Pros:
-24 good discatchers and 3 practice baskets
-great signs on tall posts that are easy to see from a distance
-signs clearly mark pin position and also have bag hooks
-broom holder attached to each post, many brooms now missing
-concrete tees are large but slick
-large course area in a very large park
-a bunch of other park amenities: soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, tennis, bathrooms, a lake, tons of parking
-very easy to play as a traveling player, easy navigation once you find the start of the course (west side of park)
Cons:
-mostly wide open shots on most holes, there are a number of scattered trees but they usually don't force lines
-mostly the same distances, in the 300'-375' range, with a few slightly shorter or longer holes... even with multiple pin positions
-the listed distances looked very questionable, some longer and some shorter
-the pads are plenty long but really slick (and not just from the sandy soil); i preferred the grass
-the course feels repetitive; mostly open with one tree to beat in the fairway or to avoid near the green
Other Thoughts:
Sunset Park has been servicing disc golfers for a long time. In some ways, you can tell but it has held up pretty well. I think its best feature is how easy is to play for the traveling player looking for a disc fix in Vegas. Navigation is simple once you find hole 1. If you're taking a cab or uber, tell them to take the West entrance on Eastern Ave. The course starts next to the first parking lot on the left.
The signs are great. Descriptive pictures showing multiple pin positions with distances are posted on tall posts that are easy to see from a distance. Below the signs are stickers on the post with screws showing the current pin location. The posts also have a cross bar that functions as bag hooks. Finally, there are loops attached that serve as broom holders. Many of the brooms are missing now but it's a cool touch.
The tees are concrete and plenty large but really slick and sometimes uneven near the edges. I preferred using the grass next to the tee. The discatchers are in good condition and easy to spot from the tee.
There are 14 holes on one side of the park and then across the park road are the other 10 holes. The front side is more open, has similar distances, and feels very repetitive. There are a few trees to miss but they don't really force you to throw any particular shots. The exceptions there were my favorites on the front: 3, 12-14. The back 10 has a bit more trees and a little more variety in distance. I liked the cool tree on 23's green and the low ceilings on 16, 17, 22. There's an elevated basket on hole 24, on an extra tall pole.
The course is easy to navigate, easy to play, easy to find your discs, and easy to cut your round short if you're itching to get back to the craps table. Super convenient but the experience is pretty vanilla. Contrary to what the course page says, the park lights do not illuminate the course for night play. That said, I did see some locals setting up for some glow action.
This is not a destination at all but it's easy to grab a round here just to say you did. I wish I'd had more time to check out some other courses around town to see if Vegas has anything better to offer but Sunset Park is close to the strip and right next to the airport. Next time I'll be checking out the Wildhorse property.
