Enjoyable Course drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice course. Fairly wide open. Long tees are clearly marked. Not crowded, at least the day I played. Mostly open. Many of the baskets are not visible from the tee (sort of hidden). Baskets and A tees in good condition.

Cons:

Parking is limited right now, because of construction on the amphitheater. Park in the main lot and start of hole 10. Tees are well marked. Most of the B tees (red) are not marked, and have no pads. Next hole signs would be appreciated. I am bring my sharpie next time :).

Other Thoughts:

This is a good municipal course. Will be a bit challenging for beginners. Most holes are over 300 ft. Course map is essential.

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+concrete tee pads
+several benches
+great finishing holes 17 & 18, both with water OB and thin fairways
+great variety of hole distances
+grass is regularly mowed

Cons:

-it's in Alabama
-20 holes, but numbered 1-18 with an A hole after 2 and a B hole after 11. It's really not that much of a big task to re-number tee signs within a few years after you add new holes, but then again, it's in Alabama, so maybe it actually is a tall task for the locals after all

Other Thoughts:

This is an ancient course, first marked with wooden poles for targets (I've also heard trash cans were used for targets as well) maybe as far back as the 1970s. I believe by the 1980s this course had pole holes. By the 1990s this course was well-established as the most-used tournament course in Mobile, and it has continued to host big tournaments each and every year. If you've played for big cash in Mobile, you've played at Langan Municipal. By today's standards, it is nothing spectacular, but it's still a great course if you like more open courses where the wind can be a big factor.

There are four holes at this course that are just magnificent. The "A" hole is the first on this list, which is a straight 330' or so fairway but with water OB on the entire left side and road OB on most of the right side--when the wind is up the A hole is tough. Hole 8 is a par 4 that's downhill with big pine trees to maneuver around, again, made a lot more fun and challenging when the wind is blowing. The finishing holes 17 and 18 really end the course on a high note. 17 is a par 4 that has an OB creek running along the entire left side, and the fairway gets narrower as it approaches the basket which is placed underneath a huge and beautiful and shady oak tree. Then 18's green is a small island that tests your approach shot after teeing off out of a tight tunnel.

If we could rate courses more precisely on this website that is as dated as the tee signs on this course, this course would be a 3.75 in my book. But since the options are 4.0 or 3.5, I'm rating it 3.5, I think because I've just played this course so many times that it's sorta like an old song that I once loved but after hearing it 800 times on the classic rock station, I'd prefer something new.

A Pleasant Park Style Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 7, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.934 Rating) A lightly wooded course with new baskets and new signage.
- CHARACTER - I could tell this one had gotten some recent freshen up items. The signage looks great and is informative. I just wish it had next tee direction. Langan also has new Veteran baskets and they were a joy to throw at. Other amenity items includes seating at almost every hole, large concrete tees, multiple basket placements on nine holes and red stakes marked for a full set of front tees. There's also a community board at the start of the course, but it was basically void of any information.
- MODEST CHALLENGE - More of a bomber course than a technical course with enough length to appease Intermediate level players. I enjoyed the pucker-up shots on (A), (3) and (18) where I had to really concentrate to not leave a souvenir. I think a 900 rated player will average even par out here with just a couple holes that will challenge Advanced players to score well.
- UNIQUENESS - Langan's hole variety is fairly typical hole to hole with a few curve balls. The finishing hole is a true island green complete with a bridge and water on all sides. Hole (8) is a 600 foot bomber hole. A few holes bring into play a parallel manmade drainage ditch. A few shots pocket around some unique sprawling trees and tropical vegetation. No really much in the way elevation usage, but to be fair, there wasn't any available. Maybe hole (15) drops by 15 feet.
- FINISH - My favorite 3 holes where (15), (17) and (18), Had the course stopped at (14) I would have given this course a 2.5 rating.
- MAINTENANCE - For the most part, a well taken care of park. I spotted some trash along the water's edge a few times, especially on (18), but that is to be expected when the creeks are being fed from high population areas. The entire park was mowed and there were no large branches in fairways. A few tees look like they need repair, but all the surfaces are way better than natural ground.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - A nice course for a large segment of the disc golf population. The front red stakes are perfect for those around an 800 rating and the whites tees are perfect for those around a 900 rating.

