Pros:
Cement Tee pads
signs on most of the holes (there were a few that were damaged/missing
Several good 2 shot holes
Mostly well defined fairways
Cons:
Not much elevation
Kiosk map at parking lot has been destroyed.
has a couple of long wide open holes that kept me from rating this course a 4
Other Thoughts:
I need to point something out first. This course is the "Gold" course, it was built to be a championship caliber course that is in the same park as a "Red" much shorter and easier course. Because most Disc Golfers are recreational players, this course does not get played as much and it shows. While for the most part, the fairways were defined, there were spots of overgrowth. At the end of winter, these should not be there in a well maintained course.
This is the 2nd Mike Olse course designed I have played that I know of.
You start off with hole one, a hard dogleg to the right, this is a true 2 shot hole. You want to throw a shot down in the open to get a good upshot to the basket. There are several smaller trees guarding the upshot so the drive is very important for a 3.
Hole 2 is across the road and across the creek. I had to use the map to find the tee. Just a simple little bird shot.
Hole 3 is a dogleg left. Lots of tree's make this one tough to get a 3, a lot of luck here. Just stay in the fairway.
Hole 4 was also a little hard to find, walk down the ball field fence line and you will see it. It is a good right to left shot with a ditch behind the hole.
Hole 5 is a little bit shorter left to right shot. There are just enough trees and rough to make it hard to see the basket off the tee, but the area around the basket is relatively open.
Hole 6, this one is tough, you have two tight lines just to get to the ditch, then the basket is farther across and to the right. Hit a tree early and you are looking at a high score on this hole.
Hole 7, another 2 drive hole with many small tree's in the fairway. More open than a tight hole, it is still a tough 3.
Hole 8 is a nice left to right birdie opportunity with almost no trees in the fairway.
Hole 9, another long hole with a right to left, then left to right doglegs to the basket.
Hole 10, semi tight off the drive, but wide open the rest of the way.
Hole 11, another really short must get 2, basket is behind a nice little grove of trees.
Hole 12 tight fairway, don't try to over throw this one, just get 1/2 way and throw your upshot for a 3 Lots of smaller trees in the way.
Hole 13 Another tight fairway with the basket off to the left.
Hole 14 ate my lunch. This is a crazy hole, very tight off the tee, the fairway goes off to the left. Then it goes off to the right. Then you still have to throw around some guardian trees from left to right. This was my worst played hole on the course. I feel like I hit every tree and could not stay on the fairway.
Then you walk back a little for a sweet little hole 15 throwing over a laying down tree.
And then you get the 3 boring holes that contribute to this course only getting a 3.5 instead of a 4.
Hole 16 is a longer right to left shot down along the tree line. The Basket is up in the trees, but wide open to get too. Just don't throw it tight and you can get an easy 3 here.
Hole 17 is just long because it is pretty much wide open for 90% of the fairway. There are zero trees in the fairway until you get to the basket that is guarded on the left and the right forcing you to throw straight at it or spike it. (over head players would like this upshot)
Hole 18 again, is pretty much wide open with only a poll and pond as obstacles. With the wind coming off the coast most of the year, you have to watch your right to left hyzer shots, the wind will pick up your disc and goodbye, it is in the middle of the pond. Basket is less than 30ft from the edge of the pond.
This is a championship level course. It is NOT for recreational players (or old guys like me who can't throw far anymore) But it needs some tender loving care. Clean up this course and it could be much higher rated.
Would I play here again.
To be honest, I would enjoy the Red course more because I don't have the accuracy or arm for the Gold. So no, I would probably not play this one again. Too overgrown, too tight and too long for me to enjoy it.
