debit card number stolen by disc golf store

How about saying, "Sure this is interesting, let me take your name and number and get back to you if we find anything out about this."
That would be a good example of customer service.

pasta and wood

it was probably one of the company's employees. why would an established store decide to get some pasta and wood with your debit card number?

Not implying there is a storewide systematic strategy here. Could have been a temp in for a day of moving boxes. Who knows. I have friends who work at surfboard companies and plant wholesalers, etc. People handle credit card numbers all day. It's not hard to steal them. Pay Pal or cash monet , bartering, etc. are all nice solutions.

As for computer virus, meh... why would the numbers be retrieved and used seven miles from the store's physical location, when I am three time zones away.

That's the suspicious part. If it's a pattern they'll probably get caught. The stupid thing is that those people usually don't stop. Greed, man. Our risk department sees it all the time.

I know when I get a hankering for pasta and wood nothing will stop me...not even the law.

It is my understanding that credit card fraud is one of the LEAST prosecuted crimes.

I applaud bbails for posting about it.

Banks are usually good about crediting our accounts with the money until their investigation is complete. I'll think twice about ordering online, going to the local shop and purchasing with folding money is my preference for obvious reasons. I placed a want ad for a certain disc here, I was approached by a member here that wanted big money for a disc I found in a local store, and they gave me a discount for being a good customer.

I say, walk into the shop, look around for the disc you want, ask THEM to order it, if they don't have it.

The Internet can be a good resource but it is also the biggest nastiest bad drug on earth for bad people (porn, criminals, people who don't live in reality et al.)

Not a popular topic since many of you are in the business.

Thanks for the heads up.

I wish my bank would have helped me out when this happened to me. They told me there wasn't anything that they could do until all the charges went through and then they could have me come in and fill out all the paperwork. Then I had to go for two weeks without any money at all. No account, no line of credit. There were a couple nights I didn't even eat because I was so broke. bbails, who is your bank because it sounds like they know what cs is.

We have had check fraud happen to us twice which is funny because we don't write checks. Because of this our bank (Suntrust) never made us wait more than 3 days the first time and they instantly refunded the second time. Apparently some clowns make checks with bogus account numbers and occassionally hit the jackpot with a legit one.

I won't buy stuff online (usually) unless they use PayPal...

whats nasty about porn

If you are watching it, you ain't getting it.

Wells Fargo is a good bank for protecting you. If they see charges in two states simultainiously, then they shut the card down till you contact them. They are not a good bank for other things.

that's because they're not protecting you, they're protecting themselves

The consumer still has a $50 limit for liability in the case of CC fraud, if the big banks haven't managed to change the law yet

Wells Fargo handled my situation pretty well. They gave me provisional credit pretty quickly for the amount in question. Then after an investigation period, gave me all of the money.

I would talk to the bank. I travel a lot for work and have had more than 1 transaction declined simply because they thought it was odd that i was in another state.

The $50 limit applies to CC fraud, but he used a debit card. Never, never use your debit card online if you don't trust the site 100%.

Some banks have fraud protection with their debit cards that's equivalent to a CC, but not all.
