I'd be really interested in getting in touch with this guy to talk about exactly how he builds them. I've researched them online, but tonepoles seem to be a really grassroots sorta thing without much spec standards. My main trouble is figuring out the best way to attach the pole to the post while keeping a good "gong".

#17 at high bridge?
Cut a circle about 2-3" out of a tire tread[needs to be at least 3/4" thick]. Drill a hole in it and put this between the metal tone and the pole, and bolt down but not tightly. This should allow any solid metal to ring nicely, as long as there is good space between the tone and pole.

Good loud tonepoles are a thing of beauty. The best ones I've seen were made by one of our local golfers "Chainsaw", and are affectionatly called "Chainsaw tones". They are so loud and clear, that I once hit an ace on one, and it was still vibrating and ringing slightly by the time I got up to it.
Is there anyway to post the audio from one on here?
I'm already using the sound of chains for my text sound on my phone, maybe I'll make the tonepole sound my email alert.
I'll have to go out to one of the courses around here that still has them, but I'll try to take a video when I get a chance.
