A Real Wow 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 barstamped discatchers in surprisingly good shape.
3 tees per hole in relatively good shape. Not perfect, but good enough.
Tons of great shot shaping required. Plenty of elevation changes and risk reward. Just really fun, challenging golf.
The ground cover is mostly non existent, so losing a disc means you don't want to try and get it out of the ravine.
Plays remote from the rest of the park. Feels very much like disc golf dedicated land.
Mostly easy to navigate with just a couple tricky parts.
Really nice large sign/map by hole 1 and the giant sledding hill.
Two 9 hole loops that go near the parking lot.
Really nice wood work. Loved the bridge that crossed the ravine in the back nine.

Cons:

A couple of the holes felt a little bit tree heavy, but I feel like you mostly just have to figure out how to play the hole.
The tee pads could be leveled again.
Some of the signs are missing.
Very popular amongst the "chucked" crowd. I was pretty surprised to see as many people as I did for how challenging of a course this was.

Other Thoughts:

There are some really unique and fun holes here and some more typical looking holes that are just fun to play. The bomber hole right off the back down the slope was super fun to crush a putter down. Loved playing around and in the ravine. This is the kind of course that feels special and with a little bit more love could be really premiere. The longs are crazy challenging and you'd really have to be on point to play well from those. Surely if you played here all the time, you'd start to get good pretty quick. Or quit. One of the two.

I'm excited to get back here again some day for sure. Shoot, I'd like to try that giant sledding ramp sometime in the winter too, lol

down the ravine! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 5, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

its a challenging course with a nice layout that flows nicely with good signage. you need alot of finesse shots on some holes or you will find your self going down the ravine. theres acouple holes that you can just use power, but still need some luck to clear some trees. its definetly one of the better courses in new york., one that i would say compares is perhaps basil marella in rochester? its an easier emery i can say that if you ever been there. overall great course.

Cons:

could use concrete or at least rubber pads! tough to play here in fall with the leaves very easy to lose your discs!!

Other Thoughts:

its a great course for pros and amatuers. great for a challenge every time and if you live close by then it does the job that some of the rochester courses do with a less driving! defintely give it a 4.0 rating would be a 4 1/2 even a 5 with concrete pads. its a great wooded course!

Good all rounder Course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Solid well rounded course. With plenty of holes for amateurs and seasoned players alike to be challenged and still enjoy playing. Favors accuracy throwing over power which allows younger players to keep up with older ones.

Cons:

The only really major down side to this course is it's very popular and can be crowed at times. That and the ravines that run along side the front nine are not fun to fetch a disc from.

Best Course Around 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Challenging, but still fun for amatuers. Lots of variety from hole to hole. Lots of elevation changes make for interesting holes. Easy to follow, not confusing, signs on most holes. Course stays relatively dry, even during rainy months. The sledding hill is a great way to start. Opportunity for Aces for pros.

Cons:

The ravine is steep and can be difficult to navigate if you're tracking down a disc. Lots of scummy people leave trash EVERYWHERE(course has about 2 trash cans). Back 9 seems like an afterthought compared to the front. WARNING, this course can get VERY CROWDED on weeknights and weekends.

Other Thoughts:

This course was more fun before the sport started gaining popularity. Would've been 4 - 4.5 a few years ago but the trash and crowds kill this for me lately.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A good variety of challenging shots off the tee. Abundance of trees make the course tough to master. Great contrast between the front and back nine even though all 18 are through the woods.

Cons:

Tees are often muddy and some have roots right in the middle of them. Several tee markers are missing. Some tees may be tough to find if no one in your group has ever played the course before.

Other Thoughts:

Accurate drives are key here, with power drives playing a much smaller part. The course is often crowded on nice days, sometimes causing a jam at the tees. While less challenging than Black Diamond at Emery Park, this is my favorite course in Western New York.

best wooded cousre i ever played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

there are a lot of trees on this course but for a wooded cousre the fairways are exceptionaly wide this is ny fav buffalo cousre

Cons:

on 15 the sigin is down so when you cross the bridge to get to 13 keep walking because the first hole you will se is 15 and if your not familiar with the cousre then you will probably play 15 as 13

Other Thoughts:

there is a large ravine that runs along the first three or four holes that is quite deep and a pain to get you disk out of if you loose it

Difficult and Challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Tough course where trees will have you thinking on the right approach. Also great for practicing accuracy. Wooded Areas keep you cool during the hot summer days. There are many different ways of approaching a shot from the tee. Unique tees that is very different from each other.

Cons:

Since this course is very popular you may find yourself waiting for others to finish. Blind spots around the course may cause people to hit you with their disc (doesn't happen very often). People have taken signs from the holes which tell you were the tees/pins are. Ridge Rats that leave trash on the holes. In some spots the tees are muddy right where you begin a new throw. Easy to lose a disc if you're not careful. People sometimes move the colored wood tee blocks. Not enough garbage cans.

