Better Then Nothing... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 23, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I appreciate the effort that it takes to get a course built, so I want to thank the folks that accomplished this. That being said, this is in no way, shape, or form a 3+ rated course.

The baskets are simple single-chain models, but they catch fine. The tee signs give basic hole number, distance, and par.

There are embedded timbers marking the front of the teepads, with the pads themselves being scuffed out spots on the ground.

The first two holes play across the lush green lawn area next to the parking lot, while the remaining holes play in an area along the river. There is a short "bluff" that is used for elevation on holes 7 and 9, otherwise things are pretty flat.

If you approach this as a par 2 pitch and putt course you'll be in the correct frame of mind for playing it.

Cons:

The course is built into a small area and is incredibly short. All but two of the holes are less than 180 feet, with three in the 120 foot range. I've played short courses like this that were interesting because trees were utilized to force you to shape lines, but there are no trees on this course so everything is an open shot..

Holes 3 - 9 play in a rough area that is made up of prickly plants, little cactus, some dumped material, and brush piles. Although you are playing next to the river there is nothing pleasant about this part of the course. It is just dirty and gritty.

There is a brush pile in front of the Hole 5 tee pad, and another directly in front of the Hole 5 basket. They add a bit of challenge but it just seems random that they are there.

Other Thoughts:

If you are in the area, by all means bag this course. You can play it in about 20 minutes the first time, and about 15 minutes after that. But it isn't worth a special trip.

Fun if you know what to expect 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This course mixes it up pretty well even though all the holes are pretty short (longest is 230 ft but plays seriously uphill). Good mix of open and guarded baskets that challenges players to make precise shots.

It's pretty quick to play so you could get in multiple rounds if you want.

Lots of good ace runs and practice on approach shots on most of the holes. I brought my new putter and threw it for drives on most of the holes.

Hole 7 is one of my new favorite holes I've ever played. The shot is a RHBH or LHFH throw and it goes around 200 feet and then up a 20-25 foot cliff and then another 50-75 feet with a tree guarding the left side. For players that can't throw 300 feet, I would suggest throwing back towards the basket on hole 5 and then going up the cliff from there.

There's a guest book at the start of the course, which is a nice touch. Also there are course maps and information which were really helpful.

It's really the only course in the area, so if you're near and looking to play a round, this is it.

Cons:

Course seems to be made for beginners except a couple of holes. I could see it being tough if you can't throw at least 100-150 relatively straight. As a 900ish rated player playing with a group of 700-900 rated players, we had a good time. I could see a beginner really struggling to stay out of the thick brush and making it up the cliff on hole 7.

Don't forget your bug spray! We knew this ahead of time, but if you showed up without it, you'd be better off running into town and picking some up before playing.

The brush is very thick and there are piles of sticks throughout the course. You'll definitely want a spotter on holes 5 & 7 and it probably wouldn't hurt to have one on 4 & 6 either.

For beginners it could be tricky to get across the ravine on hole 9 and it would be really tough to get a disc out of there.

Don't come to this course looking to be unleash your long throws. It's pretty short and you probably won't need your distance drivers (for drives I threw 6 putter shots, a roc(hole 4), a thunderbird (hole 7), and a firebird(hole 5)).

Other Thoughts:

The street address isn't exactly right. My map took me one too many streets down. The parking lot of the course is just west of the dog park area and you start on the north west side of the parking lot. It's the closest turn on the north side of the road to the bridge going into/out of the east side of town.

1, 2, 3, 6, 8 and 9 are good for ace runs or practice with up shots. 4 will is a little longer of an up shot with some danger on either side. 5 is a little tricky and tucked right behind a pile of sticks after 200+ feet with lots of danger and probably a RHFH/LHBH throw. 7 is the iconic hole on the course and one of my new favorites, also is definitely a RHBH/LHFH.

The river was higher than normal when we played and it didn't come into play hardly at all. There was a ditch with some water on the right side of holes 4 and 5 and then in the fairway of 7 that might come into play, but there's a little bridge across behind 5 and the water level is ankle high.

I wouldn't recommend playing it alone because it's really nice to have a spotter even for an experienced player.

All in all, I wouldn't say this is a course you need to go out of your way to play, partially because it's a long way out of your way and a good, not great course. But if you're in the area and looking for a fun course, this is definitely worth your time. I would recommend it (probably play it multiple times) to anyone who happens to be in the area and likes disc golf.

The Shack 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Full disclosure: I am the designer. I think this is a very good short course. It takes advantage of the features of the land. It plays at a leisurely one hour and could be played in less than 45 minutes if you were in a bit of hurry (say over your lunch break).

Cons:

It's short. Possibly the fact that it is right along the river although some may like this.

Other Thoughts:

It is the first course we've designed and that was approved by the city. We plan to put in several more courses between the river and the walking path.
