A Taste of Good and Bad

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Around the sides and back of a small winery is a course with a mixture of wildly difficult holes to inordinately easy ones. Good news is they all come with concrete tees, tee signs, and nice red/blue Veteran baskets.

The transition from woods to open happens multiple times and is the highlight of the round. Hole 4 has a small gap to an open uphill, 9 is a long downhill to some tight woods in front of the pin, 10 is open off the tee, then darts right in the trees, 13 is a tunnel that doglegs right, into the open, and up a hill with the basket perched 20ft from a pond. And 18 is a short, tight tunnel with a tree right in the middle of the gap.

Difficult greens throughout, whether it be set next to the water (7 and 13), elevated (1 and 12), on difficult slopes (6 and 17), or very near to OB (2 and 3), all to keep you on your toes getting onto the green.

Cool elements all throughout. Hole 1's pin is set on a wine barrel, as is hole 12's island pin. Hole 6's green is set on some steps built into the hillside, and the vineyard to toss over on 17. The uphill to the pin of 13 is quite epic, and the island green adds some extra difficulty on 12.

Maintenance was superb. Fairways mowed, rough wasn't all that rough, mulch all over, bridges over the creek on 2 and 4. And they even bring goats out to chew on the nastier hillsides.

Cons:

A disappointing amount of wide open filler holes, 1, 5, and 15. 12 could be argued to be one, but I like the island. Also if you get into the vineyard rows on 16 or 17 you may have a heck of a time getting to your disc.

Hole 14 plays over an actual marsh. The dogleg is very harsh, and there's no warning that it's a marsh on the hole until you see the small mulch path through it Speaking of doglegs...

Of Holes 10-14, all of them except 12 practically require a rhfh line to get to the green. 10 is extremely tightly wooded, 11 is a short tunnel with the basket to the right at the end, and 13 and 14 are dogleg rights. Are there any dogleg lefts to be found here? Well...

Hole 8. What the heck is Hole 8. The sign is not indicative of what's happening. It's a dogleg left but the sign makes it seem straight. I went right of the shooting gallery berm thinking the basket is "behind" it from the tee. No, it's all the way over both berms to the left of what the sign shows. And it's not a great design as the c-shaped berm is covered in things that will bat your disc down into the unmown junk.

Other Thoughts:

Check in is easy, follow signs to the tasting room, pay your 5 bucks at the desk, then head back out to hole 1. I didn't sample the winery's wares, but I've been told it's good so that's an option after your round.

I really like the ideas behind the course, and there are many good holes around, but the lows are incredibly low. Maintenance and the good holes make it worth the 5 bucks for a local looking for a new challenge, but it's nothing to get all that way off the highway for.
