Not worth the drive. drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Senic

Cons:

Not maintained, too much water for an amatuer.

Other Thoughts:

Bring all of your old discs that you don;t want any more, and your swear jar, for all the water holes. One of the walks, ( from 15 to 16 I think ) was literally a 1/2 mile. Two of the baskets are just gone right now. The wife and I just felt beat up after playing, ( I'm 850 rated if that helps for context ) I would wait until someone takes on the project of revamping this course.

Put the Wood in Windwood

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Grippy, lengthy concrete teepads. Informative tee signs. Benches. Good length and difficulty progression until 19 (see cons).Good variety of moderate to tightly wooded shots. Precarious pin positions near water's edge and/or drop off. Tree lines and canopies force precise shot shapes. Well used ravine crossings.

Cons:

Only par 4 is a soft one (19).Last 3 holes are nearly wide open and much lower quality than the rest of the course.Holes 13 and beyond unplayable after rain.

Other Thoughts:

A course that was mostly an afterthought in the late 2010's has been revitalized the last few years. Its strengths lie in excellent use of woods, water, and ravines along the church's perimeter to create a good variety of moderately to very wooded shots.

Jesus plays here 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Windwood is one of the best, if not the best, church courses I have ever played. The receptionist was very welcoming and friendly, the pads were paved, the signs were informative (even if the distances were not very accurate).

There are 21 holes on this course, and they're not aalllll quality, but there is a lot of variety, and a lot of good use of the land available. Some holes play tightly through the woods, some play between tree patches, and some are open bombers. The course starts off by the entrance, goes on one side of the creek, then up the other side, then around again. You eventually go around the property and then the sports field.

This course seems.. somewhat taken care of? I mean it wasn't bad at all except maybe a couple of the more wooded holes. They obviously mow all the fields and fairways the course plays around. The retention pond is obviously going to be unmowed, and wet after rain, as will the ditch that goes along one side of the property.

The baskets are old but still good condition Mach V's, the Toyota Camry of targets- not flashy, but reliable, long-lasting, and affordable.

Cons:

Just like every Houston course, it's flat. I mean, they work with some elevation in the retention ditch by just having you throw across it. And putting baskets on banks of the creeks and stuff.

The distances on the tee's are pretty off. I even couldn't believe two's basket was truly the basket, because it was definitely close enough to make in one shot.

The finishing of the holes are meh, as you play around the sport field and back to the parking lot. I mean, it's kinda nice to have some wide open holes, but makes a little bit of a hazard.

Other Thoughts:

I really love this course. It's old, but doesn't have that "vintage" course feel in the design. Could use some updates though. But as church courses go, this one is probably the one Jesus plays on his off days.

Windwood Presbyterian Church Is Long And Challenging! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 25, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

I decided to drop in and play Windwood on a whim. I had heard from other players that it was closed. There were some players milling about around hole 8 so I asked them about navigating the course? Any problems? No, it's pretty easy to follow said they. They didn't think to mention the bridge over the creek being washed out. Thanks a bunch, guys. I wasted a lot of time and energy here before finally figuring where holes 5-6-7 were.

Windwood is long. It's grueling both mentally and physically. If you're a player who craves a challenge, then this is the course for you. Of the 15 Houston area courses I've played so far, Windwood has proved to be the toughest. The length wears you down. The heat wears you down. There are no holes here to relax and catch your breath on. The only short holes all play along the creek which has had it's banks greatly affected by the recent floods. A previous reviewer described the course as intimidating and I think that's pretty accurate. Not a course for everyone.

It' was a little unnerving to me to see a snake warning sign on every hole and then walk 550' through deep grass on many holes.

The amenities are good with nice concrete tee pads, excellent signs with map and sponsors and nice baskets. There were benches, bag holders and garbage cans on most holes.

I think the flooding has left the course looking dingy. Everything here has probably looked better in the pre-flood days. The walk through the rentention pond had standing water. The course was badly in need of mowing from 13-19.

Good idea building the ladders over the outfield fence on # 19. You know players are going to throw their discs over that fence and it's a smart play providing a way for them to retrieve them.

