9/18 Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fun course with some nice touches. This course has nine tee pads with 18 baskets. The designers did a nice job of having players make different shots from the same tee pad to different baskets. It is not the same shot only thrown further. The tee pads are nice and big. Plenty of room for run up. There are some great rock formations on the first two holes. There is some decent elevation where you throw down on two holes and up on two holes. There was some time and effort put into the design.
The signage is very nice and the course flows fairly well from hole to hole. The course makes good use of what trees there are on the course. For a course with only 9 tee pads it is well worth a second and third visit.

Cons:

There is some water in the park and it would have been great to see a few holes around the large pond that is in the park.

Interesting Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 28, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Interesting 9 tee/18 basket course in a rural county park outside of Milwaukee, WI. I don't know if I've ever played a setup like this - each tee is signed with two baskets apiece to be played as a different hole (for example: holes 1 and 10 play from the same tee, but the baskets are located in different spots), which makes for some interesting golf to be packed into a relatively small area.

The basics are all done very well - well-mounted Mach III's in superb condition, informative tee signage, and as of November of 2017, new concrete tees have been poured; they are excellent and quite spacious. Cool little bag holders at each tee, too.

I was a little skeptical of the 2 baskets per tee setup, but once you got back into the more woodsy part of the course, it used elevation and trees quite well to lay out holes you had to execute different shots for, and thus, left you feeling like you weren't simply playing a longer or shorter version of the exact same hole a second time when you cycled through the tees again. Also, a small touch, but one I appreciated: on your first run through the 9 tees, the course designers did a good job alternating if you were playing the longer or shorter basket - you aren't playing all the shorter holes 1-9 and all the longer holes 10-18.

Free to play (there is a donation box if you feel compelled to donate), and being so out of the way, I can't imagine it ever being too crowded.

Cons:

No major cons, but some nits to pick here:

The 9 tee / 18 basket setup was interesting, and a nice way to pack 18 holes of disc golf into a 9 hole space, but the setup does have its inherent limitations. As I mentioned in the pros, the course designer utilized some creativity to make the second basket per tee feel like a different hole most of the time, but there were a few wide open holes early in the layout that it did just feel like different length versions of the same hole the second time you played through.

Course did feel significantly RHBH heavy overall - I can really only remember one tee that clearly favored an RHFH shot, most clearly favored RHBH. It wasn't a major problem, but a little more balance would have been nice.

There also was a small pond on site near the last few tees too - my guess is that it probably wasn't viable to integrate into the course due to the other uses of the park, but you could have made a set of sweet water carry holes over it, and I left feeling like that was a missed opportunity.

Other Thoughts:

Carlin Weld is a course I'm glad I got to play - it's an interesting setup, it's something different, and the just felt elegant - the course maintenance was on point, and you had some cool features like an elevated basket on a rock mound (hole 1) and the steps going down the hill of 3/12 were a nice touch.

I won't put this in the "cons" section, because I really have nobody to blame but myself for this, but be sure to get a look at the course map before you set out, and pay attention to the tee signs, because that's the only "next tee" indication you're going to get. If you just try to wing the navigation on your own like I did the first time through, there are a few spots that it's not at all difficult to get lost or sidetracked to the wrong tee.

C/W has a few walking trails on site, but nothing that you should have to worry about unless you uncork a completely errant shot. One thing to consider: Those first couple of open holes are surrounded by long prairie grass with prickly branches interspersed throughout it - I had a tough time finding my disc in it following a bad shot in November after it had all kind of gotten flattened by the weather - I would NOT want to have to sift through that stuff looking for a disc in the summer!

This course is a little out there in the boonies, so I don't know how often I'll be able to play it, but this is a fine little course to make a stop at and play if you find yourself around the area, or if you want to spend some time here, you could do far worse than to play each set of tees four times (which I did) & each basket twice. You have to go fairly far (probably to Milwaukee, Madison, or the Silver Lake Fox courses) to find a clearly superior course.

Not George Carlin 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

uniquely designed course. Extremely well maintained. More fun than most courses. Out of the way (so there is not much competition on a Sunday). It is very well marked, the maps are clear, the baskets are new.

Cons:

For those preferring concrete tees there are none here. The tee's here are some kind of wood chip and are really nice. If there are alternate tees I didn't find them. A 3.5, and a "gem" of a side trip actually. Could easily be a 4.0

Other Thoughts:

The design of this course is very well thought out using the space they have very well. It does NOT feel like you are playing the same 9 holes twice. Really cool holes through the woods with some nice long valley shots (have spotters if, like me, you are an amateur, on at least some of the holes). NO problem finding the tees. I'd go back gladly.
(almost a "must" to use gps to find the thing though, NOT Carlin State forrest but Carlin County Park), nearest to Eagle or Palmyra.

