Going outside is bad for you - disc golf will give you ALS

Also known as Lou Gerhig's, a progressive, fatal degeneration of the muscles. Now I have another completely valid excuse as to why my game is falling apart as I get older.

Golf, and other men's hobbies, drive a 300% increase in ALS risk

Men who engage in recreational activities such as golf, gardening and woodworking are at higher risk of developing ALS, an incurable progressive nervous system disease, a study has found. The findings add to mounting evidence suggesting a link between ALS and exposure to environmental toxins.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease, causes progressive motor function loss and cognitive changes. While a definitive cause for the condition hasn't been identified, studies have increasingly suggested that the condition is caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental exposure to things like pesticides and heavy metals.

AND it's made worse by listening to heavy metal while you are outside?? Man, next they'll say smoking weed is bad for you!!

Constant exposure to pesticides and herbicides aren't great. I'd be curious to see if there are any studies involving farmers and neurodegenerative disorders.

Luckily for us most Disc Golf courses aren't meticulously manicured so shouldn't be much higher risk than park-goers and/or hikers.

On a similar note, I had a conversation with my skin specialist about my treatment of pre-cancerous spots on my face and head and he told me that studies have shown an increase in skin cancers found due to in the 1960's seed corn companies started giving farmers baseball caps with their logos on them for advertising. They became quite popular and farmers started wearing them working outside instead of the wearing traditional straw hats. Also my dentist once told me that dentists noticed farmers teeth wore down faster than normal due to breathing the dust/dirt while working in the fields, inhaling air through their mouth and grinding their teeth.

Certainly disc golf doesn't get the same chemical exposure from direct treatment like with golf courses/farm land (except multi use golf complexes with traditional/disc/foot golf all overlapping the same facilities). There are some courses installed at public parks or locations that historically had garbage dumps or were treated as dumping areas though. And some shuttered traditional golf courses have been converted to parks with disc golf (and other activities). Courses with water features nearby (creeks/rivers/ponds/lakes) could have contamination from upstream sources (past/present).

The only treatments I've really heard of on disc golf courses is for bugs (ticks/mosquitoes) and managing invasive bush honeysuckle.

Since this study was conducted on people diagnosed with ALS it likely excludes the casual golfers that weren't exposed as frequently and doesn't seem to dig into the exposures the golfers got from certain eras of course maintenance (age when they when playing).

Yes!! you should stay inside as much as possible. Preferably in a room/office/car with no ventilation to the outside. Try to stand as little as possible to save your joints. Always use care when turning your neck to look in a different direction. Never walk too quickly. Never lift anything! Consider wearing a helmet and safety googles at all times. A mask and gloves are advised. Only eat locally sourced organic food. Wear your safety belt!!

Are you still playing disc golf? Pickleball is where it's at.
Nobody ever got ALS playing pickleball. Now that's a real sport.
Don't expose yourself to BPE contaminated plastic discs any longer.
Mail them all to me. I've recycle them responsibly.

Which will compete with apple's iBorg. All those others offer shiny, chrome cyborg bodies, but the iBorg uses clean, minimalist design language exclusively in white and shades of grey.