Cons:

Others have dismissed the various cons as being nit-picky or minor, however, I see them as some serious flaws. The general poor conditions of the course can be blamed on he flooding. Much of Houston has this same after-flood look.

The soggy retention pond seems to always be an issue.

The overgrown fairways on the back 9? Back 10? Back 10 1/2? Always seem to be an issue.

IMO there were a lot of "meh" holes here that I didn't care for. # 12 with it's long grass. # 13 playing 550' along a dried up canal or is this a dried up bayou? 20 and 21 both being open, windy and boring.

I don't know how the holes along the creek played before and how much the flooding had impacted them but reviewers have commented that you are going to have to go into the creek to rescue discs. I wasn't going into that Creek today. Don't want to be another victim.

Other Thoughts:

I think this course might benefit by having 18 good holes and eliminating 3 of the "meh" holes. I'm not sure if this is a possibility given the enermous size of the church and school buildings that you are navigating around.

After playing here, I was able to play Zube Park up in Hockley and found it to be an all together different and most pleasant experience. If I lived around here, Zube and Texas Army Trail would be getting my play.

Windwood Presbyterian 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

The front desk is very welcoming. They offer map/scorecard and pencils to keep your score. Definitely take a map as the course would be difficult to follow without it. The basket and teepads are in great shape (except 14's teepad). The teesigns are big and very informative showing where the patches of trees and other obstacles are. This course will make you utilize all shots in your bag. There are hyzers, anhyzers and straight shots within the course. The course makes good use of the creek and drainage ditch as well. Were there are fences there are big ladders for you to use to retrieve your disc.

Cons:

Hole 4/11 (throwing over the drainage ditch) was way over grown. The grass was waist high and tough to get through. The bridge leading to hole 5 was missing and the water was too high for me to cross. I had to walk back to number 8 and pick and play from there. Hole 13?, The long hole throwing along side a small creek with thick brush on the right was a terrible hole. It was 500+ in a narrow fairway that was sloped toward the creek. You could not see the basket so it was a throw and up shot just in a field to be near the basket. The trees surrounding the basket were completely covered in poison ivy.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a fun course I would want to play when it was in better condition. The grass and drainage ditch were way over grown. Also, the bridge was missing on 5 which eliminated a few of the risk/reward shots I could have thrown. This is a long challenging course that requires you to put together multiple quality shots to shoot a good score.

Its wooded alright 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-nice challenge overall
-One of only a few courses on the NW side
-Plenty of parking
-Friendly staff upon check-in. They seem to like having DG'ers out there. Make sure to do so before 5 on the weekdays, after 5 just play.
-Some cool shots for Houston. Decent Elevation changes around creek.
-Best marked Practice Basket in town.

Cons:

-Bridge is washed out past hole 4. You will have to cross near the drainage pipe.
-Its hard to see a lot of the pins now in Summer from the TeeBox.
-Overgrowth on holes 5 -8
-Lots of death putts
-easy to lose discs here. Almost did a few times in the trees alone, not to mention the creek.
-Hole 2. That hole sucks
Pigs on 13. Smells worse than a port-a-john

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice course overall. Somewhat difficult which is nice as a challenge but not for beginners.

I played this course a bunch in 2011, 2012 and just went back for the first time in a while yesterday. I would say it was a better course before. The bridge is gone cutting off the other side of the creek. Overgrowth makes life difficult in hitting gaps and finding discs. Its a fun track but I wont rush back when there is NCC or Spring Valley somewhat nearby.

Cons:

Not kept up very well. There were a few times when i landed in good spots in the fairways, but the grass was so long i had to search for my disc for a while.

Best Church Property course yet 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 4, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cement Tee pads
PDGA approved baskets (A lot of private church courses have home made baskets)
Tee signs, while some were not perfect, all where there and readable.
Very wide arraignment of holes taking everyone out of your bag.

Cons:

Some of the holes are rough in that they are not mowed very often or at all.
A few holes are very close to the creek, with recent rains, these were dangerous holes to play.
Along with the creek being a little high and muddy, there was a lot of water on several of the holes, my shoes did get soaked by the end of the round.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course and fun to play.

