Mountain Views, Easy Course

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 28, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

+The excellent Summit County scenery is the main attribute of this course. Mountains in all directions. Beautiful scenery. I imagine that this course has nice fall colors as well.
+Nice purple Innova Discatchers. They were in good shape and caught well.
+Concrete pads. All in good shape and big enough for the length of this course.
+Lots of ace opportunities here. Most holes if you can throw 250' with some accuracy.
+Next tee signs/arrows and good enough signs help navigation be pretty smooth. Never felt lost here. Nice course map at the beginning.
+Obviously good for families and beginners as is designed. Great compliment to the other course.
+Some ups and downs but nothing too extreme.
+Enough trees to keep things interesting without being too much for the intent of the course.
+Shouldn't lose a disc here but it's possible.
+Practice basket at the start.

Cons:

-As a standalone course, it would feel to repetitive and easy but it is designed to compliment the other course and it does that well.
-Could have maybe been a little more intentional about making some of the lines a bit tighter or more challenging. A short, but tight, hole is still pretty approachable.
-Not a lot else to say about cons here. The course does its intended purpose well.

Other Thoughts:

+This course had a decent fun factor and is a nice warm up or cool down for the other course on site.
+Peak One is also a nice course on the other side of the lake.

Pros:

The Lake Dillon family course serves as an excellent warmup or cool down course when playing the Main layout as well. We chose to play it after the main one and it was definitely a much easier course. Definitely fits the bill of family friendly. This would serve as a nice standalone course itself if you're short on time.

The tee pads are concrete. A little on the smaller side but most of the holes are under 200' here, so they're really all you need here. All are level and have good traction. One tee pad per hole.

The baskets are Discatchers. Showing a bit of wear but all still caught fine and were easy to spot with the purple bands. Zero issues with these. One basket and pin position per hole. The baskets also have metal next tee arrows attched to the pole which is always appreciated.

The flow of the course is pretty easy to follow. Especially with the next tee arrows. I didn't have to use the map a single time out here. It helps that the walks from hole to hole are all very short, most next tees are obvious from the previous basket. Shouldn't take most much more than thirty minutes or so to play.

Tee signs on every hole. Pretty basket but effective enough for a course of this length. Hole #, distance and a basic hole map. More than enough info when you can see the pin on pretty much every hole.

There's a decent amount of trees to contend with out here. Most are on the shorter side but piney so they snatch low shorts right out of the air. Tough shots if you land in or behind any of these. Moderate elevation on this one too. Nothing like the main course but enough to be noticeable.

Beautiful views all throughout the course, mountains surround you on all sides. The underbrush is all on the shorter side too, so losing a disc here is near impossible. Restroom by the parking lot in the warmer months. Permanent and free too play.

Cons:

A little repetitive. Almost every hole is under 200' and pretty much all of them are straight ahead of you. Again, this is designed as a family course so that makes sense. Just not the most exciting place for more experienced players.

The course doesn't end too close to the parking lot. You can play hole 18 of the main course which gets you closer to the lot, making a 13 hole course.

Seems to be a pretty popular little course too. There were 3 other groups out there during our single round out there. You may be waiting behind others in peak hours.

Other Thoughts:

Great little compliment course to the main course onsite. This also serves as a much needed short course for the area. Lake Dillon-Main and Peak One aren't very beginner friendly, and are the two closest options. As is, this is a pretty fun little course in itself. Definitely worth checking out, especially if your here for it's big brother.

Great short course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great short course for families, beginners, or practice approach shots/putting. Super fun quick 12 holes, and you can make it 14 with adding hole 18 from the large course and throwing to the practice basket.

Cons:

Not as diverse as the big course and all of the holes are quite short.

Competent Short Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

A solid short course that provides excellent contrast to the main course on site.

-Views: With the reservoir not in sight, the views aren't quite as stunning as the big course, but this is still a gem of a place to play. Mountains on all sides.

-Basics: The only course I've ever played with purple baskets! Good catchers, plus concrete tees.

-Ease of Play: The flow is easy, despite no signage. Shots aren't going to disappear. There's no rough to deal with. It's a quick bag, as it should be if it's aimed at families.

-Elevation: Among the best use on a short course I've seen. Nothing dramatic like the big course, but consistent and varied.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: For a course with average hole length of 180', remarkably good. Almost every hole has some short trees or bushes to work around, with a couple of tunnel/pocket shots as well. Mostly the course plays up the hill, towards the first tee, but there are some downhill shots such as (4), which plays to a basket carefully concealed inside some pines. It's a birdie fest or ace challenge, but it's an interesting one that could see you having lots of interesting straddle putts if you don't park holes.

