Pros:
Oak View Park is a neighborhood park that runs under the power lines. There are basketball courts and a parking lot at the end which seems to get the most use. The restrooms were open on a Monday morning. The grass is green and thick and quite pleasant to walk on. The park extends back to a more unused area.
The course starts right next to the restrooms. It has the old school fiberglass tee signs with the obiligatory course rules sign. I couldn't find a tee pad for # 1 so I guess you use the sidewalk here. The baskets are Innova Discatchers with the yellow bands and small numbers on them.
# 1 is a 200' par 3 to a basket set up on the hill. Trying to find # 2, I guessed to walk up the berm hill. I found a rubber mat but no sign.
From here the course gets kinda confusing. As you look out, you see a plethora of the fiberglass tee signs sticking up but few baskets. Eventually, I deducted that each basket is used twice but each basket only has one number on it. There are a variety of tee pads, no pads, etc.
It's too bad, really, because there is some nice elevation to throw from and some fun, challenging holes like # 13. It's 342', throwing downhill, through the power pole standards to a basket guarded by some trees below.
Apparently, # 9 basket was pulled after some kid was nailed with a disc. And because that basket is used twice, two holes are affected. Locals now play # 9 back to the # 1 basket.
Cons:
Navigation is confusing and frustrating.
Tee signs are hit or miss.
Tee pads are hit or miss.
Missing # 9 basket.
The fiberglass signs sticking up all over the place are really an eyesore in this park. This is a situation where I believe disc golf gets a bad rap from the community. This isn't the most beautiful park around but these signs don't help things any.
Other Thoughts:
Locals could really help the navigation process here by simply taking a sharpie and writing the second number on the basket with a sharpie. It would have helped me a lot if I had known that basket # 1 was also # 10.
With just a little work from the local club this course could become average. It's never going to be a destination course or anything but come on guys, give it a little help!