From short technical holes, to long power shots, this course has a little of everything.

First off, RESPECT the fact that this is a private course that is free to play, check in with the office if you are playing on a week day before 5pm, they only want to know who is on the course for security reasons (they are a school too)

2nd, do not bring Beer or other substances not acceptable to a church. It is a simple request of the church, if you have a problem with it, play one of the many other courses in the area.
Hole 1 tees off near the street and is your typical easy simi wide open shot.
Hole 2 is a dogleg right, it is the opening before the ditch, don't overthrow, it is not an easy comeback.
Hole 3 is a nice long turnover. You hyzer out, your in a ditch that does hold water if it has been raining.
Hole 4 is a longer shot across the drainage pond, which today had a lot of water in it.
Hole 5 you need to cross the creek and the hole is going back towards the main street. Risky shot as there is a ditch behind and the creek to the left of the basket.
These back 3 holes have not been mowed this year and the grass is pretty tall.
Hole 6 is another shot like 5, just longer.
Hole 7 has a lot of risk rewards, the basket is across the creek, short shots will be in the creek, but there is some space to land not in the actual creek.
Holes 8 and 9 are risky with the creek being high. Both are hyzer shots.
Hole 10 is a nice tunnel shot, don't hyzer out or you are in the creek.
Hole 11 is a long open shot across the drainage pond ditch with the basket back up into the trees.
Hole 12 is a long hole with a couple of options on how to approach the basket.
Hole 13 is a long hole down the drainage creek with the basket up past the tree line. There was water in the ditch today and I had to wade to get my shot that hyzered out on the other side of the ditch.
Hole 14 is shorter than the sign says, nice little anhyzer.
Hole 15 is another anhyzer shot, although you can throw over the top for a hyzer.
Hole 16 is a long anyhyzer shot or layup your hyzer for an easy 3
Hole 17 is a true risk reward shot, if you think you can throw 350, go for it, hyzer over the pond. If you are a chicken like me, lay it up past the pine trees to get your easy 3
Hole 18 is a longer defined fairway shot with areas of rough to stay out of
Hole 19 is either a big hyzer over the baseball field, or anhyzer around it.
Hole 20 is a space filler, simple 240ft hole with not a single obstacle in the way. Worst hole on the course.
Hole 21 is also wide open, but 366ft towards the main office building with a little drainage ditch in front of the basket. (only spot with no water ironically today as I was in the ditch for an easy bird)

First Course for me 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 16, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Front desk has a map/scoreboard for personal use
-Practice/Putting basket on hole 1 with distance markers
-Easy to navigate
-Concrete tee pads
-Ladders to get over fences

Cons:

-Yes, there was a pig farm across the ditch, but it shouldn't bother you too much
-Hole 13 is right on the back edge of the pig farm which has a ditch in the middle. It's very narrow and if your disc does land in the ditch it's very overgrown and its quite swampy in the middle

Other Thoughts:

It's a great course that starts easy, get's pretty technical quickly, but then eases up with wide open shots at the end. It appears that a lot of planning and effort was gone into designing the course. I understood the course was a little difficult for beginners, but I went anyways and still had a great time; nothing that can't be managed. If you're looking for a great course in the area this is definitely worth checking out.

A must visit course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 7, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I'll start from the beginning:
- Practice basket is right up front with distance markers (footstones), a bench, bag pole and instructions for a fun little putting game.
- There is a map of the entire course before Tee1
- First Tee and Pin is in plain sight.
- Holes 2-10 are gently nestled throughout the woods. Each requiring a different strategy but not forcing you to stay with a single throwing style.
- A creek winds along the first half of the course. Brand new, well designed and well built bridges were installed this week.
- Professionally built benches and great bag-poles abound.
- Hole sign on every tee.
- Trash cans spread throughout.
- 11-21 open up to wider fairways and add some distance, while each hole remains different than all the rest.
- The local Boy Scouts and designer/workers have put a lot of work into this course with the benches, bag-poles, bridges, maps, tree signs, and fence ladders (in case you throw it over a fence they've provided ladders for a safe traverse)
- Whoever manicures the grass will sometimes cut the grass at different heights as well! OB has tall grass, thicker grass on the sides of the fairway, and short grass on the fairway. (This isn't always the case but it is a very nice perk when it does happen) And just shows how much they care for the course.

