Pros:
I had driven by this church dozens of times over the past two years and had never noticed the baskets. It wasn't until I was sitting in the parking lot for a drive through COVID test that I noticed the baskets. Because I came prepared, I was able to squeeze in a quick round.
- This is a simple Ace Place nine holer playing around the back third of the church's land. The course is generally in one plot of land as evidenced by having the baskets for 3, 4, and 6 within 200 feet of each other. On #6, I threw to #4, not initially realizing they're only 50 feet apart.
- Outstanding course for beginners. Holes range in length from 60 to 177 feet. Holes are all essentially open. The obstacles on this course are the trees on the perimeter of the property, with baskets placed alongside them on #2, 5, and 9, the small raving that players toss over on #3, 5, and 6, or tall grass/natural areas on #7 & 8.
- Ace Place is right. I was making a run at one basket after another. Nine holes led to 8 birdies, with none being more than 12 feet. My lone par was on #5, as my shot slid 20 feet past the basket and was blocked by a line of trees.
- Course is easy to navigate. The next hole's tee is easily visible from the prior one's basket. The trickiest transition is walking down the dirt hill on #6, especially when playing in the rain.
- Good for a quick round. Can also practice lots of approach shots. If you don't have a big arm, you've also got room for safari golf and can unleash some drives. Just be careful of the modular buildings.
- Throwing over the ravine is the best aspect of this course. You're throwing downhill on #3 & 6 and uphill on #5. These all offer good layouts to throw multiple discs, assuming you're carrying more than one.
Cons:
Extremely simple layout. Even compared to some of York County's school courses, this is still easier than most of those. It's much easier than Lookout Park, the closest course to here.
- If the course was ever busy, you'd have to keep an eye out for discs on other holes.
- Access is limited. Church has been a COVID testing site for months, if not longer, and will most likely remain one for the considerable future. By the time I finished my test and round, the parking lot was full of cars. There have also been times I've driven by and I've seen the medical staff sitting around waiting. So, just be aware when you plan your voyage here.
- The transition on #6 could be adventuresome, especially for kids or people with the wrong footwear. Just thinking of a family playing here, and a kid slipping on the dirt/mud, and ruining an otherwise fun round. A couple steps is all that would be needed.
- There was a better alternative than #4. It's a 60 foot hole that serves as the walk from #3's basket to #5's tee. There was better options, but I think they wanted to keep the layout as simple as possible.
- Pack it in, pack it out. Enough said.
Other Thoughts:
I drive by this church all the time for work. I never knew there was a course. Now, I have another spot I can take a lunch break when in the area.
- If you live close by, great spot to take advantage of. Also, with a middle and elementary school on the other side of the woods, this may get some play from students.
- #2 is another fun hole that's an easy 2. If you get aggressive and sail/skip into the woods, it's another hole that could result in a frustrating par, or worse.
- Courses like this are outstanding for kids. If you can get a kid to throw 100 feet and semi accurate, they'll have lots of chances for pars, or better, the first time they play. That's the goal for these types of courses.
- Good for a basic beginner course, but that's it. Just a reminder I rate courses against all others. As such, this is a lower rated layout despite serving a useful purpose in the entire disc golf scene.
