Game? Well....

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 10, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Gamewell Park feels like the putting green for a large, professional course. Six short holes playing almost perfectly in two straight lines. Great for warmup. Great for kids. But not for much else.
- Six holes in a small space. Easy to navigate. Easy to play. Quick to be done.
- Baskets are in good shape. Tee areas are suitable for what's needed.
- Outstanding place to introduce kids to disc golf. Six holes average 141 feet in length. Other than a handful of trees, no obstacles to deal with.
- Good for a quick round or 4. Every hole is an ace run. Every hole should be seeing birdie putts.
- Hole #4 is the most enjoyable, I guess? Most trees in play, which actually forces players to throw a slightly different shot.

Cons:

Essentially zero challenge. Simple and straightforward. In other words: a boring course.
- Course is crammed into a small, tight space. All six holes are crammed into about one acre of space. That's impressive. It can also be an issue.
- On any hole, a shot offline will end up on a different hole's fairway. The space between the walking trail and the woods is as narrow as 80 feet in spots. And in that space, you're having holes playing side-by-side.
- Tees are grass/worn out areas. Not that you need a run-up to play here.

Other Thoughts:

I forgot to give my hole-by-hole analysis of Gamewell Park. Here it goes: #1 is open. #2 is open. #3 has a couple trees. I already mentioned #4. #5 is open. #6 is open.
- From the time I took a picture on the first tee (after already throwing) to taking a picture on #6 (prior to throwing), it was five minutes apart. All told, I was parked here for about 12 minutes.
- This seems like a nice small-town park. It's nice they put in baskets. But, it's hard to take this seriously as a course.
- It just far enough out of the way to make it a pain to bag while playing Hilton in Hickory or Catawba Meadows in Morganton. This has been on my bagging radar since it was installed. It wasn't until I had a reason to be within 12 minutes of the course that I finally played here. Any further away, and I still wouldn't have stopped by.
- That said, if It was close to my house, I would use this course to get my kids playing at. That's what this course's focus should solely be.

Gamewell Park - A Speed Baggers Dream

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 4, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Gamewell Park is a 6 hole, beginner friendly course in Caldwell County. The course features brand new DISCatcher baskets and natural tees marked by numbered yellow posts. The course is a pitch-&-putt course with an average hole length just over 141', which makes it a great place for families looking for a new activity to try out, beginners trying to learn the ropes of the game, or a place for more experienced players to seek aces.

The course has an easy flow, and is well maintained. There are a couple of trees around the course that cause potential obstacles for beginners.

Cons:

This course serves its intended audience well, but for everyone else, it won't offer a whole lot. It is possible to fit the whole course into one photo. I inadvertently managed to take a picture of the baskets for Holes 1-5 while taking a photo of the first one. With a single putter, I parked my car, started a timer, and was back in my car in less than eight minutes, while moving at a fairly casual pace.

Gamewell Park is a very small park, and the course is very tucked away, but still in play in a few areas. There is a walking path right next to the Holes 1-3, so errant shots could cause issues there. Hole 4's fairway also has a bench in the middle of it.

The course is extremely flat, which makes the only real variable the few trees around the course and the distance. Hole 5 is just long enough to feel more like a real hole, but right before it is Hole 4 which is a jump putt with a tee sign beside it.

The section of the park that the course is located in, does sit in the shade in the morning, so expect morning dew to linger in this area longer than you may be expecting. (This isn't really a con, just something you may want to consider if/when planning a bagging trip.)

Other Thoughts:

I saw the baskets for Gamewell Park after kayaking the Wilson Creek Gorge earlier this year, and have been wanting to head up to check it out ever since. Now that my left (non-throwing) elbow is having tendinitis issues, I have less time to whitewater kayak and more time to chuck discs - so I finally made my way back up here. For what it was likely designed for, Gamewell Park is great, but I don't think it would be fair to give it anything higher than a 0.5 rating. It honestly has taken me longer to type this review, than it took me to play.
While you are in the area, I would highly recommend driving the extra 15-20 minutes to check out the Wilson Creek Gorge. It is one of the best known classic Class IV whitewater runs in the state of NC. It is a ~2 mile, beautiful, roadside creek with granite walls that are pretty rare for the region. If the creek has good flow, there will likely be at least a handful of boaters dropping through the big four rapids on the run. And if you are lucky, you might get to witness some clean lines. If you are really lucky, you will get to witness some (safe) carnage. Lodging can also be found in this vicinity at Brown Mountain Beach Resort. Wilson Creek is one of my top 5 favorite rivers on the east coast, so I won't be surprised if I find myself chucking plastic again sometime soon.