Cons:

The church has a pig-farmer neighbor behind the campus across a drainage gulley. So when the wind blows toward the church the back 2 holes kind of smell bad. I don't mind it though.
You can tell when funding is a little tight, sometimes it will go 3 or so weeks without being mowed.
If there is a hard rain 1 or 2 days before you go expect a few holes to have some water on them. So #4 and #11 fly over a retention area, but don't fret, there are stepping stones to get you across with dry feet.

Other Thoughts:

The Pros FAR out-weight the cons on this course. This is a must visit for any Disc Golf player. Even if you only play it once, you gotta check it out!

2011 summer there was a harsh drought for this area. Trees were dying everywhere, including here. They've painstaking removed the dead trees and debris. And early this spring (2013) they planted dozens of new trees to replace them.

Pictures need to be updated for this course, a lot of care and improvement has happened in the last year.

Pros:

great landscape. Indeed the grass is cut and the course is well kept. All pads are cement. This course really long holes as well as the occasional shorties. There is a creek that runs through the course(4-10). There are 10 foot drop offs around these holes. Heavily wooded also where a shot off the fairway could make or break your par attempt. The creek is not very wide, but is deeper than waste high in some areas. Definitely lost a disc in the creek. Went in after it and was unsuccessful in finding it, but pulled up another disc. Nothing dampens your spirits more than losing your disc and just when you think you have found yours, you pull up another disc!!!

Cons:

no alcohol allowed on course because its on church/school grounds. I happened to go on the windest day which stunk. If you happen to throw your disc in the woods, there were a lot pricker bushes. My legs came out of that course with some major scrapes. I really disliked the smell around holes 11-15 because you shooting next to a crapy looking farm/junkyard or something.

Other Thoughts:

Really enjoyed the course. Holes 19-21 were very open and even managed a few birds. There are some holes that have tall grass and some standing water in random areas. I loved the idea that if you threw your shot over the fence the local boy scouts made ladders to get over safer.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 10, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-This is one of the most scenic courses in Houston as it goes through a forest and over ponds you almost forget you are on a church at time.
-The course is very well maintained. The grass is mowed weekly and it is quite apparent that the people who maintain the course really care about the dignity of the course.
-Almost no shots off the tee are the same. At this course there are chances for aces #4, dog leg lefts, long 500+ holes at #13, and short technical shots that if played incorrectly can end up with a wet disc.
-Every hole except #14 has long concrete tee pads. They also have installed benches and bag posts at each hole.
-The course is easy to navigate. The tee signs are top of the notch
-There is a bit of elevation change on some holes, which is something you will not see in Houston very often
-The baskets are very new and just had a few more chains added to catch putts better

Best holes: #4, #11, #20

Cons:

Cons on this course are really just small nit-picky things.

-This is quite an intimidating course and could discourage beginners. The brush is ruthless and an errant shot can mean looking for your disc for quite a while.
- A few of the holes go over a retention pond which at times could mean that it is flooded after a good rain, the creek that a few holes play around can also get really high and swallows discs like no one's business.
-A few of the holes have a bad design. #2 is a 250' drive and then a 90 degree dog leg left and about another 100' to the hole. And hole #13 is a 450' narrow shot with the basket perched to the left.

Worst holes: #2, #13

Other Thoughts:

This is the destination course in Houston. It may be the second best course if not the best (behind Texas Army Trail) within Houston city limits. The combination of different shots and challenge factor makes this course one that has to be played.

It also is a free course but dropping a few bucks at the donation box on Hole #21 should be worth the experience of playing here.

Variety of open drives and tight wooded controlled sections.
Terrain elevation changes

Cons:

Mosquitos due to being near creek
If you don't have a floating disc you will end up having to get in the creek.

