Woodsy Walk

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good course map at the start and accurate and descriptive hole signage, easy-to-follow course flow, good quality Prodigy baskets. There are also some nice touches around some greens, including rocks or wooden features to prevent erosion and at least one pole planted in a stump to create a raised basket. There also are some wooden bridges at helpful spots throughout the course.

Two tees on most holes and even three on a few. There is some hole variety, including holes that play out of the woods into a clearing and an open finishing hole that plays from a field to a guarded green. Most of the course plays through dense woods, with a few holes having multiple route choices. There are two long, open holes (holes 9 & 10, I believe).

There are a lot of fun and challenging wooded holes on this course and I enjoyed the walk through the woods playing them. It's my favorite kind of golf. The property feels isolated, even though it is in the midst of the city.

Many of the wooded holes present challenging lines to throw, but are fair and fun. However…

Cons:

Several of the wooded holes provide little to no opportunity to reach the pin, even on the best of throws. This is true especially from the long tee, as some holes (including hole one), are shaped such that the best play from the long tee is probably just a layup to the short tee.

Tee signs are located only at the long tee pads, as far as I could see. On many holes, someone playing the shorter pads would walk past the long pad to get there, but in some places the trail comes out at the middle or short pad.

Many holes had the baskets set at a level 12-24 inches above the usual height. Not in a way that seemed like an intentional elevated basket, but just as though the workers didn't know the preferred height or didn't want to dig that deep into the ground.

Other Thoughts:

The tees are gravel within a wood frame. Most of them are safe and level (or can be made so with a little time spent kicking rocks around before your throw). I include that here because that is better than natural tees (especially on this muddy ground), so maybe not a "con," but not necessarily a great "pro," as many courses have better.

Overall, I enjoyed this course a lot. The wooded golf is fun, to me, and I appreciated the challenge and the shade. It was definitely very muddy in places and there is dark water where discs can disappear. I would recommend it as a good place to play if you are in the area and it is clear that locals have made improvements to it. There may be more improvements to come.
