Pros:
- concrete tees
- good quality baskets in decent repair
- some garbage cans and benches throughout course
- mostly a dedicated disc golf space with good variety and distance
- one major water hazard, some decent elevation change, and a variety of shots
- good use of next tee signs for 6, 10, 12, 18
- landscape fabric and minimal mulch around baskets to keep them dry
- navigation is fairly straightforward
- really nice natural area with rabbits, birds, frogs, etc.
Cons:
- technically on Toyota Manufacturing property, but no indication the public isn't allowed, and no access control
- concrete tees are very small
- tee signs only have hole, par and distance and leave a bit to be desired
- next tee sign needs to be put in for 7
- lots of safety hazards with nature trail
- no practice basket, limited amenities
- rough is a bit long, and is really bad on 16-18 (prairie plants)
Other Thoughts:
I couldn't believe it when my father in law, who doesn't play disc golf, mentioned there was a course a few miles from our hotel and turned out to be right! This course was not yet on DGCR so I headed over to play and document it. Overall, it was a fun round. If you are a Toyota employee, this is a great addition to their family park. While some areas of the plant are gated access, this is wide open and Toyota touts their nature park as being a good part of the community so there's no indication you aren't welcome to play.
The biggest con here are the safety hazards. While it's mostly a dedicated disc golf area, many holes cross or otherwise interfere with the nature path - including 5, 6, 7, 10, 13, 15, and 17 at a minimum. Admittedly, I didn't see a single person on this path, but I was also there at 6 AM on a Monday morning, so it could be more of an issue at other times of day.
This course has some decent elevation change and lots of varied shots, with many being partially wooded but some of the front 9 being more open. The rough isn't mowed as short as some courses but it wasn't an issue until the end where you risk losing your disc in the tall prairie plants - watch out for ticks.
A few more garbage cans and benches might have been nice, and if you're going to the effort of putting in 18 concrete tees, I so wish you'd just make them a bit bigger than this course did. The tee signs also would be much better with some color maps, but overall the course is still playable and fun with some decent challenge.
One of the signature holes is Hole 7, where you have to throw down a narrow channel between the pond on your right and the Interstate off to the left. It's a high risk shot that challenges you throw placement well.
With respect to finding the course, once you take Family Circle to a dead end in the parking lot, you need to go to the far end of the parking lot past the shelter and memorial and the first tee is on your right. The sign by the beginning of the nature trail is not the start of the course; this is near 18's basket. Also, for hole 7, you have to follow the nature trail past the basket for 6 and take a left when you reach the pond, crossing over the bridge to get to the tee for 7.
This course was a bit muddy in places but overall was fairly well maintained. I decided after looking at some of my other ratings this course just barely warranted a 3. It's not amazing, but it's worth making the trip if you're in the area. I would rate the challenge as moderate; it's ok for beginners but probably better for intermediate players and up.
