Has anyone else taken a look at the updated world rankings according to the PDGA and wondered how the hell they come up with this shiz? How is Steve Brinster #3 and Anton #4? I know Brinster had a good showing at the USDGC but come on! Ulibarri was #2 at Worlds and #5 at the USDGC yet he dropped to #9. How the hell is Cale not even in the top 20?!?

I'm thinking that the system needs an overhaul. It may seem trivial to us, but these guys have sponsorship bonuses tied to these rankings. What are your feelings?

I'd guess many top players pad their ratings by having high scoring rounds at their local tournaments, local courses, and lack of competition. If they blow the next pro player away by 9 strokes, they have a 1050+ rated round easily. Take a look at the Player Rating Statistics on the PDGA page and see what tourneys they've played in and how many times they finished on top in a weak event, or just being in the top 10 in a National Tour can give you high ratings.

As Superberry eluded to, some tournaments are left out of the World Rankings. Specifically, all C-Tier events, which often produce pretty wack ratings.

There is a pretty thorough explanation of the formula used to establish the World Rank, you should go read it, Dstearns. I'm not saying that I disagree with you what-so-ever, but it might give you some insights into the "why" and "how" factors.

Cheers

I did, and I understand it. However, I think the system is clearly out of whack. There are a couple names on there that I wouldn't even classify in the top 30. But then, who am I to judge.

I don't follow this closely, but I didn't see Avery Jenkins in even the top 20 anymore...wasn't he #1 last year......any info on the downward spirial.....is he addicted to Snyders of Hanover Buff Wing Pretzel's or something......Val still rep'd the fam though....she is going to make some baby very happy someday.....

Fascinating. I never knew anyone even cared about the rankings. Always struck me as being so close to player ratings as to be superfluous.

How many ways do we have to crown the best? World Champion? U.S. Champion? National Tour Winner? Highest rated player? Highest ranked player? Points leader? Money Leader?

(Most of which are available in any of about 27 divisions, but that's another gripe entirely).

For those who care, though, it seems to me that any formula you use to rank players will have at least some results that strike at least some viewers as skewed.