Cons:

A solid course with a couple minor issues
- NAVIGATION - Doable, but less than desirable. To start, no course map at the community board. As mentioned above in the pros, no next tee direction on the signage. No navigational cues at the baskets. Baskets are not numbered. There were 4 or 5 occasions where I stood at the basket, looked around, and ultimately strolled the wrong way for a hundred feet and then changed my mind. The only saving grace is the openness of the layout and the fact that a majority of the next tees can be seen from the prior basket. To end on a positive note, the course is very cart friendly.
- LOOSE DISC OPPS - I found the inclusion of water elements to be beneficial for my experience and I increased the course rating for it. However, there will be many that hate the amount water in play and the unforgivable element it presents. Don't miss left on bonus hole (A) or (3). Anyone that does will likely be playing with one less disc. The finishing hole is a true island green surrounded by water and the water is cloudy enough to conceal a disc that's just one foot under water.
- PARKING - Hole (18) finishes 650 feet from the parking area.
- SPACING - I had to wait several times for walkers on adjacent pathways. Although only one hole throws over a pathway, about a dozen of them have park roads or pathways paralleling the fairway edge. Not a major issue, just less than ideal.
- TIME PLAY - Figure 80 to 90 minutes for a solo and 2 and a half hours for a foursome.

Other Thoughts:

A solid utility course that I'm sure gets a fair amount of play. If I lived in the neighborhood I'd be here weekly. Langan is currently the sixth highest rated course in Alabama on DGCR, a ranking I personally don't feel is accurate anymore. I barely have it in my top 20 out of 73 Alabama courses played as of this review. Among Alabama courses with at least 4 trusted reviewer reviews, it ranks 16th in the state. Regardless, still a nice spin if in the area. For those outside the area having not played in the Mobile area yet, The Admiral should be the first stop.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - A pleasant easy going feel of a course. A few holes like, (3) and (17) for example, look stellar. However, much of the course is either lightly wooded or an open parks style setting. None of these holes are eyes sores, most just won't get anyone scrambling to take a picture. In totality, I scored the course as average beauty.

The end comes...drums, drums in the deep...They are coming 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- free to play, plenty of parking
- numbered baskets
- dual tees, dual pin positions
- huge concrete tees
- lots of park amenities: bathrooms, shaded rest areas, the occasional visit from the ice cream man :)
- distance variations between long and short tees
-high quality informative tee signs

Cons:

- natural tees from reds
- no tee sign from reds
- red tee markers not numbered
- no pin position indicator on tee signs
- mostly open course, a little plain
- no direction signs between holes
- layout not always intuitive, sometimes players have to double back to next tee
- no information at first hole bulletin board
- no maps available
- mostly flat course
- not very punitive on errant throws

Other Thoughts:

Langan is an open park style course that uses variations of distance to create a majority of its difficulty. Large trees are scattered throughout the flat landscaped plot of grassy park land. The concrete tees are gigantic, the tee signs are excellent, and the baskets are in great shape. The park features a walking trail, but it barely interacts with the course play. It's big area, be prepared to do a lot of walking.

Gameplay was pretty typical for this style of course. The holes don't require much fairway shot shaping. Errant throws won't be too severely punished due to nonexistent rough. Big drives are rewarded with birdie chances. Pars are fairly easy to come by for the distance challenged. All in all, I though throwing here was simple yet fun.

Navigation seems like it should have been pretty straight forward, but wasn't at times. Sometimes I got mixed up about where the next tee pad was located. Walking from 7 to 8 and the last few holes without a map to consult had me walking in circles, which was pretty annoying. The jumble of baskets toward the back of the course made it tough to figure out which tee to walk towards next. If players want to throw the reds, it might be a good idea to walk to the long tees to take a peek at the tee signs. I could not find 19.

I brought a full bag with backups because I was afraid of water hazards gobbling up my favorite discs, all for not. The chances of losing a disc to water OB was fairly low. I really only used a few distance drivers from long tees. After the drives, putters sufficed for most approaches. Mids were barely ever thrown during my round. Ditch the extra discs, unless you have a cart, it's not worth the carrying around extra weight.

Other other thoughts: I have been waiting for the weather to be less thundery for a trip to Mobile for the past 2 months. I picked a day that had a low likelihood of thunder and still got caught in a brief but powerful thunderstorm. It turns out that Mobile is one of the most lightning prone cities in all the US. It might be a little overboard for a course review, but here are some lightning safety rules to follow to avoid becoming a lightning statistic:

- postpone activities promptly
- take shelter at the lowest point
- keep an eye on the sky
- listen for the sound of thunder
- suspend games or practices
- listen to NOAA Weather Radio
- if you can't get to a shelter, stay away from trees

Nicest in town 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course layout was challenging, but not over challenging. Concrete tee pads on all holes with good signage. Best in town, this wasn't saying much in my opinion seeing that on most courses in town didn't even have tee signs.

Cons:

The course did not have many shots that were a real challenge, it had a real throw this disc twice then putt mentality the whole time I played. Some holes did have odd or difficult transitions and could use some signage that points to the next tee.

Other Thoughts:

I played with a great group of players that I picked up with that made the experience much more enjoyable. The course had few flaws but does need some diversity and this game doesn't have to be all distance to be difficult.