Other Thoughts:

I have NO idea why people complain about losing discs in the creek, unless they have no concept about buying a floating disc. I use my wonderful Innova Dragon on holes 4-10 and never have lost a disc since I started using it. The creek poses a good challenge for control and with the floating disc you won't lose it. If you use a regular disc be prepared to get wet unless you have perfect control.

Fun times with MidnightBiker 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

+A good mix of tight woody holes and open bombs.
+Good signage on most of the holes with good spacious teepads
+man made elevation worked into some of the holes
+Use of the creek makes you decide between going for it, or laying up safe.
+Good drainage for a Houston course, most of it was dry save for a few areas that are meant to come up when rain is heavy.
+Baseball field and property fences used for OB makes otherwise boring holes into more technical ones.

Cons:

-Area around 16-18 seemed neglected, with lots of fallen branches everywhere.
-One or two of the later holes seemed like filler holes, just to get you from the previous hole to the next one.

Other Thoughts:

After playing several other courses that were waterlogged, Windwood stood out just on its dryness, in a not easy to dry place.
The front holes are mostly in the woods and along the creek, calling for more definite lines and technical shots, as well as judicious selection of landing zones as you lay up to the pin, so that you stay out of the water.
The back holes open up and let you air out your discs while keeping you restricted to specific lines.
Thanks to Midnightbiker for showing me around!

21 Holes of great play can be found here. From a straight-ahead shot on hole 1 to twists and turns through the woods around the church with an excellent mini ravine up-throw on hole 7 across the creek. Every hole on this course is a challenge in itself. Personally, I loved the variety of holes here. Throws on holes 4 and 11 across the retention pond And two throws across ponds on 14 and 17. The holes are not overly long here, but they don't need to be. I parred two just trying to keep my discs out of jeopardy, especially on holes 4 through 11 in the woods by the creek and again on holes 14 and 17, If you are a technical player, this is your course!

Cons:

Too many chances to lose a disc. Found the footing treacherous on some of the climbs up and down around the creek and retention pond, Hole 13 is a straightaway. If you cannot throw straight down a narrow embankment, your disc goes in a watery-filled ditch. No signs on holes 12 through 16, just posts and tees.

Other Thoughts:

This is another beautiful course!! Great map near the first t-pad shows the entire course, pads, flight paths and distances. Great use of shots here. Some longer holes, a few shorter one, all mixed in very well. There is a big creek that comes into play on a few holes. An errant shot or unlucky kick off a tree will result in a wet or lost disc, as there are some deep holes in the creek and it was super dirty the day I played. The course flows really well, and all the locals were super friendly and helpful navigating. New signs on the front 9 were excellent!! Great picture of the hole, flight path and distance to the basket. Although this course is only a year or so old, its beat in rather well. Its a heavily played course and it shows. I liked the how the holes along the creek required a good bit of techincal and accurate shots, and there are some great risk/reward holes as well. The back nine open up a little more for those that have a big arm and can bomb shots. Great use of the land and terrain makes this a great course to play. Although I didn't see any trash cans along the course, it was very clean and I noticed very little trash scattered about, which was nice to see. Maybe it being on church grounds helps

Cons:

No benches or trash cans. Benches would be a nice addition as lots of people and families play this course and there were quite a few holes we had to wait on. Having a place to sit and rest would be nice. I realize this is a newer course and is a constant work in progress, so I would imagine benches will be in place in the future. The only other drawback for me were all shots seemed to be rather straight or hyzer shots, no anny shots at all for a RHBH player, but its not really that big of deal.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the best courses in Houston. I like the mix of the wooded/creek holes and the wide open holes. The last 3 holes seemed to be added to avoid a long walk from 18 to the parking lot. Its always great to see families playing the game of disc golf, husbands, wives and their little kids were all over the course when I played, and this can only help the sport grow and possibly groom a future Pro player!! Overall this an excellent course that will definitely help you improve your game. I would recommend this course to anyone, and I found it worth the 1 hour drive to play. A must play course, in my opinion.
