Artful

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 2, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Tucked in some woods with surprising elevation, the art course is extremely short, but not the gimme-fest you may be expecting by seeing the distances.

Concrete tees, a tee sign with distance, and red DD Veteran baskets nine times over. Each hole also features an art piece by a local artist. None of them are really incorporated into the hole, although they could be hit on 2, 4, and 9. My favorite is Iron Leaf on hole 6 - the only disc golf related piece. Mulching of the wooded fairways (3-9) was excellent.

You'd think with an average of 118ft per hole that this would be a cakewalk. This is not the case. Hole 6 goes uphill about 8ft and Hole 9 goes down about 15ft, with the fairway comprised of two shelves, the basket being on the lower one. 3 and 5 are milder in their elevation change, 8 is a toss over a rise in the ground, and 7 - while the shortest hole on the course - has the right line guarded so that your approach must come from the left or through the dead straight gap, but go too hard on the rhfh line and you'll end up in the rough to the left, and too soft and you'll skip right into the junk over there. I didn't know a 90ft hole could have risk/reward elements but here we are.

Hole 4 is the most difficult hole on the course by far. The right gap is smaller, but once you're through it's open, the left gap is wider, but has three more trees to contend with after the initial gap. An appropriate difficulty spike.

Cons:

Holes 1 and 2 are beginner holes. Which is fine. But not even close to the level of the rest of the round. Bit of a disappointment, but it's good they're at the beginning instead of the end.

The rough to the right of 3 and 4 is very rough. Seems a little cleaning would go a long way to cater to the beginners. The exit from hole 9 was also a bit overgrown.

Other Thoughts:

I was thoroughly surprised by the quality and care put into this course, even if they did make it far shorter than originally planned. I've played holes longer than this entire course so I can't feasibly rate it over a 2.0, but it's very solid for its size.

This is a fantastic little addition to the already good SMP course. Well worth tacking on if you're already playing the big course. Beginners can have an enjoyable wooded experience, and for the more experienced player the ace runs are tempting, but so are the low scores.
