Maybe a dumb question...Possibly not on tree stumps

I used to know an old german immigrant who cleared his lake lot with a block and tackle and axe. pull a little, chop a little root, pull a little more, chop a little more. these were very large pines and lots of them. I guess he burnt the trunks and limbs, but he had zero stumps to deal with.