Other Thoughts:

Favors the forearm throwers for right handers and vice versa for left handers. learn how to throw your disc more than one way for this course or you'll be in some pretty tough situations.

hole 13 and 14 are to the right of the trail after you cross the bridge from 12

the picture for the blue tee on hole 18 is wrong, there is a path to the left that leads up to a dirt platform which is the blue tee

** Always keep an eye on where the disc lands. It is easy to lose a disc here esspically if you get it under a bunch of leaves on the ravine. Be careful with your throws the ravine will eat your disc alive

Challenging and fair Pars 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Course designed around the Ravine make for challenging and yet go for it opportunities. You will need to test most all your shots through this course. Release well and score well,If your a little off it could be a long day. I have had it both ways

Cons:

OK I saw at least two trash containers on this course ,but that wasnt enough as there were beer bottles and cans all over. If only people would be more considerate and pack out what they packed in.The back nine seemed a little haphazard when compared to the thought out well front nine.

The Ridge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Excellent all around course, very challenging 18 through the woods snaking over and around a deep gorge and creek. Lots of elevation change, both throwing downhill and uphill.

Cons:

Can be a bit frustrating at times, alot of densly wooded fairways. You will hit trees. Other than the occasional cry for a chainsaw... no substantial cons.

Other Thoughts:

This is my home course, about 5 min. away. I play at least 5 rounds a week here. I have heard and read alot of complaints about "RIDGE RATS" making a mess, Look, this is a very very popular and heavily played course. Instead of complaining about the mess. DEMAND GARBAGE CANS!

The Ridge... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 10, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Technical and challenging wooded course will severely punish an errant throw, but with little chance of actually losing a disc. The danger of the ravine is a bit overstated; if you backtrack far enough you can usually find an easy and safe way down to your disc.

Most of the course is shaded, making it a good choice on a hot summer day.

Pretty scenery, elevation changes, and hundreds of trees to either damn or cheer, depending on where they deflect your disc to. Red, white, and blue tees truly play to their intended level, from an enjoyable jaunt in the park to a maddening sharpshooter's challenge.

Cons:

Young, inconsiderate "Ridge Rats" sometimes frequent the course, and litterbugs abound. More garbage cans would help alleviate the situation.

Teeboxes can be a muddy mess during rainy periods.

The course dearly needs better signage, as almost every new player gets lost trying to find 10 and 13 for the first time.

Other Thoughts:

The Ridge can quickly become an obsession for local players, despite its minor faults. A few inches here, a few inches there can be the difference between an excellent round and an embarrassment. Players who rely on a big distance drive off the tee will be cut down to size here; deadly accuracy and the ability to thow a variety of lines are far more valuable.

Nice Scenic Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 22, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The scenery is tough to beat, This is a nice wooded 18 hole course that rivals the other Buffalo courses. Multiple tess pads provide variety in distances.
Nice elevation changes. I really like the double ditch shot at hole 9

Cons:

missing signage slows down the game a little. The ravine is a constant pain in the butt and at times can become an extreme hazard.
Some holes cross other holes paths and it can get confusing.

Other Thoughts:

don't worry too much about throwing your good plastic, there is a small possibility of disc loss, but nothing like Como Lake.
One of the best wooded courses I have played in any state, but bring someone who knows the course if possible.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 4, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Challenging; which makes a good throw all the more satisfying. Heavy tree cover provides cover from wind as well as shade from the sun on hot days. Diverse holes that each provide a unique challenge and opportunities to try something new. The course makes awesome use of elevation change.

Cons:

Holes are shorter so go elsewhere if you feel like throwing far.
Can get busy and is often populated by new and inconsiderate players.
Be careful not to slip and fall. I've taken tumble here and watched others do the same.

Other Thoughts:

Could use some renovations on heavily eroding paths and degraded tee pads. Also, a few more garbage cans would be nice.

A local favorite 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

First tee off at the top of the hill gives a excellent view of Buffalo and Lake Erie, really nice! Course design around ravine is beautiful!. Dropping one into a 100' ravine can be quite a bummer, but challenging as hell!!!

Cons:

Course can be very crowded, tee boxes are dug in and somewhat worn out. Signs are missing especially on the back nine, you can miss three holes if you go the wrong way.

Other Thoughts:

An outstanding wooded course. Natural beauty and natural disasters. Fun, fun, fun!!!

Fun Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

Some unique, interesting holes. Despite being so heavily wooded you won't be slamming into trees every other shot.

Cons:

The deep gorge ends up being in play on a few holes and if you miss that putt or screw up your drive then you'll have some serious climbing to do. Some tee signs were also missing.

Other Thoughts:

I normally don't enjoy heavily wooded courses as much as I do the more open or moderately wooded ones out there but this course is definitely an exception to that rule.

There are a lot of really fun and challenging holes to be played here. #9's drive over dual canyons stands out in my mind as well as hole #15 which follows a winding creek downhill through a wooded alley. Definitely some fun stuff.

Chestnut Ridge is definitely worth a stop or even worth a trip especially to play the course. I enjoyed my round there quite a bit and plan on revisiting the course again soon.

1st Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 1, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

The deep gorge in the center of the course provides a unique hazard and wonderful scenery. Despite being in the woods, there is usually a viable throwing lane from tee to hole. The view from the 1st tee is pretty sweet.

Cons:

Some of the tee signs on the back nine are missing, and without those or a map it can be difficult for someone unfamiliar with the course to find the baskets, which are rarely visible from the tees. Can get crowded on the weekends when the weather is good, and on occasion people park their vehicles too close for comfort around the 5th fairway.

Other Thoughts:

Ignore the "par" on the signs and play every hole as a tough 3. It is arguably the most challenging course in Buffalo, and the most played. This is still my favorite woods course, and still the only place I've had a 40' approach shot miss and slide down a 40' cliff.
