Executing The Dream

A little shy of our 15th anniversary, we cemented a basket in place today, replacing a portable.

Call us tentative. Say it was a long trial period. Ponder whether it took us that long to be sure that we wanted disc golf.

At this rate, we'll have all permanent baskets by the year 2394.

...but did you put a lock on it? :)

...but did you put a lock on it? :)

Ha. The danger of someone stealing that basket is dwarfed by the danger of us losing the key.

And frankly, if they did, I rather they steal it without the concrete ball on the base, because getting that in level, in a precarious pin location, was far more work than just plopping down a portable and shoring it up with sticks and rocks until it's balanced.

We decided to pass on the property. The land was perfect for DG. That log cabin was HUGE! 4000 sq ft without a basement. The home itself would need 100k in it likely to get it back to where it needs to be. So, we decided to stick to the 5 year plan to save up cash to hopefully buy land and build our home with mostly cash. I know we are doing the right thing, it is just hard knowing that we could have that property right now if we wanted.

Patience, Grasshopper.

I learned what ragweed looks like this weekend. Unfortunately the lesson was learned after about 30 minutes of bush-hogging a bunch of ragweed, which I'm pretty allergic to. And this pic was taken about an hour after coming inside and after a shower. Needless to say, I'm gonna try to do a better job of keeping this crap knocked down more than once a year.

edit: I've been taking Flonase regularly for a week or two prior to the mowing. I guess it doesn't stand a chance when you're actively and slowly driving through clouds of the pollen.

Place your bets, everyone.

If you're like me, such pledges are about as durable as New Years resolutions.

(You might try mowing with a mask, at least during ragweed season, to improve your chances, though).

I'd guess that would be a good bet. Hell, I put off attaching the bush hog as long as possible most of the time.

I had a "buff" pulled up over my nose and mouth while mowing the other day, but I might as well have had nothing.

Further research indicated a respirator with an N95 filter is needed for ragweed pollen. Come to think of it, in my days as a construction laborer (almost 20 years ago) I'd wear a 3M respirator mask while sweeping out houses and it did seem to clear up my seasonal allergies while it was on for longer periods.

Having a beard most of the time makes them less effective though too. Guess I'll just quit bush hogging in Sept/Oct.

That, or keep it mown well enough that the ragweed never gets to flowering stage. (Yeah, I know, fat chance of keeping that pledge, either).

Man, this thread needs some new blood and a new dream to start....

Had a heck of a good turnout for a couple open play days this past weekend. Somewhere around 70-80 folks showed up. I've got the course looking as good as it ever has, but still have some odds and ends I'd like to get cleaned up in the next month or so. We had a burn ban here for a few weeks after we had about a month and a half without rain so some brush piles had to sit.

I whipped up some tee signs on the cheap prior to the open days in order to help get folks around the course. $25 bucks of Coroplast (Amazon: 10 sheets 18x24 cut in half to give 20 12x18 sheets), $15 for some color Sharpies (Meijer), and $15 worth of garden stakes (Home Depot).

I had a handful of comments from folks who seemed to enjoy the homespun nature of them, though a few asked if my 4 and 5 year old daughters helped, not sure how to take that. I doubt I'll bother with permanent signs any time soon considering their costs and my propensity to want to tweak things. I can put one of these together (many of them simply based off memory) in about 10 minutes each.

In any case, I'll only put these out during times when I know we're gonna have a decent number of folks rolling through (Open days, tourneys, etc.).

Thanks, Donnyv! I was wondering about your course a few days ago. The property look so beautiful when you started; it looks gorgeous now!

That looks beautiful, Donny. I need to find an excuse to get over to that part of Michigan. I usually don't get too far from the west coast.
