Pros:
Lenexa DGC at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park is the perfect beginners course. It has everything you might possibly want for a newbie to have a fun time and absolutely nothing more. This is the place to get your first birdie, your first ace, or your first under par round. Amenities are nice, being in a well-kept up park, and cement tee pads, tee signs, and pretty straight forward navigation.
Every hole has something interesting to it. There are a decent amount of hills, scattered trees (especially on 4-6), and a couple of low ceilings. There is hardly any thick woods, so there's not much lost disc potential. It's possible on 3-8 due to a creek, but the danger is pretty low.
Most holes offer multiple lines to the basket, despite how short they are. This makes the course a little more fair for different shot types, especially for people who only throw BH or FH. The hills offer some decent variety, mainly 2 and 9.
Even for intermediate players, this place is a birdie fest, and scores of -9 quickly become possible. You can also make a back nine for yourself, which uses the existing tees and baskets but adds mandos to force different lines around certain trees.
Cons:
Okay, the holes are really short, and that prevents this course from being very exciting. While that's fine for this course, having a little more distance would always spice things up a bit. The shortness also means some of the trees don't do anything. Especially on hole 6, you can completely miss your line but still have a putt because all of the trees are near the basket. Also, hole 1 is pretty boring; the only tree is beside the basket, and there's a path behind. This may have been intentional, starting with a simple hole, but the result wasn't great.
Safety can be a concern. Walking paths are somewhat in play on around half the holes, and also tennis courts on hole 3. In most cases, it's easy to see if anyone is coming, but the exception is hole 8, which has a path near the basket and trees that block your vision. One of the pins is across the path, which makes things even worse. While smart players will do fine, a busy day could make rounds take annoying long.
The multiple pin positions don't really add anything to this course. They bring some more paths into play on some holes, and the pins are pretty close to each other anyway. While it technically gives the course more variety, it makes the tee signs a little more confusing.
Hole 9 is missing at the moment. You can either skip that hole or play it to hole 1's basket.
Other Thoughts:
This is one of the few courses that I don't think has any room for improvement. It's made for beginners, and it fulfills that role perfectly. While it won't offer much challenge for anyone better, it is a good warmup course and would be a course I would love to have within walking distance of where I live. 15 minute rounds are very feasible.
If you call the paths OB, several holes become instantly harder. This is good as it adds some extra challenge while not burdening the beginners.
Overall, I like this course even though it isn't very grandiose. It's a fun and casual round no matter who you are, and while most players will hopefully outgrow this course and turn towards the many better courses in the area, this can be a stepping stone for bigger and better courses, or one you come to just to mess around and have fun.