Finally played this course... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 30, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

*Nice mix of short tosses among trees and long bomber throws
*Nice usage of water hazards (I'd heard horror stories of the water when I first stsrted playing years ago but they weren't that bad)

Cons:

*The small bridges on the last few holes didn't feel very sturdy
*Couple of confusing holes (think it was) #7 and one of the last holes that I had trouble finding
*Several holes were missing the tee signs (posts were there but the actual signs were missing. Don't know if they were blown off in the storm or if someone decided to take them).

Other Thoughts:

I wish I would have played this course a long time ago. I really enjoyed the variety of hope distances and arrangements, ranging from short to long throws, water hazards to wide open throws.

Surprisingly, the course was in fairly good condition. There area a couple of places still holding water and were very damp, but I was very surprised that it wasn't as wet as I thought it would be especially after the epic rainfalls we had this week.

Plane, Train, and Automobiles 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 18, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Two tee positions per hole - shorts are natural, marked by post, while longs are 12' long concrete, trapezoidal, with accompanying tee signs. Two pin positions per hole.

Cons:

Not much - on the flat/open side, if that isn't your thing.

Other Thoughts:

The public park this course is set within is absolutely huge, quite open, fairly flat, containing a large lake, and offering a variety of recreational options, including the disc golf course. While not wide open, a few large trees to avoid early|middle|late, but usually only one of the these, and the length (average ~360'), provide the challenge. About half the holes require controlled drives (i.e. avoid a few tree trunks) from the tee, while the other are "bombs away" with your favourite distance driver. Most tee-shots simply need straight throws, with a few requiring subtle turns or fades.

While there plenty of nice holes early, the course really finishes strongly, bringing elevation, water, and tightness into play. Holes 15&17 both throw down-slope, and you regain this on straightforward #16 in-between. Basket-15 sits on a "peninsula", with an open, watery trench in front/right, trench/brush behind. Basket-17 sits under the branches of a tremendous tree, guarded by water/tree-line on the left, and thick brush on the right/front, forcing a very accurate right-turning approach. Hole-18 has you throwing out of a wooded-window early, with water left, then a touch-shot to the basket, sitting on a small island.

Navigation, even without a map, was fairly simple. Of note: 1) tee-4 is nearest basket-2 - cross path to find tee-A, with basket on cul-de-sac near the water, from which it is easy to find tee-3; 2) from basket-14, cross road, pass tee-16, pass bushes, to find tee-15 on left.

A fine play for those who like their courses on the open side, but still requiring good control in certain situations.

Langan 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 31, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

• decent signage
• concrete tees
• thoughtfully designed, scenic
• variety of shots needed / lots of long shots / water hazards

Cons:

• clean facilities iffy
• no elevation to speak of
- dare I say some holes can get a little repetitive

Other Thoughts:

Langan's a cool course - scenic, playing across a large park. there are also drainage ditches/creeks/trees running through the course and a small pond providing plenty of hazards

After hole 14 it gets confusing - the closest tee to basket 14 is tee 17.... tee 15 is further back, and 16 plays back from where you came.

Gave it a 3 because it has a lot of basics covered, but even w/ the water hazards and trees it gets a little repetitive. Be prepared to work out your arm!

Enjoyed this course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Played this course twice on my way through Mobile. Once I located the opening hole it was relatively easy to navigate. The holes provided a nice mix of skill and distance. There was some water on several holes with number 18 the most challenging for me. You tee out of a tunnel and then chip to a hidden basket on an island. The jumper hole, "A", was great for my forehand style.

Cons:

The tee marker for number 14 was not there.

Other Thoughts:

Will certainly play this course again if I get a chance.

Fun February Frolfing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 6, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good mix of lefts and rights, short and long holes
Concrete tee pads
Signs denoting baskets and yardage for each hole
Water hazards make it interesting
Well maintained, not much trash at all and no overgrowth (though I did play in February)
Baskets in good condition
Fairly easy to navigate
Friendly locals
Ample parking

Cons:

No real doglegs or tight skill shots
No major elevation changes (Can't ask for much being near the coast)
7 holes with water hazards! (I know I put it as a pro as well, but I can imagine many people lose discs)

Other Thoughts:

Played this course on the way through town and had a great time. Most shots are pretty wide open, making it a good course for beginners and good opportunities for birdies for more advanced players. I'm much more used to wooded courses so this was a fun change. On a few where I could just bomb it and not worry about hitting much.

The water definitely adds a sense of risk to big drives, but I didn't have to go swimming.

I would have given it a higher rating if there were more skill shots involved (most holes had a straight shot open), but that has more to do with the park's trees than the course itself.

No tight fairways was a change for me, but overall a very fun course. Will definitely play again if I'm in the Mobile area.

