Pros:
Great Lakes Christian College has 18 holes of disc golf playing around their campus near Lansing, MI.
There are some nice holes playing up and down rolling hills around the edges of the campus. Two holes also make use of a large pond. Hole 2 requires a carry of maybe 225' across the edge of the pond, or you can lay up off to the right between the pond and the fence of an athletic field. Be sure to study the tee sign carefully, and tee off at the correct basket (as #14's basket is also visible across the pond, but in a different direction). Speaking of #14, that one was my favorite hole on the course. It's only 210' but plays downhill from a landscaped area around the college's flag poles, right at the basket with the pond behind it. Scary little hole here with plenty of risk/reward potential.
Overall, the course plays more open than most in the area - but there are usually at least a couple of trees and/or elevation change between the tee and basket. Several longer holes are mixed in to increase the challenge too - there are two par 4's over 500' and the average here is just over 300'. The course probably does enough to interest players up to an intermediate level, without being too difficult for beginners and students.
The tee signs are good, with all of the required info. The pavement is generally signed as OB, which makes a few holes more difficult. #17's basket is on an artificial island with pavement on all sides.
The baskets are DGAs in fine shape. One per hole, but I think a few holes had multiple pin positions per the tee signs.
Cons:
The biggest problem here is a number of safety concerns. #16 plays straight across the college entrance drive. Various drives/parking lots are in play on several other holes. A soccer field is in play on hole 7, and arguably #6 and #8 as well. Hole 12 is a right turn around the corner of one of the college buildings. I didn't actually mind this last one THAT much, because it's a tall roof here and there are no windows or other breakable features of the building that could be in play. The designers thoughtfully added a phone number to the tee sign, which can be called if you do manage to land a disc on the roof.
The tee pads are mostly rubber mats that are a bit lumpy.
The only navigational aids are on the previous tee signs. There are a couple of longer walks where additional arrows would be helpful. I would recommend using UDisc to navigate, as the map here on DGCR is out of date.
Extras like kiosk/practice basket/porta potty/trash cans/benches are missing.
Other Thoughts:
No issues with access here in terms of parking passes, ornery security guards, etc. I just pulled into the parking lot and played.
Other than the safety hazards, this is not a bad option for students or locals. If I fell into one of the above groups, I would probably split my time roughly evenly between here and Grand Woods Park 5 mins away.
