Zero-Footprint Course

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

An unremarkable addition of baskets to a budget golf course.

South Gate Golf Course is a small, city-run golf course of holes under 150 yards. Added just beyond each green is a heavy DD portable basket, creating a 9-hole course of straight holes between 200'-450'.

Even though this is far from the most pristine golf course I've played on, it is still well kept by disc golf standards. There is also a near-zero percent chance of losing discs as the property is flat, with no rough, no water, and a fence surrounding.

I can't say much about the gameplay, but it is all reasonable with clear fairways. The length slowly stretches out from 200'ish to over 400' by the end. A couple of nice chances for rollers towards the end. Additionally, if playing the golf greens as OB, there's a decent challenge in dialing the distance to avoid extra strokes. A couple of baskets are on hills as well, most notably hole 6 which plays quite treacherous with the green just 8 feet on the left of the basket and a good 15' slope immediately to the right.

Cons:

A plot of land with small potential was used in the most basic way possible.

First of all, a flat plot of land with only a few trees isn't the most promising terrain for this sport. Even a perfect design on this property would be sub-par.

In terms of shot shaping…we have no shot shaping. Baskets are all straight ahead. As noted above the bunkers and greens add an element of difficulty but you could easily play this with one driver.

The baskets are not set up by default. If you want the course ready when you arrive, you'll need to call ahead on the day you're playing so the ground's crew can roll baskets out. (And no, you can't call a day ahead - I tried that and the baskets were put away when I arrived.)

The golf tees are too small for anything but a short x-step. Further, they get waterlogged with rain which is uncomfortable and causes grip issues. Some of the baskets are starting to rust and get crooked.

Hours are limited. They seem to change fairly frequently, so I don't want to put them down here, but you'll be behooved to call ahead and confirm if the course is available for discs.

If I remember correctly, the fee was $10, which is not a good deal for plain old straight holes.

Other Thoughts:

This course is unremarkable as a golf course, and even more unremarkable as a frolf course. There is very little to challenge an experienced player here, and virtually no equipment. Add a high fee and the requirement to call ahead, and this is very low in the rankings. All in all, I'd consider it a Passable course as it is entirely playable, but it is more fit for local practice than anything else.
