Couldn't find a thread dedicated to this gem of a course, so I figured I'd get one started.

Starting this SUNDAY AT 1:00 P.M., we're going to begin finishing this course. Any of you who have played this course know what I am talking about. This big boy course is still quite rough around the edges, making it enjoyable only to the most masochistic disc golfers in the Metroplex.

Therefore, starting SUNDAY AT 1:00 P.M. there is going to be an effort to get this course playable, at least for a weekly mini, and then continue from there. Weapons needed for combat this week will include but not limited to: Weedeaters, chain saws, pole saws, hand saws, rakes, shovels, trimmers, pruners, and any other instrument of botanical destruction you might have lying around. It would be advisable to dress in long sleeves and pants and to bring gloves.

Any work done this SUNDAY AT 1:00 P.M. or subsequent work days will carry a value, even more than the intrinsic brownie points you will be earning. We plan to set up a system to repay those who put their time and effort into this course. This of course has yet to be defined, but you can start earning now.

A large part of getting this course playable rests on our ability to get a mulcher of some sort out to the course so that we can cover the fairways so that we can find our discs. So if anyone has one, knows someone who has one, or knows someone who knows someone whose brother in law has one and owes him a favor for bailing him out of jail last time he got drunk at a Rangers game and had to be escorted out after telling the umpire to "Bend over and look out of your good eye!", then let us know SUNDAY AT 1:00 P.M.

I used to live in Ft Worth. (Pre disc golf days) Is that the park off Beach and I-30? Is the neighborhood still rough? I used to work at the Hotel at the intersection of Beach & I-30. I was the bartender and security there.

Yes, that is the park. Yes, it's still rough after dark. Yes, it's great terrain for a disc golf course.

OKAY, Then it is the one I was thinking of. Don't let the sun go down on you there! I hated doing security at that place! Oh, FYI That Hotel has a graveyard smack dab in the middle of their parking lot! lol Great place to stake out if you are security! ;)

It's about time someone tries to make this course playable.Because when I played it,it was far from a gem.Tons of potential to be a great tourney course. Is in dire need of AM tees also.I no longer live in north Texas but I visit my family about twice a year and would love to give it another chance.Good luck to all the workers,You all need it!! A mulcher is great idea for the fairways

That's the only course I ever lost a disc I threw right down the middle of the fairway,LOL

I had already decided to skip it because of some of the reviews and had come to the conclusion that there was no local group of regulars that played there enough to want to put some sweat into it. I LOVE Heavily wooded courses and can't wait to make the trip to bag it once you guys chop some broccoli. Thanks for hooking up us travelers. I always thought "What a waste of a wooded and up to date course, as far as the length and technicality." Thanks again and don't injure any shoulders, backs or wrists.

I get off work at 4:30pm on Sun. I've got a weed-eater, would it be worth me coming out that late?

WORD DUDE, WE SHOULD TOTALLY GO!!! I'll probably be getting off at around 2:30 or something.

The course right now is totally playable, just super rough around the edges. If you're not in the fairway, you're pretty much screwed. Love it though.

McLeod - I'm not sure if we'll still be working that late, it wouldn't surprise me, but we might be enjoying the fruits of our labor by that point. I'll PM you my number so you can hit me up after work.

dragon - There was a hint of sarcasm in calling it a gem, right now it's more like a diamond with a hell of a rough. Everything you stated is true and is known by those working on it. This course was never finished, baskets were only put in so that it people would begin to play it and we could get an idea of how it would play, what trees to leave/chop, and hope that the foot traffic would knock out some of the vegitation. Am tees are a priority for us, we realize that right now the course in not "fun" for the rec player and that cuts down on a lot of traffic out there. A couple have been put in already, but I believe when we get the mini running, it will be from red tees.

TXdgBoy - I like the enthusiam, come on out and bring a friend with you.

And just as an update, we got some ground clear down on 1-4, 8, and 9 yesterday so hopefully on Suday, the weed eating will be a bit easier and won't regenerate as quickly.

Everyone enjoy their Thursday and don't forget to pay the tax man today.

Great to hear this course is being worked on. I got a lot of negative feedback on the review I posted of the course when I played there a year or so back. But I feel it was honest and addressed these issues -- the course was incredibly rough then and sounds like it hasn't changed much. Which was a shame because it had enormous potential. Clear fairways and good signage would make it one of the best courses in the DFW Metroplex -- it is a great piece of land and the course appears to make good use of the land. I love hard courses -- the harder the better -- but without work, Gateway will never be fun to play for any but the biggest masochists. Huge thanks in advance to the folks who are taking this course under their wing. I look forward to being down there again sometime and getting a chance to see the fruits of your labors.

I played there last summer with Donovan and I had a good time even though there was a lot of underbrush. I will say I probably would have had much trouble finding my way without a guide.

So just to update: The front nine for the most part is not only playable, but almost enjoyable. Strange, I know. Brandon rented brush hog on Sunday and that was thing was amazing. That thing ate up the fairways like nobody's business. So to list the holes that have clear fairways and are playable:

1, 3-11, 13, 14, 17, 18

2 is not bad at all, it's short enough it shouldn't be a problem, just needs about ten mins with a weed whacker

12, is a project unto it's self, you might as well skip from 11 to 13 *though I sixed it yesterday so it must be getting a little better

15 I'm not sure of,didn't make it back there this week, last I saw it was flooded

16 got some trees cleared off of it but the brush hog ran out of gas about the same time we did, so it's pretty treacherous still.

But in about two short weeks, we're getting close to getting the course in really enjoyable condition. Granted the rough is still rough and it's not much easier, but lines have been opened up. A couple more weeks and the course will be tip top.

Thanks to everyone who has made it out so far, you know who you are and what you have done. The disc golf gods appreciate what you have done and will dutifully reward you. Look forward to seeing everyone out there Sunday at 1.

thanks guys. can't wait to make the trip.

Well now everyone has an excuse to come check out the course. Got this in an email from Dan Regal:

FYI, this is the formal announcement that the Gateway mini will start this
Sunday, May 2nd, at 3 pm so pass it on. Thanks to the few that have been
cleaning up the course over the last couple of weeks. If you want to help,
we'll be at the course at 1 pm continuing cleanup. The front 9 is playable
and has been mostly cut, trimmed, and is brush free. We'll be playing it
twice to get a full 18 in until the back 9 is complete. Feel free to
contact myself or Brandon Melton with any questions.

So looks like we're moving right along. Like Dan said, pass this info along to the other disc golfers in the area. Hope to you folks Sunday. Go Mavs!!!

I played this course today, and I have to say it was pretty fun. The back 9 definitely needs some work, but it's much better than it was just a month ago.

If anyone happens to find a yellow pro d stratus with no stamp or ink somewhere along the left side of the fairway about 75 ft short of the hole on #12., please contact me. It would be much appreciated!

Great to hear of the work to be done on this course. This is a great course just waiting to happen. Clean up the edges a little bit and this could be tops in the area. I can't remember what I rated it, but knew from the challenge that this was going to be a beast of a course that will draw great players to it.