-Warmup: With the length, and playing along the long walk to main tee (1), this would make an excellent warmup for the big course. I wish I had played it that way.

Cons:

-No Tee Signs: Would be a nice touch. It's no issue with UDisc, but I like to be able to throw confidently without my phone showing me the hole shape.

-Length: Double-edged sword. This is the right length for a family, the wrong length for players with more than a few rounds under their belts.

-End Point: Great if you're continuing up to the big course. If you're just playing this course, it ends pretty far from parking. On the other hand, that gives you a chance to uncork a big drive down the walking path if you have the course to yourself.

Other Thoughts:

This is among the best novice-level courses I've played. It nails what it's trying to do. Unfortunately, that makes it pretty boring for most folks. I've marked it down as Typical on my scale. Solid warmup for the main course, which you should definitely visit.

Dillon Jr 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lake Dillon Family course 12 Purple rimmed Innova baskets and concrete tees. All holes are par 3, and very reachable for the average skill level. Starts near the parking lot, unlike the main course.

The high desert landscape has some trees and a little scrub grass, it is hard to lose as disc on this one. Short holes with pretty open lines are suited for youngsters and entry level players. Most fairways are fairly straight forward, but there are some protected baskets and mild shot shaping that must be reckoned with. Just a bit of elevation change on some holes.

Cons:

No tee signs, but spotting the target is never too hard. The path to the next tee is usually evident if you look for it. Worn trails will usually guide the way.

Short and simple, lacking any kind of memorable holes. If you're an experienced player this may be a nice way to warmup before playing the main 18, but you won't find much to truly test the skillset.

Other Thoughts:

I played this one after the main course, just for the heck of it. It was a quick run through. I was only one down, but I missed a lot of birdie putts. Birds were holes 6 & 8, and I made bogey on the last hole.

If I was a local I might play here if I had a time crunch and wanted a fast round. It would be fun to see how low you can get on the scorecard. It is a pretty area close to the lake, and good to work on the short game.

Mountain course for the whole fam 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 4, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 12 well mounted DisCatcher targets with Purple bands all in good repair. Never played purple DisCatchers before, dig em.
- 12 appropriately sized concrete tee pads.
- Good use of the mild elevation. Not as much as I like for a course but pretty spot in for a beginner track. After the first couple holes, most have a noticeable change from tee to pin.
- Good use of trees to force lines and create guarded greens. Nothing crazy technical but again, for the intended audience, the designer nailed it. Players are required to use more than one throwing style to get their 2 looks.
- With the hole lengths between 90' and 230' the distances are solid for this skill level of course and more advanced golfers will get almost all ace runs.
- Absolutely gorgeous area. Set high in the Colorado mountains and near the Beautiful Lake Dillon, the views while playing are worth taking a moment to stop and let it all soak in.
- While the course is a 12-hole one way track, it ends right by the main course's Hole 18 tee box. This allows players to complete their round with that hole as well as an additional local bonus hole with a natural tee framed with logs back to the practice basket instead of just a trudge back to the lot.
- Free to play.

Cons:

- No tee signs or next hole signs. Navigation is pretty simple as established paths are obvious. But beginner courses should be as beginner friendly in as many ways as possible. Hole numbers and distances, at a minimum, would be a huge upgrade for noobs looking to get out and chuck here.
- Really not much challenge for the experienced golfer. Nice add on after playing the main course which is a bit a of a hike but, as a stand alone, not something higher level players would go out of their way for.
- While it's a very pretty area, the course just doesn't have any Wow Factor other than the surrounding views. Just beginner level holes in a moderately wooded area with very mild elevation change and it all kind of blends together. Even beginner courses deserve a signature hole or two.
- One way course. As noted above, you can connect right to the main Hole 18 but that hole is certainly not designed for the skill level of this 12 hole track. We played it as it's a fun hole but I could see many newer players choosing to skip it and just walk back.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really fine installation for a family friendly course. Easy to follow and holes not so difficult as to discourage newer players. More advanced golfers won't find much value outside of ace runs and stretching their legs as a warm up or cool down for/from the main Lake Dillon course which is a must play for this area. Newer players will enjoy a mix of modestly treed holes with non-overbearing elevation changes. Amazing views will surround you so it's hard not enjoy this nice little track. Hopefully some additional infrastructure such as tees signs get added, seems like too nice of a little course not to have them. Waffling a bit on the numerical rating but I'll say the goods outweigh any issues and the beautiful mountain area views give it the extra nudge up to 2.5.