Fun course, plays well for multiple skill levels 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- The course plays with two sets of permanent baskets. They are in great condition and mounted well. The dual-9 or long / short layout is especially nice for families, where not all members may want to play both sets.

- Shorts are relatively simple and longs add some challenge into the course play.

- Good use of elevation and trees to shape the course. Some wide-open holes, here, but not so much that it gets boring fast.

- Clean park, good parking availability, bathrooms, and a pavilion are nice add-ons.

- Practice basket in the center of the drive-circle. Well placed with plenty of room to warm up or teach new players some basics.

- Good signage and bag hooks on the sign posts.

Cons:

- Gravel teepads can be rough or slippery. Not my favorite thing to see on a course, but these are in pretty good repair.

- Some holes could definitely play longer and eliminate part of the walks to the next hole.

- Navigation from 8-9 can be confusing for a first-time play.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course in an area that would otherwise have very little to offer for play options. It's close to camping in the Kettle Moraine State Forest and is worth the stop if you are in the area or just looking for a new course to bag that isn't another 9 baskets in a field.

What a sweet little course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 1, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was up north in Whitewater to attend a few shows at Alpine Valley and needed something to do between hotel checkout and tailgating. Course had a good rating on udisc so we gave it a shot. Beautiful little park in the middle of nowhere; hiking trails, playground, etc.

This course was remarkably clean and well maintained. The grass was mowed, I encountered no poison ivy, trees and foliage were trimmed. All baskets were in amazing shape. Signs were very clear and well done and the custom bag holder posts are a great touch. It also appears that someone is building stairs on the hill for #3/12,which will be a great addition. Has a nice practice basket with plenty of space.

My wife and I found the holes to be fun for both our skill levels, she was taking 5-6 while I was able to have a few 2 chances and plenty of pars. Plenty of elevation changes and a mix of wooded and open holes.
Each hole had two baskets which I think is a great idea. It would be a good idea here in Chicago area to start doing that. As someone who doesn't have a big arm I felt the distances were right in my wheelhouse. A few 400' holes mixed with 200-300' and a few short ace runs.

Cons:

The tee boxes could definitely use an upgrade. Some of the secondary baskets did not change the hole, it just made them longer. I did have a little navigation trouble but part of that was just being a first timer. The hill on #3 was rough go but as I said earlier it appears to be almost fixed.

Other Thoughts:

What a pleasant surprise this course was. Whoever is maintaining it really cares about the course. The little touches like the bag holders and trimmed brush really makes this place stand out from the average 9 hole. I would go 3.25 if possible but since it isn't I'll I'll go to 3.5 stars. Worth a trip if in the area.

Fun, relatively challenging. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 18, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 hole course set up in a rural park outside Palmyra, WI.

Dual Mach 3 permanent baskets at each hole. I love that this is becoming more predominant in WI. All mounted well, and caught as expected. Some nice pin positions on or near hills that can cause rollaways.

Good use of the elevation here. Many of the holes play up and down or across the rolling hills. The descent on hole 3 is a bit precarious, though...especially if it's icy or muddy.

Decent signage, with both pin distances shown. Sometimes a bit of scouting is needed, but nothing major. Navigation was pretty simple, as the course had a good flow to it. Bag hooks at each hole was a nice touch.

Decent use of the available trees. This course isn't super difficult, but several of the holes require a somewhat accurate shot. The distances aren't overly long, either, but they aren't uber short.

Cons:

There's not a lot of bomber type holes here, if that's your bag.

Gravel tees, one per hole. I'm just not a huge fan of gravel, but they were decent enough.

A couple of the holes are pretty short and open. Hole 2 comes to mind.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a fun intermediate level course. It's kind of out in the middle of nowhere, but with two sets of baskets, it has some replay factor, and you could definitely do worse in this part of the state. It's one of those courses that's just a little too far from me to go hit often (if at all), but if you live nearby, it would make a solid part of your course rotation.

Nice little park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 baskets on nine holes of beginner friendly golf. Nice secluded area, I can't see there ever being too many people out here. All the holes are reachable with exception to maybe 3 holes at around 370 ft. Couple of elevation changes makes things interesting. Hole 1 has probably the best man made elevated basket I have ever played on. Tee signs on every hole explaining how to play the intended 18 holes. Bag holder on every hole and benches on most. Definitely some love was given on this course.

Cons:

Only one hole forces a left to right shot(really good hole actually) while 7 shots require a right to left. Maybe more. A couple of them are really great holes but definitely a flaw in the design. Some baskets were mislabeled when I played but if you go by the signs you will be fine. Tee pads are gravel.

Other Thoughts:

Nothing special here but not a waste of baskets either. I'd play it again. I want to rate it 2.75 so I rounded up.
