A Gem in the Rough

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 20, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- A technical (trees in the fairways) course with several holes offering multiple lines down the fairway. There is a nice mix of wide fairways and tunnel shots.
- Good use of elevation change.
- Long and short tee pads marked with artificial turf and tee signs.
- Several signs to next tee making navigating the course good even without a map.
- Baskets are colorful enough to find through the trees and most have next tee arrows.
- Disc golf course is away from other park activities.
- Parking away from the road.
- Porta John and trash can near parking lot and soccer field.
- Course sign at the edge of the parking lot.
- Two green practice baskets in a practice area near #1 Long tee pad.
- Benches found mostly on the front 9.
- The first tee bench is used as the lost and found spot.

Cons:

- The best entrance to the course, at the back of the soccer field, does not have a sign.
- Some of the tee pads are a bit bumpy under the turf.
- The course is still new so the off fairway rough is just that.
- The fairways are not worn in yet.
- It's a long walk from hole 1 basket to hole 2 tee.
- Mind the tick warning signs. I've been told a mild winter, like we had, leaves the ticks more plentiful. I found several myself.

Other Thoughts:

- I'm rating this course a 3.0 for the basic course. I like the fairway lines and the greens. I found myself wishing for more elevation change and use of rock formations when finishing the front nine and the back nine provided it. Many amenities are in place so I'm very hopeful that more good things are to come and that adds 0.5 to my rating. A bit optimistic perhaps but I do think this is a gem in the rough. It mostly needs to be worn in.
- I only played the longs but am looking forward to getting back to play the short tees. They look like another experience.
- A few comments on some of the holes without giving everything away.
o Hole 17 green looked tough on approach but turned out to be quite fun.
o Hole 1 fairway has a split about half way that I find very interesting risk reward choice.
o In the middle of the back nine is a short steep elevation drop hole that I always find fun. They look so easy but my disc finds the rough more often than the basket.
- I hope you enjoy this course as I have. The Quabbin Valley Disc Golf folks are doing a wonderful job here.
