Pros:
Coonskin Park is a little tricky to find. My GPS was over the place. I finally followed the directions on the DGCR sheet. The course plays mostly up and down the mountainside as well as a few of holes playing through the grassy park areas.
You'll find the first tee sign in the parking lot. It just points you up into the hillside. The tee signs are just laminated pieces of paper. I don't see them lasting as long time. There are no tee pads. Just tee off next to the signs as you wish. The baskets are Duscatchers with the yellow band and #.
There are some fun and challenging holes here. # 3 has you having to hit a small window before the 280' hole takes a sharp dogleg left. I liked hole 12 a lot. It's a long downhill shot (400') down through a natural looking fairway. The park street is on your right and there is very thick looking rough on your left. Try and not miss your line here. And # 18 is an exciting downhill throw to finish your round on.
Cons:
There are not enough benches. By the time I reached # 6, I didn't need a bench, I needed a couch and some misters. It was more than a little hot, sticky and humid.
The course is not well marked. I thought the practice basket was # 17.
The tee pads are the priority here. Most of us need workable pads not just next to the signs.
Other Thoughts:
Look up when you're in the middle of the course and you'll see this structure high above you. At first, I thought it was a very high walking bridge going who knows where? I asked a local and he explained that those are the runway, guiding lights for flights going to Roanoke and also for military flights as well. I want to get up and walk up there on the boardwalk.
Coonskin Park has a few exceptional holes and then a bunch of so-so holes. It does give you an excellent cardio vascular workout if that's what you're seeking.
