Pros:
A stock disc golf course, but with excellent design.
-Amenities: Concrete tees, DISCatchers, paths between holes, some excellent signage, short driving range and practice basket.
-Flow: This is the kind of course that, while you can't see the tee from the previous basket, doesn't distract you with trying to find the next hole.
-Rough: Not too bad, which is remarkable for a Texas course of this style. There are some rougher spots, but generally it's manageable.
-Intermediate Difficulty: This is a perfectly executed rec or intermediate difficulty course. There's a good bit of challenge for those players, but the birdie opportunities are out there.
-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Plenty of shot shaping to be had, at a mid-level difficulty. Several technical ace runs, longer moderately open par-3s, and two wooded par-4s. You have to pick definite routes, but there are lots of birdie opportunities. Some holes will be very unlikely to birdie for most players, but those are the exception rather than the rule. In my opinion, this is the way intermediate courses should be done, not just by making holes require longer drives. I should also note the fun top-of-the-world shot on (16).
Cons:
Pretty hard to rag on Searight for anything of much substance.
-Missing Signs: The biggest issue, shared also by Roy G. I truly don't understand why people feel the need to steal tee signs, but a lot of them are missing here.
-Blind Holes: Several times I had to guess where the pin was, even with the direction of a local guide. Not much to be done unfortunately, unless they installed super tall flags.
-Mono-Thematic: Searight is essentially the same thing throughout. That's not an issue, per se, but it does reduce notability rating of the course.
Other Thoughts:
Searight is the basic template of a good course. It's got a couple of par-4s, always solid lines, and the amenities and flow necessary to not engender ill will. This is like most of those 2.5 courses that populate every city, but minus the boringest holes. Houck did a great job creating an intermediate-level course that fills an otherwise-missing difficulty level south of town.
