it was taking me three hours or more, as I've had more practice, that time has dropped a lot. The less complex designs take me 30 minutes or so, the complex ones can take me up to three hours still.

The dye does not have to be hot to bond with the plastic, however it works MUCH faster to use hot dye. With cold dye, it takes two or three days to get your colors dark and full, with hot dye, this can be achieved in 10 minutes or less.

what about the plastic? does that matter? i have a crappy turbo putter that i want to try it on but it feels rubbery, will the hot water affect that at all? also where would be the best place to buy the supplies? (contact paper, rit dye, etc.), and does the dye come in different collors? i think thats all the questions i have for now.

Lower grade plastics do not dye well. The candy plastics (Z, Champion, etc) are the best for dying. Next is the mid grades, which usually work fine (Star, ESP, Elite X, etc). The lower grade plastics do not dye well, or at all, these include the DX style plastics. The turbo putter would most likely be a very poor candidate for dying.

As I stated earlier, I would suggest against contact paper. It does not work very well at all. But if you're really just wanting to give it a try, contact paper will give results. You can buy contact paper, rit dye, x-acto knives, and acetone at most Wal-Mart/Target style stores. Also, craft/fabric stores usually have all of those things. As for colors, RIT dye comes in dozens of colours.

I have never even thought about dyeing my discs, but I am now...thanks for this thread!

Its a great way to really stand out on the course and make your disc one of a kind.

The disc with the KFC logo is my putter. People get a real kick out of it when they see it. I get lots of questions about it. I think of the funniest things that ever happened, was that I was playing in a tournament, and I threw my "Harley-Davidson" disc on my drive. As we walked up to our disc, a guy saw my disc , and asked if that was my sponsor.

Is it necessary to remove the stamp on a disc prior to dying it? Or is it ok to dye the disc with the stamp still on it?
