Macon Sportsplex

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

-- Eighteen DISCatcher baskets in good shape.
-- Restrooms and water in office, but it was closed on a Tuesday morning in June. There is a port-o-potty on site.
-- Nice tee signs with par, distance, basic map and next tee indicator; holes 8-10 (behind the softball fields, away from parking and the road) do not have signs.
-- Big concrete tee pads.
-- Best holes are 8, 9, 11 and 14. Eight is 486 feet (the second longest hole on the course). It plays RHBH between the softball field left and trees right. The basket is tucked into the trees 20 feet right and slightly downhill. Nine requires you to hit a narrow gap between an 8-foot tall fence left and the trees right with the added challenge of a light pole in the middle of that gap. It's about 80-100 feet to reach the open field. Eleven is 535 feet and open for probably the final 500 feet, but you've got basically a clown's mouth of trees to go through 30 or so feet off the tee. Fourteen is 362 feet mostly open until the final 30-40 feet. The basket is slightly right and uphill in a stand of trees.
-- A few baskets in the open area are placed on slopes to add some challenge/interest to otherwise boring holes.

Cons:

-- Mostly open course. Trees are only in play on 2-3 fairways. On perhaps a handful of other holes, trees might impact your tee shot or approach.
-- Ground was a muddy mess when we played in early June 2024. The mud was closer to clay than mud and stuck to everything. It's hard to know for sure, but this appears to be a somewhat permanent condition.
-- The complex was empty when we played, but if the fields are in use, you are going to run into trouble and might have to skip a couple of holes.
-- No map on site.

Other Thoughts:

-- This is almost the definition of an average course in a sports complex. There is not a lot wrong with it, but there isn't that much right, either. If you live nearby and the ground is in decent shape, it's definitely worth playing.
