I began playing in the mid-1990s while growing up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, running around Buchmiller and Roland Parks with a cobra and piranha. I started playing more seriously (i.e., with a bag) just before moving to Pittsburgh in 2009. I appreciate disc golf courses that emphasize the art of shot-making and reward you with disc flight paths about which you can daydream. Before moving to Penn State in 2015, I played most of my disc golf at nearby Schenley Park, but I considered Deer Lakes my true "home course."
Based on some combined metric* of challenge, fun, aesthetics, and design, here is my ordinal ranking of the top 10+ of the courses I have played:
1) Deer Lakes Park
2) Maple Hill DGC
3) Seven Springs Mountain Resort
4) Camp Sankanac
5) Moraine State Park
6) T2-The Turkeynator
7) Roland Park
8) Orange Crush
9) Carousel Park
10) Slippery Rock University (9 holes)
11) Buchmiller Park
12) Two-Mile Run Extension (9 holes)
13) Seth Burton Memorial
14) Turkey Lake Park
15) Knob Hill Park
* These are my "selfish" rankings. For ratings based on what I think is best more generally for the entire population of disc golfers, see my DGCR ratings. For example, I wouldn't care selfishly if a course only had my level tees (blue) but would rate it higher in my DGCR ratings if it has tees for multiple player levels.
Hole 15 at Seven Springs in September. I don't know if you can see the disc traveling toward the basket, but I parked it to 15' for eagle on that shot.
Hey Vince, looking to play Deer Lakes during my travels coming from the northeast either 11/14 sat afternoon or 11/15 sun AM. if you are interested in guiding me thru this gem let me know. Thanks
