Pros:
Cooper Rock state park is a beautiful park overlooking the Cheat river. The vista from the rock is magnificent. It is a heavily forested park with massive elevation changes.
There are diverse holes. They are not repetitive. They incorporated the looping 9 design back to a large parking area. The back 9 have the sweat home vibe but they are not easily playable yet.
Cons:
11 holes play adjacent to highway 68. It is loud and only the back 9 have serene atmosphere. This is a major pet peeve of mine. They put the course in the worst part of the park. I do not believe this course will ever be a championship level course.
The course is a work in progress. There are 8 tee boxes with crushed rocks. The rest of the tees are dirt. All of the fairways are poorly groomed. Cutting the course out of the woods, all the forest leaves stumps, etc. have not be cleared. Many of the fairways lack clear definition. Finding holes 1 , 10 and many other was like playing hide and seek. I played the front behind locals and they were unaware of the back 9? The course does not use the parks elevation changes the way they should have. The holes have elevation but not anything great than around 30'.
Other Thoughts:
Cooper ROCK could have a championship course but in a different location. If I were king, I would have created the course starting in the large parking lot near the rock. I would have played down into the gorge to the river. The paths from the electrical lines could have been incorporated. They are making cabins in one section were there is grass. If they used some of this area, it would have created more diversity. These would be a mix between open holes with many trees and varying elevation.
At the current condition of this course, I would not go far out of the way. I wouldn't play here again until it's been completed.
