[Recommend] Need to fill a gap between wraith and fd3

Only distance driver in my bag right now is a pretty new pro wraith that I really like. In calm conditions I can make it go pretty straight for about 375 feet but I just can't trust it in headwind. That's when I have to use my c-fd3. It's pretty beat and has become a little straighter but it still never turns over no matter what. I like it but the problem is I can only throw it about 300 feet. I keep finding myself in situations where the fd3 is too short and the wraith is too unreliable.

I have been thinking about getting a star/champ wraith but since my pro wraith is still pretty new I'm wondering if star/champ will be different enough. Another option is a discmania dd. It seems to be the more overstable wraith. I like the pro plastic so would p-line dd be overstable enough or does it beat too much? Or is there some better option than dd or new wraith?

Grab a new star wraith. There isn't a huge gap between the two, but star will be more overstable for the wraith when compared to pro.

The newer run of star wraiths are great! The ones with more dome are more overstable. Should handle the headwind just fine!

One thing in general: when throwing into headwinds, the disc 'thinks' it is flying faster than it really is. So you can disc down a little bit and still get the Wraith distance into the headwind.

So yes, a Star or Champion Wraith might do ya, but I also recommend looking at the Marshall Street Flight Guide to see what is available between the FD3 and the Wraith. There are a ton of possibilities, including the Orc, the Starfire (the Pro Starfire is the SL, so be aware of that), the PD, the PDx, and the Avenger.

How much headwind are you talking? I'm comfortable throwing a Star Wraith in up to a 15 mph headwind. Above that I'd recommend a PDX if you want the same speed class. Other people prescribe to the philosophy of bumping up disc speed into a headwind rather than just stability, so you could instead go the Destroyer route, or Defender, or Enforcer, or PD2. Max distance into a headwind is a tricky proposition though, since the wind is pushing your disc backwards (bad for distance) but also creating lift (good for distance) and making the discs behave less stable. If you want to counteract each of those effects, then getting a discs that's a little faster, flatter, and more overstable is the way to go.

Back in the day, I always carried a Star Teerex to bookend my Wraith cycle. It would still be a good option.

Yeah give a Star Wraith a shot, it should have more stability and it will be familiar in flight type and feel.

The Champ Thunderbird is another option for midway between those discs. It'll lean closer to the FD3 than Pro Wraith, it should have similar or nearly the same HSS as the FD3 but a bit more glide and maybe another 25' for you at that distance. I would think the distance will be closer to FD3 but less fade, than the Wraith's distance...so if you want to hit closer to 350' range at this time then go with the Star Wraith. I think that would give you more versatility with minimal discs.

I would recommend a PD or a DD. The CD3 might be another viable option. The recent swirly run of CD3's came out nice.

Discmania DD is out of production, so you'd be limited to what's still out there floating around. A Star Wraith would probably work, but there are some out there that aren't very overstable.

Opposed to just getting a Destroyer? It would likely penetrate headwinds a little better if distance is something you're looking for. And since a headwind makes your throw's relative speed faster, why not go with a notch faster disc when throwing into it?

I just don't see how a Thunderbird or PD or the like isn't going to also be short of a Wraith into a headwind, like your current beat FD3.

This sounds like PD territory to me. I don't think there are many wraiths (based on my sample size of ~12, mostly star) that won't at least pop up off its angle in a decent headwind.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up getting a 175 star destroyer. It seems to be exactly what I needed. In slight headwind it goes straight and far without turning over.
