Course Designer Reviewing - Fun varied woodland course

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Good Tees
- Good baskets
- Good Signage
- Great amenities on site
- Free to play
- Dual tees
- Varied shots through a mixture of different woodland

Cons:

- A bit short
- Hole 9 finishes back towards the car park but some way from hole 1
- The course is split into three blocks of different feeling woodland, a walk of around 150 meters required from hole 3 - 4, it's well signposted though.

Other Thoughts:

Cannock is the first dual tee course on Forestry England property. I came up with the first draft layout for this over 3 years ago but it's taken a while to come to fruition!

Cannock Chase is a busy visitor centre with loads to do for a day out. Parking is expensive but the course is free to play. There is disc hire available in the visitor centre.

Each tee has dual tees and the short course has it's own challenges even for advanced players.

The longer tees will probably play around 900ish to par in competition. The one par 4 is very much on the difficult 3 side but I felt like being nice.. There's not really a natural flight line to get the discs round the dogleg in one shot, It's kind of a putter par 4, throw a simple putter shot straight twice and pick up the easy birdie, there are ways to flare skip a driver to putting range or potentially a forehand roller but it felt more like a 4 than a three as a hole so sue me.

The first three play through mature pines bordered by bracken and some broadleaf trees, there's a lot of airspace to weave different lines through the trees, these are very picturesque with custom grown grass fairways. The next four play through a block of newer growth pines, probably around 30 years old, these are tighter tunnel shots with no ground cover and test a range of throws. The last two go into the oldest pines, loads of airspace and grass fairways and some real disc stealing rough to the right hand side so beware.

Overall it's a lovely course and very fun to play. If you're in the area play for sure, probably not worth a big detour for though There are no real downsides as it stands. It's not going to be the best course you've ever played but you will have a good time playing.