A course with decent variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Langan park tests the complete golfer. Set in a public park the course utilizes a wide variety of the terrain in the park.

There are a good mix of shots on this course. Though primarily an "open" course there are plenty of holes which utilize natural trees and other obstacles to provide designated fairways. A few holes even play near some water adding a little sphincter effect to the shots. There are some great hyzer/anzyhzer shots. A good course to practice rollers, sidearms, and nearly any other shot you may need in a standard game. Multiple routes typically exist for almost every hole. I was not bored while playing this course.

Tee signs are present on every hole with seemingly accurate distances and "next tee" directions.

Tee pads themselves are excellent. Concrete, flush to the ground and wide enough for a good run-up for some of the longer holes.

Primarily a course for testing control and accuracy off the tee there are a couple of nice bomber holes in the more open areas which allow you to air it out.

Cons:

Like most of the course I have played in the Mobile area this course is pretty flat. Though not always a big deal I personally feel as though elevation is a must to take a course up a notch.

It has been a little while since I have played the course but I do remember it being difficult to navigate. As the course encompasses a wide area of the park and is pretty open the location of tee pads is not always intuitive from the previous pin.

I played during a random weekend when there was a local cross country meet taking place. I have driven by the park a few other times and have gotten the impression that it can be a very busy course which may make for some extended rounds as you wait for non-golf patrons to safely get out of the way.

Otherwise not a lot of negatives about the course.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a good course. Not flashy but well designed in terms of providing for some cool shots. Hole 18 is definitely a tough hole to end on which really tests every part of a good disc golfers game.

I would definitely suggest this course to play if you're in the area. A great complement to the other wooded courses in town. The only reason it does not get higher marks it because I compare it to all of the other courses I have played and reviewed and it is not quite to their level.

Pros:

Great course, layed out and designed very well. Brings all shot variety into play. Always kept up and clean. 8 foot concrete tee pads and nice hole markers on every hole. The finishing hole is on an island surrounded by water and muck which makes for an interesting finish.

Cons:

There really isn't any cons about this course. The only thing I can think of is that for some players, alot of the holes are going to be long and hard to par from the regular tee pads, but if that is the case, they have red tees that shorten the long holes significantly. There is also snakes at this course, but I have only seen them down in the ditches and in the water, but alot of the holes play around the ditches, and I actually know a guy in our league who was bitten by one trying to get his disc out of one of the ditches.

Other Thoughts:

This is really a great course. This course will make you have to throw every shot in your bag. It has a 660 foot par 3, and another 590 foot par 3 that requires two great anhyzers to reach the basket, which has about a 20 foot drop off into muck if you can't get your second shot to hold it's line. I am a local, and if you are asking about the course in Mobile, it is know as "Municiple Park" and not Langan.

Fun Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a large grassy park with open fields, areas with scattered trees, and some areas that have denser trees and some brush to contend with. That makes for some nice variety throughout the course, with some open bomber type shots to stretch your arm, some holes where you have multiple lines to choose from through the trees, and a few tunnel type shots. There are several water hazards in play, and they're used well to make challenging but fair holes that will punish errant drives. A couple holes have risky basket placements near the water hazards, making for some fun greens.

There is a decent mix of hole shapes on the shots that have more defined lines. you'll need to throw some different shots to be successful on the tighter parts of the course. There is good length variety here, with a few holes long enough to really stretch out your arm and some shorter ace run shots mixed in.

The park is well cared for in general, with not a lot of trash or vandalism. The tees are nice concrete pads with enough texture that they're not slippery even with a little water on them. The signs are basic, but have plenty of information to know where to throw for the most part. The course flows well enough that there are only a couple spots that aren't obvious where to find the next tee. Even then, those couple spots aren't all that hard to figure out.

Cons:

The alternate pin placements looked like they would change up the course nicely, adding some variety and different looks to the course, but with some hidden pins from the tees it would be nice for the signs to indicate the current pin position. There are a few holes where you'll have to walk up to see exactly where to throw. It looked like the alternate tees would change things up too, but with natural pads I can't see them getting all that much use compared to the nice concrete set.

The course gets a little repetitive at times, with several holes that are mostly open field shots with just a few trees. There are some great holes here, but there are also a few that really just feel like they're only there to get you to the next hole.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice park course with some cool holes, but also some boring, typical park holes. Beginners might find it a little long, and some of the water hazards could be intimidating for newer players. More experienced throwers will find some cool challenges and some holes to air it out a little more, but it's a little lacking in different challenges to be a top notch course.

Many holes should have been at least a par 4. Last 4 holes were very confusing by the layout of the course. Directional signs need to be updated.

Other Thoughts:

Loved this one but skipped holes because of the layout of the last 4. Soon as that is fixed this will be a perfect course.
