Pros:
The North course at Lake McMurtry plays long if you use the back tees, and has nice design. The fairways can be wooded, but are also frequently more open, cut out of tall grass. The wooded holes require accuracy to get through the trees, but are not as punishing as some other courses in the region (Bois D'arc). Open holes are a bit longer, and will seldom offer a straight shot to the basket. Keeping your disc out of the tall grass is made tougher by some big doglegs and some mature trees on the way to the pin.
18 holes, with dual tees that are concrete. The baskets are Mach III's, all in good condition. There is another full 18 on the South side of the park entrance, but l did not have time to play both.
No water came into play, and there is not much change in elevation at all. The course was very nicely kept with no litter.
Cons:
No benches or trash cans. 17 and 18 were very long, without much else of interest.
Pay to play, park entry costs $6 per car. Not a bad price for all day access to both courses.
Other Thoughts:
If the the South course is as good as the North, I would absolutely recommend a visit to Lake McMurtry for any disc golfer. The cost isn't too bad, and the park is really nice.
There aren't any dazzling signature holes on the North side, but they mix shapes and distances well for most of the layout. The woods also add nice contrast to the links feeling on the more open areas.
It was hot and dry, and I played pretty lousy, but I'm glad I got to play at least one course there. I would like to return for the complete package some time.
