Chuckey-Doak High School is home to a short 9 hole Disc Golf course. The course starts in the small, wooded park between Chuckey-Doak High School and Chuckey Doak Middle School. We parked in the back parking lot of Chuckey Doak Middle School and walked over to Hole 1 in that small little park area. When I first stepped foot in the park, I was instantly excited because it looked like there were going to be several nice little wooded holes. Do not let this first look at the course fool you like it did me. There are only 2 holes in the woods. The first is a downhill 150' hole and the second is 190' and uphill. I thought that was a funny choice to make having the shorter hole be downhill and the longer one being uphill but who am I to scoff at that. After you play these two wooded holes, there are no more trees in play for the rest of the course. This was pretty disappointing because the best time to play the course (when school is out for the summer) also happens to be the worst time to play the course because of the extreme heat of the summer and a lack of shade. This course has absolutely outstanding baskets and signage however it can be tricky to know exactly where to tee from as there is no exact spot marked and the course map says to tee from behind the tee signs. In most cases, I teed off from the left or right of the tee sign just to make the holes a few feet longer. The longest hole on the course is 325' which I actually don't have a problem with, because I am a fan of short ace run and beginner friendly courses. That is exactly what this course is. I do think that some of the par's were off with the only two holes over 300' being listed as Par 4's. This, I am sure, is a course par for beginners of the sport and the kids that get out of school and want to play a round of disc golf. In that sense, this is an outstanding course but it is definitely not a course that I would travel to often unless I was only about 10 or 15 minutes away from the course. I'm sure I will play it a couple more times in my life trying to best my personal score on the course but it definitely won't be often. Another complaint I have about the course would be the long walk from the beginning of the course to the end of the course. You could probably park at the parking lot in the middle of the course to shorten your walk after the round, but then you would have a long walk uphill before you even start the course. I personally would have loved to see a few more wooded holes. Just looking at the park area, I could see potential for 3 or 4 holes in the woods with the 4th or 5th hole teeing from inside the woods out into the open property which would give it a little bit more of that classic Disc Golf feel. Yes, I have talked fairly negatively about this course, but I would definitely like to give the course designer(s) props on how well they used the elevation on the land. There is only 1 hole on the entire course (Hole 8) that doesn't utilize any elevation. The rest of the holes play either uphill or downhill with varying styles of elevation and creatively used slopes. All in all, when I think of each hole separately, the holes are pretty fun to play but I personally think that the course as a whole could have a few tweaks added to make it a much more enjoyable experience overall. One last thing to note is that this course would be a blast to go out and play some design-your-own safari holes because there is plenty of land to work with as long as there are no other players, park visitors, or kids out on the property.
